.net - Constant Values Required In Variable Declartion?
Jun 27, 2012
We are using a custom API in our project which provide an attribute for class fields/members which lets the interface to present a popup of some range values like "On/OFF" and pass the corresponding values of the choice to our code. The attribute requires a string array to know that values.We have many enumerations defined for these ranges,We are thinking to use Enum.GetValues() kind method to get a string array for this method.However, As we know the field declaration do not allow dynamic values in the declaration? so is there any other of doing same thing in efficient way.To clerify the problem i will write the examples below;
Current Working
<RangeLookUp("On:1","Off:2")> Public ASimpleRangeVariable As Integer
While I wanted to do like this or kind of
<RangeLookUp(SomeMethod())> Public ASimpleRangeVariable As Integer
Public Shared Function SomeMethod() as String()
'use Enum to get all the items as string values forexample Enum.GetValues & enu,.GetValues [code]....
Where SomeMethod suppose to return string array to be passed in the RangeLookup constructor.Which means if we change enumeration then we don't have to update the declaration.i know there are better ways to do it but due to some custom API, the ground is limited.

I need to read a named range into an array. Then if the value in the 1st position matches a static value, read the value in the second position. I've been looking into array's and this is what I think will work, however I get a compile error on the columns.count "constant expression required". Is it because in the DIM statement I'm attempting 2 things? This is a macro in Excel. The range name is Data1 and the string comparison is "AnyString". The second value will be an integer.
Sub macro1()
Dim rng As Range
Dim x As Integer
Dim y As Integer
rng = Range(Data1)

If I write the following inside my class,
<DefaultValue(Guid.Empty)> _
Public Property KeyValue() As Guid
I get an error on Guid.Empty "Constant expression is required."
What I'm trying to accomplish is to get rid of this line that shows up in the Designer file,
Me.TestUserControl1.KeyValue = New System.Guid("00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000")
I can avoid running the property's Set code with some conditionals on the Value sent when the form instances. I was just wondering if there's a way to deal with it similar to other data types.

Any way to assign a binary value to a vb variable? All of the obvious choices don't work. I've tried prefixing with &B, appending with b but nothing seems to work.For clarification, what I was looking for (which does not appear to be possible) was how to assign a literal binary number to a variable, in a similar manner in which you can assign a hex or octal number. I was just looking for a more visually engaging way to assign values to a flag enum.
Dim num as Integer = &H100ABC 'Hex'
Dim num2 as Integer = &O123765 'Octal'
Dim myFantasy as Integer = &B1000 'What I would like to be able to do'
Dim myReality as Integer = 2 ^ 3 'What I ended up doing'

I'm making a call to my DLL file (prototyping 30+ functions), and want to be able to switch between different versions of the DLL quickly while in development. Thus, i want to replace the literal string constant that follows the "Lib" key word, with a variable string constant. In case there's any confusion in my use of the jargon. I am currently able to do this:

I am developing an application which initially allows the user to browse and select a save location. The selected path is assigned to a public variable which is used with concatenation to crate folder for saving user input data. How can I change the path string to a constant so the user can run the program again without having to run setup routine unless they want to change the save location?

suppose I have variables named A1, A2, A3 ... B1, B2, B3 ... Z97, Z98, Z99. I have a certain operation I want to do using each one in turn. I CAN write a line of code for every single variable, but this will get pretty tedious. I'd prefer it if I can make a function that takes the letter and the number as arguments. So, if it gets the arguments "E" and "10" it will perform the operation on variable E10. What is the syntax for this? say a simple operation such as: result = E10 * 3 Is the syntax any different if I use constants instead of variables?

I need to know the IOCTL constants for the various strings (for example the value of the constant of IOCTL_ATA_PASS_THROUGH). Searching the net I found that those constants are defined in the header Ntddscsi.h but those constant are wrong. For example the constant value of IOCTL_ATA_PASS_THROUGH should be 4D02C while in the header file it is 40B
The question is: where can I find a list with ALL the right values?
I've found [URL].. where there are listed all the codes. the value in Ntddscsi.h is not the "final" value

I have the following constants declared:
Private Const LuxuryRate As Double = 74.84
Private Const FullSizeRate As Double = 48.44
Private Const MidSizeRate As Double = 44.91
Private Const CompactRate As Double = 30.46
And a combobox that lists each option. How can I set an if statement that uses these values if the option is chosen from the combobox? This is going to be part of a calculation performed when the button is pressed.

