I have a client who is causing my software application to "hang" whenever he plugs in a thumb-drive and copies files. My software is using none of these files... can anyone hazard a guess at what's going on?
View 14 RepliesI routinely make backups of my VB 2008 projects, using Windows Explorer, copying the entire project file to a thumb drive. For some obscure reason, a couple of days ago it suddenly stopped working. Specifically, the project is fine on the harddrive, can be copied to a backup area of the harddrive, but when I copy it to the thumb drive, I get an error message indicating the file can't be found. This is not a new process--I have been backing up projects for several years and never encountered anything like this.
When I click on the project folder, it shows the typical files. When I doubleclick on the .sln file, nothing happens (meaning the file does not open as it does on the harddrive). Solution Explorer shows a .vb file. When I click that, I get the "Can't find the file" error. Other projects on the thumb drive open with no problem, but I am hesitant to overwrite those with "new" versions that may not work.
We are trying to rename a volume label on a thumb drive using a visual basic program, but the operation doesn't work. We are not getting any error messages, it just doesn't work. The user account being used does not have any special privileges. I suspect the user may have to be an administrator, but that is not an option. Any ideas on how to accomplish without elevating the users privileges?
View 2 RepliesI have to create a program to manage a large number of USB Thumbdrives. In short, the drives will contain corporate images used by technicians to prep machines in the field. I do not have to create the images as they are already provided. Since I have to create 50 plus of these at one time, I am looking at writing a program to automate the process. As it stands now, formatting, partitioning, and copying the image to each key individually is, as you can understand, not efficient time wise. I have already purchased two industrial quality 7 port powered hubs.
The plan is to be able to: Fill all 14 slots in the hubs with USB ThumbdrivesUse the program to select the drives to prepareHave the program format and partition the drives (bootable)Copy the contents of the image folder provided to the USB keys. The idea is to do the above by filling all the slots and hitting one button, then walking away to do other work. When done, the drives would be ejected, and the next set of 14 installed.
I have already created the User Interface. It consists of: 5 buttons (Scan For Drives, Format Drives, Build Drives, Build And Format Drives, Exit).One "Select Source" entry field to select the source of the Image Files.One Checked Entry List. This is where all available drives will be listed, and the one's desired to be checked.
Now, it has been 20 years since I did any coding, and all of that was done in languages that are pretty much dead today (Turbo Pascal, Clarion Professional Developer and R:Base), so to say I'm behind the curve is an understatement. While I was never a real fan of Basic, I have some experience with it. But today's VB.Net ain't your daddy's basic, and there's no way I have time to learn C or C++. I have the Express version of Visual Studio 2010, which should be fine for this project.
I am using Background Worker control to cancel internal operation.I am populating data in to datagridview and written this entire code in Do_Work event of Background Worker .But when my number of rows are greater thansize of datagridview that time my application is hang.Number of row always greater than 50.

My application get hang after i download log from hardware unit.Basically hardware protocol is custom design(no modbus).there are huge number of records(minimum 1000) which i have to show in grid at the time of download process takes place i add new rows into grid to show record function works on but after function execution over application gets hang. No process is pending after that function.

I developed a Visual Basic Program in my laptop. I can run the program form my C Drive and works perfectly.
Then I put the program in a Share Drive and:
1. If I run the program from my laptop but in the Share Drive I get this Error[url]...
2. If I run the program from my desktop and the Share Disk it is works perfectly.
3. If I run the program from a different user desktop and the Share Disk I get this error[url]...
I suppose it is a Security Issue or something like that but I am not totally sure and I do not know how to fixe it.
So I need everything from declarations of variable to the actual code.When you answer it in high level that destroys the chance of others answering the same.I would like to get the drive letter of where my application is started in VB2008.

I'm trying to learn Crystal Reports (VS 2005, VB) and per this question I was trying to drive the report with my own data objects instead of through a DB connection.
I found this tutorial and it looked promising as an answer to my question, but after diving in it only seems to apply to web development.
Am I out of luck in trying to power a Crystal Report with .NET objects in a standalone application?

I have a program that allows the user to enter a drive letter into a text box. The program then takes the letter and find the physical drive number (i.e. deviceharddisk3..). It then stripes out everything and leaves me with the number 3.
In VB6 I used mDrive.bas from vbAccelerator.com and it worked perfectly. I have been all over the internet and back and cannot find a solution written in VB.NET.
I want to make a tool that will assign a USB pen drive a drive letter, I am using WMI to acknowledge the device being plugged in, I can pull the deviceID, name, etc now I just need to work out how to assign the device to a drive and I just cant figure it out
View 4 RepliesThe drive is connected via USB and the problem I'm having is that, periodically, while my code is executing, the usb drive seems to disconnect and reconnect. (Nothing to do with the program, but the drive itself).I want to find a way to prevent these temporary drive reconnects from interrupting my code. IE, i want to insure that whatever read or write that is requested is actually executed even in the case of a temporary drive interruption.

For example if I input C then the result needs to be \Device\HardDrive1\... Some call it NT Device Name; I think. I have the code for VB6 from vbAccelerator, which works perfectly, but it does not work in VB.NET. My question is there a simple way of pulling the drive info that contains the drive letter and the physical device number. I have searched the internet and found nothing for VB.NET. I would post code but I have nothing for .NET.

View 14 RepliesI have a program I am converting from VB6 to VB.NET and I am stuck at the very last piece of code. I need to determine what physical device number is associated with the drive letter.
The program takes the drive letter from a text box and goes and finds the device number (i.e. deviceharddrive3...) and strips out everything leaving me with the devicer number; in this case the number 3. I have searched the internet to and fro and found nothing in VB.NET.
My program in VB6 uses a .bas module from vbaccelerator.com called mDrive.bas and works great. I can't figure out how to convert it over to VB.NET.
I have a VB.NET GUI (VS2005) that calls into a VB6 DLL to query MSAccess 2003 databases using DAO 3.6. Yes, I know this is not an ideal scenario, but that's the way the current application is set up. Component Checker shows MDAC 2.8 SP1 is installed. This application usually runs for a long time on our customer's Windows XP SP3 system with no issues. Occasionally (read: after 11 minutes or 11 hours or days), we experience a hang in the application, such that it needs to be ended with task manager and restarted. According to crash dumps and one lucky capture within the debugger, all threads are waiting on objects/critical sections within ntdll.dll. My specific thread gets stuck there and comes from MSJet40.dll. In the crash dumps, most threads are stuck in NTWaitForSingleObject, RtlEnterCriticalSection, etc.
I've been troubleshooting this intermittent issue for months and am convinced this is a bug in MSJet40.dll. The version of the DLL is 4.0.9511 and I see there is a hotfix for 4.0.9514 on XP SP3 outlined in: =[URL] I would like to get this hotfix to see if it fixes the issue and speak with MS if it doesn't. I have crash dumps and procmon traces of these events. This sounds very similar to the dreaded "Jet Bug" that shows up on a Google, supposedly fixed for Windows 2003 Server SP1, but I see no mention of it on Windows XP SP3.
