I have following instance of System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection:
Dim UserSelection As New System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection
UserSelection.Add("D_Color1", "Black")
UserSelection.Add("D_Color2", "Green")
UserSelection.Add("D_Color3", "Purple")
I need to save this instance to hard disk and then load it back from hard disk as an instance. How do I do that?

What's really the point in using the former?It's hard to use linq if I used the former. I have to convert that to an array first which is difficult because there is no (asarray) function.I think I would change all of my code that's using System.

I have a program for collecting data of people. Now i also have a picture of these people... what is the best thing to do? what is the fastest? the safest?
1. Converting a picture to a bytearray an then insert it into a sql -table (with al ready 5 columns).
2. making an new table on the sql database with just two columns (id-ref, picture-column)
3. or saving a file on to the hard drive? (if nescessary saving the url into the database?)

I was thinking to make an app to save images [or download images] to local hard disk. But to keep it easy, I want this app to create a small picturebox on form to show the thumbnail of downloaded image. Lets say a 5 pictureboxes has to be added with the thumbnails to show the recent downloads. A user can save the location where he wants to save the files on hard disk. A listbox or a dropdown menu will help in categorizing the images, like image1 in friends section, image2 in family section, image3 in others, etc... When the program restarts all the latest 5 thumbnails has to be loaded in pictureboxes and the directory that was chosen. Finally, a button that shows the downloaded images into original image file size one by one or a slide show. Is it possible to make such program?

I have a single instance VB 2010 application I know how to communicate with the next instances run through the StartupNextInstance application event. The usual way of working with this is parsing command line arguments of the new instance and continue execution of the old instance. What I would like to do is replace the running instance with the new one. Is there any way to do this other than disabling the single instance property ?

A while ago, I wrote a web-based guestbook application that wrote it's own database.
My code was very amateurish, but, as it was my very first publication, I was very happy with it. Only about a month after I'd published it did I realize I'd made a huge mistake in the code.
I've only ever connected to a specific named instance of SQL Server, and it occurred to me that, if the SQL Server instance has a different name than the one I specified, it wouldn't work.
So, since my users will probably not know what the name of the instance of SQL Server that's running is, I thought adding a field where the user can specify it would help if they do, but what if they don't? My answer was to get the local instance, regardless of name.
I tried Data Source=.local;, Data Source=.; and other variants, but nothing worked.

I have written a class to model an object in vb.net, using vs2008 and framework 2.0. I am serializing the class to an XML file for persistent storage. I do this with a method in the class like this:

I now want to do a similar thing but reading the class from file to the current instance, like this:

Dim reader = New Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer(GetType(MyNamespace.MyClass))
Dim file = New System.IO.StreamReader(FullPath)

However, I cannot assign anything to "Me". I've tried creating a temporary object to hold the file contents then copying each property and field over to the current instance.I iterated over the properties (using Reflection), but this soon gets messy, dealing with ReadOnly collection properties, for example. If I just copy each property manually I will have to remember to modify the procedure whenever I add a property in the future, so that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I know that I could just use a separate function outside the class but many built-in .NET classes can instantiate themselves from file e.g. Dim bmp As New Bitmap(filename As String) and this seems very intuitive to me. how to load a class into the current instance in the Sub New procedure?

I'm working on a calculator for an online text based game, Cybernations. This game revolves around building your nation.I currently am using a class called Nation, this contains all the values for the nation such as infrastructure and land lvls. I want a way to save a nation as a file so that I can load it later and keep playing with it. I also want to be able to save multiple nations.
I'll need specifics on how to declare this in the program and where. I currently have a nation declared in my main form called ThisNation that is global. I think I can define ThisNation in the loading form as the selected file, but I'm not sure on how to do that. The actual file loading needs to be called from a button click in the loading form, then the program switches to the main form where you can actually do stuff.Where should I put the loading process, and how should I define ThisNation as the file?

I have set the "Make single instance application" check box.And when my application version is 1.0.0.0 for example, it is OK and won't load multiple instances.But when I create a new version, for example 1.0.0.1, then I can run 2 instances of my application, when the 1st instance is 1.0.0.0 and the second instance is 1.0.0.1.What should I do to prevent this?

A nice quick one I was wondering if anyone know the answer two (was shown a rough way to do this in vb6 but that was a long time ago)I have an application running in the system tray which I want as single instance (and currently have set as single instance)
However if someone double click on on the Desktop Icon or Startmenu Icon etc I want the main menu form to appear (frmMainMenu). Is it possible so that if opening the app when its already running triggers an invent in first instance rather than creating a new instance?