When developing ASP.NET websites (using VB.NET web forms) - a lot of my time is spend writing CSS files and they always seem to get messy (code duplication) and very long.
All I want to achieve is to be able to manipulate the CSS using VB.NET code in the following ways:
Use an integer variable to store my "golden" number 7 and use that for width, padding, margin etc where needed
Use string variables to store my "golden" hex color codes e.g. "#44C5F2" and use them for color, background-color, border-color etc. where needed Use an integer variable to set the height of an element and have four child elements each with height: mynum / 4
I just want to use basic VB.net number and string manipulation in order to create a CSS file on the fly.
I understand that the end product - the CSS file shouldn't change much - it should at most change on a daily basis otherwise caching couldn't be used.[code]...

When building a class library which contains many classes, all classes uses a lot of common constants and functions, what is the best to do:
1- Declare these constants and functions as public in a module.
2- In each class declare constants and functions used by individual class as private.
The first choice is good for easy and fast implementation, but re-using a class in a different project will require importing the module to the other project.The second choice require a lot of copy/paste for code snippet but a class can be re-used in different project easily.

I'm trying to teach myself to use SendMessage to manipulate other windows and have been reading as much as possible on the net to understand how to do this. I've come upon a problem though that I have been unable to find an answer for on the net. Currently I'm attempting to read text from another window. I am under the impression that I use FindWindowEx to dig into a target window's handle and find the controls in the form, although I still haven't been able to do it successfully. I read somewhere that I use Spy++ to find the names of the classes I am searching for with FindWindowEx, and that once I have the handle of the specific control containing the text I use SendMessage to send it a WM_GETTEXT message. The problem I'm having is that for the lParam MSDN says that SendMessage needs a "Buffer", and I'm not sure how to use one of those. I tried using the type Buffer, but that didn't seem to work. Is buffer a euphamism for a certain variable type? I tried using IntPtr as well but the returned IntPtr was always IntPtr.Zero...
So basically my questions are:
1. How exactly can I use FindWindowEx to locate a control's handle? I'm having trouble getting it to work, but I'm probably just not understanding how it functions.
2. What is the variable type for the "buffer" required in lParam of the WM_GETTEXT SendMessage?

Let's say I have 50 cars and I created 6 attributes for each of the 50 cars (therefore 300 total variables and values for those 300 variables). These attributes are created and valued based upon the following structure:
Car1Name = "Dark Red Car"
Car1Color = "Dark Red"
Car1DoorCount = 4
Car1Cost = 10000
Car1Appeal = 10
Car1BoughtStatus = False
Car2Name = "Bright Red Car"
Car2Color = "Bright Red"
Car2DoorCount = 4
Car2Cost = 11000
Car2Appeal = 8
Car2BoughtStatus = True
and 48 others of similar structure/syntax
How do I take a a module with these variables and values and populate them into a listview within a form such as Form1 and ListView1 without continuously going into listview's UI and manually entering the data? The goal is to show the USER a list of 50 cars, their color, door count, cost, appeal, and purchase status.

My application sends information from Form1 to Form2 by means of a global variable on Form1 whose value is read by Form2.
This variable is basically used to tell Form2 what it has to do because it's value will change depending on different conditions.
All form2 is meant to do is load data from a database into DataSets which will "ported" to Form1 (the main form) for consumption. I use a Form for this rather than a class because there's a lot of data that will be loaded each time it's visible and I wanted[code]...

I am trying to work with classes and variables and don't seem to understand some behavior that is going on.
first off the class
Public Class csSession
Public ID As Integer
Public Name As String
End Class
Usage and behavior (example code)
Dim S1 as new csSession
Dim S2 as new csSession
S1.ID = 1
S1.Name = "1st Session"
S2 = S1
S2.ID = 99
When I assign S2 = S1 all the values of S1 passes to S2 but also there is a "link" or bond between the two variables now. If I change the values of S2 this automatically changes the values of S1!! Why does this happen and how can I prevent it? I just want to pass the variables values contained S1 to S2.

I have declared a class in VB.NET using VS2K5 with some shared variables and made that class a dllI made use of that dll in another project and tried to make use of those variables. Even though I can able to make use of them, Im unable to view the values of those variables like the values of normal variables when Im debugging. Is there any way that I can watch the values of those shared variables during debugging.
