So far, I made a form with 4 text boxes: Server name, user name, password, and a combo-box to select a database.Everything was pretty easy until the database selection code. Microsoft's wizard is very efficient, there's no wait time when the database combo box is being filled.[code]That code gets the databases just fine, but obviously if an exception happens the whole screen locks up and it might take a while to recover depending on what the database error is. My question is, can I make mine just as cool/efficient as Microsoft's?
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to make a little game using VB .NET 2008 Express Edition.The game is comparable to the Everybody Votes channel on the Nintendo Wii (if anyone has ever seen it). You can submit questions to a online database. Then, if the question is accepted, users can vote on it and other accepted questions. The questions are on a timer and when it hits a certain point (after a couple of days or so), the questions can no longer be voted on and the results are displayed. Since the details of the users account, the questions and the results would be in a database online, the program would also track some fun little aspects of their voting habits and stuff.
Onto my question though, how difficult would it be to pull something like this off? Especially for someone with no experience using an online database with VB .NET? I'm not foreign to the basics of VB .NET by any means, I've taken several courses with it in college and worked with offline Access databases, but taking it online is something completely new to me.

View 2 RepliesI would like to know the basics of roguelike development in Basic, Visual Basic to be more specific. As stated in the title, I have Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition (fully paid). I do know about variables, if statements, basic math operators (Such as addition and powers), advanced math operators (such as PI and Sqrt), nested if statements, functions, subs, and all of the other basic stuff about Visual Basic. I am most effective with console applications, rather than windows form applications. My favorite roguelike is ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery), which, in my opinion, is much better than nethack. I would like to make a game similar to ADOM, but I don't even know how to make the player move around the screen and collide with walls. I am also most effective with Video Tutorials, rather than written tutorials, just cause I'm not a big reader. I have seen most of thenewboston's video tutorials on Visual Basic more than once, and I have all of the basic stuff nailed down in my brain. If anyone at all can help me, or even team up with me in my VB.Net project ATOR (Ancient Temple of Redhold), it would make me so happy I would burst out in tears of joy! Btw, I have created a bunch of unfinished text-based games before in the game engine ADRIFT 5, so I do know the basics of game development.

View 1 RepliesMicrosoft Access 2007 A Students.mdb database file Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. I was informed that one can connect to Access files with ease from the Express Edition and most of the tutorials on the internet also show this however I am encountering a problem.
I open Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition Start a new project, with a form, and then click on the Data window, and add new data sources from the Data menu.
I click on database. The problem starts with the data connection. I click New Connection Change the Data Source from Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 to Microsoft Access Database File and instead of then leading back to the other window (as happens on the tutorials for me to browse for the mdb file). Another window pops up asking me to Add a Connection.
It has the data source listed as Access and asks for a Connection String under the misc section. I type in

When I click on Ok I get this error: Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0.
The Test connection button works and says connection success whether the Connection String field is empty or not but when I click OK it still gives me the same error. So I can't leave it blank either
So basically I can't connect to the Access database since I can't change the connection type and it won't just let me browse and add the file anyway.
I have a program that I need to import a csv file into sql database/tables.I am using Visual Basic 2008 express and sql server. When complete I have to distribute this to several users where they will have csv files in the same format but with unique data.It has been several years since I have done any programming and then it was vb6.I have quickly realized that my vb6 books are going to do me no good. I have spent an entire day watching tutorial and reading forums to no use.
The csv file is full of junk, where some of the records are 92 fields and some are 122. The fields have data that may have dozens of characters before and/or after the data that I need. On the good side I was able to pull the file into access and load it into two tables by using something along the lines of (where this = this, fill this table and the same for the second table.) So I have my 92 char records in one file and the 122 in another.Unfortunately though I can not use access to do this as many of the users do not have it. But by doing this I was able to work with the data in the file to get all of the fields set for name, length, type ect.So then I went into my vb project and created the database with two files.I set the fields up according to the information I got from the access tables. So I know that these two tables are a perfect fit for the data in this file.
What I need to be able to do is have the user browse through the program to find the csv file they will be using. If they have followed my directions, they should have placed it in the same folder as they program I will send them.I then need the program to take that file and import the data into my sql database/tables.I have come to the conclusion, given the condition of this file, that rather than try and clean it up before using it, it will make more sense to just get it loaded into the two tables.Then have my forms ect go and get the information that they need from the tables. Then after we are done using the records save them to a clean tables.
I am not able to add records in an Access 2007 database using VB 2010 Express Edition. I have read other posts and followed them but still I am not sucessful. I have the connection to the access database as MS Access Database, therefore it has the OLEDB connection (not the Jet 4.0). I am using the project instance in binding the text boxes to the fieldnames in the Access database. Did I miss something? I am also using Windows Vista Ultimate.

I want to create a table (called "Customers") in a Microsoft Access database and then insert/delete records into the table and update the table. The table shall have 3 columns:
ID
Customer Name
Customer Address
I know i need to make the "ID" column as an autonumber and a primary key, as i need to insert and delete records and update the table. I am using the Visual basic 2008 Express edition and quite familar with the OledBcommand.

The Add connection dialog box proposes to enter a database *file name* but I cannot select a database *server* and a database *name*.
Perhaps, is it a restriction because it is a free version ?
Within Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, I can select a database *server* and a database *name* !
