I am currently working on a project of "interpreting" C# into VB. The project involves adding images to a database, retrieving images from the database and presenting them in thumbnails. Right now I have the following Public Class with the Variable that needs to be assigned:

I am using this example I found to learn how to load class files and access variables through them. This is in a file called Class1.vb in the App_Code folder (this is not an app project):

How could I access the vartest variable without using a session, since if this is accessed by multiple functions at the same time the variable can be overwritten I assume. Is it possible to go the other way, where a variable is sent to a class file?
I have created a public shared subroutine in a class file in asp.net 2 (vb.net) web site app_folder.The subroutine retrives some values from a sql database via an sql query and assigns the datareader field values to several variables The problem is I can't seem to assign the variables from the subroutine to the variables and textbox controls in the asp.net page I am calling the subroutine from. The textbox text value just appear blank.By the way, if I response.write the variables in the subroutine they appear populated by the sql data reader.
View 9 RepliesI have extended an Entity Framework 4 entity class with a calculated property in a partial class. This member is not available on the client to which the entities are exposed via WCF RIA Services.when using C# appears to be changing the extension of the partial class file from .cs to .shared.cs. I tried this with my VB.Net solution (.vb to .shared.vb) and got a long list of errors. I believe what happened is that the partial class lost its association with the entity on the client - it inherited from object rather than EntityObject.
My best guess is that this is related to the way that VB.Net handles namespaces.Each project has a 'Root Namespace' which is prepended to anything that is defined within a code file. C# has a 'Default Namespace'which is the namespace into which new types are placed by default - via a namespace statement within the file.The partial class is probably having the client namespace prepended to it which puts it into a different namespace than the entity with which it is associated on the server.Is there any means of extending an entity in such a way that those extensions are available on the client via WCF RIA Services and VB.Net?

For the sake of this thread, what I would like to do is get the name of the label that was clicked which in the code below is already done, convert it to string (not sure if this needs to be done), this is also done in the code below. Next I want to compare the labelnamestring to all the variables in the public class to find out which one it is equal to and then disply that variable which should be my rs232 string in the message box. I have also added "Cmd" to the variable names above so I also need to work out how to add the text "Cmd" to the string to properly compare.

I'm not sure of the syntax necessary to access a class's attributes inside of a Dictionary declaration.

So if I want to test it and use MsgBox() how do I trickle down to pull, say, name in food > cheese1 > info > attributes2 > name?
EDIT:I just realized that Array in info needs to be a Dictionary for an associative array, so please ignore that error and just assume it is a Dictionary for this question's sake.

This seems really wrong, as the value seems to be held in the partial class after the first run. So if I have two users accessing the class the public shared dim is changed for both users! There must be a better way to do this. I have looked everywhere and I'm more confused now than when I started off..How can I make QuoteStatus in the partial class unique to every user and access it from my code.
I can access a module from code behind but not from the aspx page in inline VB code <% ... %>.

i have a function that i have in my data access class now i want to access it then declare and assign parameters and then insert data into database.
I was thinking about writing some VB 2005 code that would be able to open an excel file and keep it open while I do things in separate functions/subs basically just check boxes, so each check box is its own sub but HOW do I do that with out opening and closing the excel file for every check box sub, since every time I make a check box the sub comes up as private?
View 9 RepliesWhen you create a new asp.net page in VS 2008 and choose code behind, it also creates the typical aspx.vb or aspx.cs file to go along with it.
At the top of those files, VS names the 'Partial Class' name the file structure and/or name of the aspx file.
The question: Is there a best practice for this? Can I just use a single class name for all the pages in my application or perhaps a single directory instead of having to give each one a unique name?
I would like to create a partial class for my form. I have a lot of events, and it gets messy, so I would like to break up sections into their own files. The problem: When I create a partial class of my form, say:

1. How do I create a partial class for a form?
2. If I cant do that, how can I break up all the events in my form into different files?

I am reading a book (ASP.NET 3.5 Enterprise Application Development with Visual Studio 2008: Problem Design Solution, WROX)The source code is written in C#, but I am a VB guy, so I am giving it a try. Somewhere in the 2nd chapter, there is a Linq to Sql file used that is generated by drag&dropping the DB tables from the Database Explorer. Because some tables have the same type of fields, there is an interface generated called IENTBaseEntity. The writer says its a good practice to implement this interface in another partial class (not the designer.vb file!). The reason for this is that when the LinqToSql file is modified (and regenerated) the changes wont be lost.
In C# this solution is easy to do (i think), but in VB.Net I get an error, because the concerning properties in the LinqToSql file do not append the 'Implement IENTBaseEntity.Property' line. When I press [Enter] after the interface implementation line, VS generates other properties like this

I have to make a VB project for one of my college Co-Sci classes. However, I am having issues doing what I think is logically possible. Part of our project entails creating a user defined class, then create a form that then instantiates an instance of the object type. After that we are to list the item in a listbox. That is all well and good and works fine.
What I need help with is looping through each object in the listbox, getting some data from the object, then moving to the next.
I have been trying something similar to c++. For example, an object contained in a c++ array can be accessed like this:
array[index].someObjectMethod().
How would someone do something similar to that for objects contained in a VB listbox? I imagine it starts something like this:
myListBox.Items(index).
I have a textbox which is bounded to the typed dataset. If the user in the textbox &hit keydown, it should allow only numeric values with 2 decimal points and also it should not allow more than one "."(dot). I found many but all thats are using textbox event

But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)
I've created a 30 point wizard. Every step gathers between 1 and 3 variables. I've created a module and publicly declared the variables there. At the end of the wizard, one master form opens, gets all the variables, and displays them on one form. At this point calculations are run too which populates more variables. This works fine for one instance of the process.
the user may want to be running two instances of the wizard at once. Obviously, if the previous wizard is part complete and they start a new one, the variables are going to get crossed or replaced by the new wizard.Is there a way for the variables to be declared publicly but used in multiple instances?

When using the backgroundworker, I know that the DoWork event is not suppposed to support cross thread operations for controls. I have a public integer variable declared on a different form that I need to test in the DoWork event.The backgroundworker seems to not be able to check what the variable is, as the test never enters inside the if/end if check. If I copy the code exactly to a different sub (IE, not a background worker, a normal sub) and call that sub instead of starting a background worker, the if/end if always gets entered.I'm confused as to why it won't raise a cross thread exception, but won't test the variable that makes the check true (as it does in the test sub).I added in a try/catch block and that doesn't catch any exception either. I tried a timer and started the new sub with that timer, but that still completely locked up the app...
