C# - Allow Implicit Narrowing Conversion In For Each With Option Strict On?
Dec 1, 2009
VB.Net just showing its true colors again? When I turn Option Strict On, I am still able to do implicit narrowing conversions in a for each loop.For example, this code actually compiles;
Private Sub foobar()
Dim foo() As foo = {New foo}
For Each bar As bar In foo[code].....
From my understanding of Option Strict, this should not work.See here "Restricts implicit data type conversions to only widening conversions".My code above is a narrowing conversion, and so should be illegal.It will fail at runtime with an InvalidCastException.
C# does the same thing. Below is another implicit narrowing conversion.
private void foobar()
{
foo[] foo={new foo()};[code]......

With Option Strict On, I am getting an error with the above code, which is part of a procedure to add a new record in an 2003 access database table named "Jobdata". The items in Combobox3 is populated by another table in the same database, which has a Status field and a Key field. What I'm trying to do is to insert in the Status field in Jobdata table the correspoding integer value in Key to which ever
status is selected from the combobox.

The two lines below that divide by 2 are causing the error.

I have a DataGridView that is bound to a list of objects called "BaseChange". The BaseChange objects are made up of 4 properties...
ChangeType
ChangeStatus
ChangeDescription
LastChangeDate
The datagridview has columns for all 4 values as well as a 5th (a checkbox column called "colIsSelected"). There is no problem binding the list to the grid and displaying the items. The problem is that the query that gets the selected items in the grid is giving me an implicit cast error when option strict is enabled.
This is the query...
Dim _changes As List(Of BaseChange)
_changes = (From _row As DataGridViewRow In dgvChanges.Rows() _
Where Convert.ToBoolean(_row.Cells(NAME_COLUMN_IS_SELECTED).Value) = True _
Select DirectCast(_row.DataBoundItem, BaseChange)).ToList()
...and it produces the correct results with option strict off. The implicit cast squiggle is on the "row As DataGridViewRow" code, and the full message is "Implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'System.Windows.Forms.DataGridViewRow'*".
If I exclude the "As DataGridViewRow" from the query, I get a late binding error on the _row.Cells and _row.DataBoundItem and this also fails option strict.I need this to work with Option Strict enabled, and in VB.

Just wondering what the preferred/practised data type conversion technique is?
For example I recently enabled option strict, which in turn found quite a few errors in relation to data types, vb.net prompted me to use CType, which is fine.
However, I have seen other functions for data type conversion, such as .tostring, CInt , Convert, integer.parse and also Ctype.
Why would you use Ctype over the others?
I know its a pretty primitive question , but why do so many conversion methods exist?

I decided to turn on "Option Strict" to see all my implicit conversions that were going on WOW there were alot.I am making changes when I discoverd the following problem:With Option Strict Off , everything works great
Option Strict Off
Dim glahh As Integer = (Me.subj_gla_txt.Text * 120%) / 100
Dim glah As Integer = (Me.subj_gla_txt.Text * 115%) / 100
Dim glal As Integer = (Me.subj_gla_txt.Text * 85%) / 100
[code]....
I get run time error can not convert string "" to Double at the last line That error I thought would indicate that Me.List2_glatxt.Text is empty? I dont see how it could be since that line in the code above as integer works?

I have to take over a project written in vb.net, which contains more than 400k lines of code written in option strict off mode. I want to build it under option strict on first before I do anything else -- which maybe converting it into C#. I found there's thousands of lines of code raises compilation error, mostly are about implicit type casts. Is there any tool would help to make it compile under option strict on mode if I don't want to correct every single line manually? Because it's really painful to add CStr/CInt invocation into every line of Code myself.

I really like the coding speed that vb.net provides, but I don't like the possibility to forget to declare variable types, return types of functions, etc. and that is why in each class I use[code]..
Is there a way to define those two options on the project/solution level?

I understand the error but am not sure how to fix it, how do I tell it which one I am using? On msdn it says to ignore this error turn Option Strict to Off, but it is already off. It's not showing up as an error in the error list at the bottom, just a red underline, but it is preventing me from continuing with .OrderBy() and anymore functions.

After running into much difficulty getting started on my little planner attachment, I found this C# program (calendar_src) floating around on the net...somewhere. So I have been working on trying to convert this from C# to VB, which I have been using an online converter. From what I know I have been going through and trying to edit the code after it has been converted to VB code as best as I can. But now I have limited the errors from over 50 to these:
Error1Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'DrawLine' can be called without a narrowing conversion:
'Public Sub DrawLine(pen As System.Drawing.Pen, x1 As Integer, y1 As Integer, x2 As Integer, y2 As Integer)': Argument matching parameter 'y1' narrows from 'Double' to 'Integer'.
[code].....
Not only this, the VB main Form1 isn't showing the "DayView1" control that the C# one is. When I first created the VB app, I didn't know how to make 2 projects in 1, so it's probably wrong altogether...but I tried. The only reasons I am wanting to go off of someone else's control is because it only lacks 1 feature that I want, and that's having a full month view, not just limited to 1-3-5-7 day views.

I have a little problem here. I am getting an error which they are jumping on this statement: a.Proxy = New WebProxy(Address.Text, Ports.Text). I have removed the equal to replace with the Address.Text and Ports.Text, I have tried to included And statement and the '&' in that statement, but I keep get the messagebox. The ip I am connecting are working well.
Here it is the
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Try
Dim a As HttpWebRequest = DirectCast(HttpWebRequest.Create("http://whatismyip.com/automation/n09230945.asp"), HttpWebRequest)
[code]....
Error: Overload resolution failed because no accessible 'New' can be called without a narrowing conversion: 'Public Sub New(Address As String, BypassOnLocal As Boolean)': Argument matching parameter 'BypassOnLocal' narrows from 'String' to 'Boolean'. 'Public Sub New(Host As String, Port As Integer)': Argument matching parameter 'Port' narrows from 'String' to 'Integer'.
I shouldn't have the messagebox displaying on my screen while I am connect to the ip. I have tried with the dim statement to included the textbox strings, but it doesn't help. how I could included the strings of the textbox in the a.Proxy = New WebProxy statement?

1. I have read that keeping Option strict on and Option infer off is good practice and will insure your code is tight and properly written. I would like input regarding this, pro's and con's from those who are in the know.
2. Having said that, I have set Option strict on and Option infer off in an existing program I wrote (that was working perfectly mind you) with them off and on respectively. I went through and cleaned up all the errors on the 'need AS' and casting of variables, but one is leaving me a bit put out.[code]
I have also read where using My.Computer.System.Directory.GetFiles() instead of System.IO.Directory.GetFiles() is probably not a good thing, but when I change to this I get no error, but also no dataI am thinking I should stay with the strict on and infer off but am really slogging through getting this code correct.Running Win7 on Dual Quad Core XEON Intel Extreme with 8Gb RAM.
