.net - Launching A Child Process And The Windows 7 Taskbar
Sep 30, 2010
We have an application that self-updates using a Laucher.exe process which copies down new App.exe and DLLs from a server then runs them in a separate process. This was all working very well until the arrival of the Windows 7 taskbar... Problem is in Windows 7, if the user pins the Launcher.exe to the task bar (by right-clicking the shortcut to Launcher.exe) then this happens... When you start the program the "pinned" taskbar icon momentarily gets focus while the launcher is running but then a totally separate new icon appears when App.exe is running. If the user then decides to right click the icon from the running App.exe and pin that to the taskbar, they bypass the application update part of the process.

I am working on a small VB application that listens for commands sent from an Android app.
One of the functions is to extract an archive. I am familiar with how to listen for the unrar process to finish, so I can display a progressdialog on the phone while the extraction is happening, and clear it as soon as it's done.
BUT ... if there is an error/alert from WinRAR, WaitForExit() never gets called because WinRAR is still sitting there open until I click "OK" on the MsgBox.
For Example ... if you try to extract a file that is not actually an archive... an alert will pop up saying "No Archives Found", and basically everything is halted on the VB app and the Android app, and the Android app just sits on a progressdialog saying "extracting..." until you manually hit "OK" on the computer.
As you can imagine, this is a problem if the whole point of your app is to NOT have to go over to the computer.
So... I am wondering if there is something similar to WaitForExit() that will wait for an error and allow me to close out the alert and let the process end.
Here's my Sub for the UnRar command:
Private Sub UnRar(ByVal WorkingDirectory As String, ByVal filepath As String)
Dim objRegKey As RegistryKey
objRegKey = Registry.ClassesRoot.OpenSubKey("WinRARShellOpenCommand")
[Code]......

I would like to launch a command line exe I created. For now it's a test program that writes Hello World to the console. I can launch it, but the shell window it displays it in only stays for a split second.
I know I can add a line to my console mode program (readline). But I would like to control it from the process launch. I will be using console mode programs that I did not write myself, and many of them don't stall the output. I can't find the right properties and methods to control the default shell behavior!

i am trying to open an external executable file during runtime using a process component and the process.start() method. I've been testing out my code with various executable files on my C: drive....some work and some do not work. I've been able to successfully open Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, and Notepad; however, when I try opening various other executables the following exception gets thrown:
A first chance exception of type 'System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception' occurred in System.dll
I cannot figure out why some programs open just fine while others cause the above exception to be thrown.

I have a procedure (parent process) that starts several processes (child processes). The child processes calculate several array variables. How can I pass those arrays to the parent process? At the moment, the child processes write the arrays to a streambuilder and the parent process reads the stream. Is there a better way to do it? Is it possible to have the child processes write to RAM memory and have the parent process read from there? It is like declaring a global variable in the parent process and give the child processes access to it.

I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

My VB.NET Windows form application includes a BackgroundWorker that calls a command-line batch file in a Systems.Diagnostics.Process object, which in turn calls a Java command. If the user cancels, the program kills the cmd.exe properly via process.kill() (it is ok in this case), but the java.exe child process remains, which makes the program hang. I've researched how to kill a parent and child process. It seems there are complicated ways to do this via WMI or Win32 API. But I'm hoping there is a simpler VB.NET way.

I have a program that has a main window, and a progression of other windows that all open from each other. I only want the main window to show in the taskbar, and I want to be able to minimize at any window, and have every window minimize to a single item in the taskbarThe problem is: when I set each form's 'SHOWINTASKBAR' to True, every form shows in the taskbar instead of just one. If I set the 'SHOWINTASKBAR' property to False, they don't minimize to the taskbar.

I am making a Kiosk system and would like to recreate the Windows Taskbar in VB.NET, specifically the window management features of the taskbar: displaying open windows, switching between windows, and highlighting which window has focus. if the taskbar had the same positioning properties as the Windows Taskbar, in that even when other windows had focus the taskbar would still have focus and would not taking focus away from windows on the screen, and maximized windows would not maximize over the taskbar.

I'm writing an application that I want to keep status text always on the taskbar. Some programs like Windows Media player create a toolbar that can be added to the taskbar. Is there a way to do this in VB.NET, and if so how ... ?
I can create a notifyicon, and although it can be used to display notifications I need the text information to always be displayed... I could have used different icons to show a change in status in the notifytray but I really need text to display the status.

I saw an application for cashier system in a certain store. I noticed that while the application was running, the window form of their application occupies the entire screen and the windows taskbar seems to be hidden. I'm just curious how did they hide the windows taskbar? Do they hide the taskbar in a manual settings on their computer before the application was launched? If not, how did they make their application capable of hiding the taskbar? Please put a detail code if applicable. I just want to know how to hide the taskbar when you launch the application and put it back when you exits the application as well.
