Buffer/Array - Safe Application That Contains 3 Threads - Data Acquisition And Decoding - Data Graphing - FFT And Filtering

Aug 26, 2009

I am trying to write a thread safe application that contains 3 threads : -

1 - Data acquisition and decoding
2- Data graphing
3 - FFT and filtering

Thread 1 is collecting bytes from the serial port and converting them int integers (so taking two bytes) after is has captured 64 Bytes and converted into 32 integers, it then needs to pass the array to the graphing thread.

The graphing thread then plots the data and waits for more data.

Thread 3 also waits until thread one has collected 2023 integers and takes these and performs some FFT calculations (which take time).

My question is how do i share the arrays between the three threads without deadlocking the program? as the serial thread will be flying around reasonable fast (1000 bytes per second) so it will synclock onto the shared buffers for most of the time.

Originally i was going to use two synchronised queues, so when thread 1 has collected 32 bytes it queues the data into the graph queue, and once it has collected 2023 it queues the data into the FFT queue.

Then thread 2 and 3 can simple dequeue the data.

However using queues has the overhead of casting the data in and out, and as i know the data type i was planning on using two arrays :-

Dim GraphArray() as ushort
Dim FFTArray() as ushort

Then Thread 1 adds data to each thread, and thread 2 and 3 simple wait until the correct amount of data is available before removing the data. my question is there an array type that allows me to remove x amount of data from an array?

Because i cannot do this easily with the ararys defined as above (GraphArray, FFTArray), as i was planning on making them 1mByte and allowing thread 1 to fill them Knowing they should never overflow and then let thread 2 and 3 remove x amout of bytes at a time unless there is a better way of doing it

Get Multiple Threads To Store Data In One Array?

Sep 4, 2009

I have a application that use threadpool, and each thread stores data in the same textfile. I now want to have each thread store the data in the same array instead and use a timer to store all current data in the array into the text file after every couple of minutes.

So what I want to do is:

1. All threads store data in one array that they all have access to

2. After every couple of minutes the data in the array is stored into the text file.

I know number 2 can be done with a timer, but is the first one possible? If so how do I accomplish this task?

VB Express USB Data Acquisition?

Nov 26, 2007

I had a copy of Visual Studio Professional on my old computer years ago, but decided against getting it on my new PC. Instead, I downloaded Microsoft's free offerings in the Express editions (C++, VB being the ones I am somewhat familiar with and interested in continuing).

I recently thought of an application that I would like to create, but am concerned that Visual Basic Express won't be able to handle it. I don't quite know what it means when 'they' say that Express can't work with remote data, so I will describe my application and let you tell me if I need to go ahead and get a pay-for version of VB.

a) USB temperature probe (like the one you used in high school chemistry, if you're young enough...) in fish tank, plugged into PC.

b) VB Express app intercepts the data stream and reads the temperature. (I can figure out numerical conversions if necessary using the Logger software which comes with the probe, and excel, if my VB application is showing numbers that follow a pattern with the temperature)

c) Application compares the temperature to the user-defined hi/low settings.

d) Application communicates wirelessly with an X10 Lamp Module, turning on or off the outlet, which is the same as turning on or off the 7.5 watt 'dumb' heater (no on/off switch; you plug it in to turn it on).I've seen ActiveX controls and code examples online that tell you how to code for X10 in visual basic)

C# :: FIFO / QUEUE With Buffer And Thread-safe?

I'm receiving tons of statistics data that I need to insert into the db.I would like to implement some kind of Queue or FIFO class that keeps all the dataand when it reaches to a specific count (buffer), it will send that data to the SQL through bulk insert. This should be thread-safe.

VS 2008 - Safe Cancellation Of Unknown Threads

Jul 7, 2011

I have got my multi threaded application running which is a Windows Service Project.

Basically when the service starts it starts a thread listening on a port for connections. The reason I started this on a new thread was so I could easily control it and not lock up that main worked thread.

Now on that thread when a client connects it dynamically assigns them another port number that is not currently in use and starts a new thread listening on that port and waits for the client to connect to do the actual data crunching.

So basically I have my main project thread, a Main listening thread then the possiblity of 0 to 100 more threads for each connected client.

Now this project should always be running but in the event it needs to be shut down (or server rebooted etc) I want to be able to shutdown the threads safely.

I can down my main listening thread safely but my trouble is all those other possible threads. What I would like is if the service is called to stop I want any of those other possible running threads which would have an active connection to the client to send a simple command like 'STOP' then close the connection gracefully (MyConnection.Close) and end itself.

The only solution I can think of which I don't really want to do is have a global varible (StopThreads as Boolean) and after each command in the thread check that boolean and if its set to true jump to some code to do what I want and end the thread but there must be an easier way? Or is this the best way?

Streaming To A Buffer And Then Using Data?

Jul 31, 2010

I am using VB.net sockets to send a music file from one instance to another. It currently saves the file, but I do not want to be caught up in file-sharing, so I want to "save" it to a buffer, and when it gets to a particular percentage transferred, I want another thread to play the music file, deleting it from the buffer as it plays. I have the code to send it over the network, but I need to know how to keep it in a buffer and not save it as a file.

Does Queuing Threads Impact Non-thread Safe Objects In Same Class

May 7, 2009

If I spawn a thread with ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem and that thread does not reference the object that is not thread safe, would it compromise that non-thread safe object? By not thread safe object, I mean a third party interface to a programmable logic controller that has no ability to open simultaneous connections or concurrency support.I suppose I just wanted to be sure that by queuing threads in the same class as my reference to that object, I wouldn't somehow be compromising its thread safeness in a way I didn't realize.

DirectSound Reading Data From Capture Buffer?

Jul 13, 2011

where I'm going wrong with my circular DirectSound Capture buffer here? If I just capture sound into a big non-circular buffer it works fine, but with a 1 second (44100 bytes) buffer and a 100ms timer to poll the read position it goes haywire. No error messages, just long blocks of zeros with short bursts of valid data. calculation of the number of bytes to read and/or the read position.

Here is the code. gBuffer is defined elsewhere as a big byte array. In this example I am just trying to copy the captured sound data from the small temporary byte array (tempBuffer) into the big gBuffer byte array. Obviously this must be done so that every byte is read and copied into the byte array with no gaps or duplication of values. Timer1 is set to 100mS:

Dim McaptureBuffer As CaptureBuffer
Dim MiLastReadPos As Integer
Dim MiBufferOffset As Integer

Graphing And Rotating An Array Using VB10?

Apr 16, 2012

I had an assignment that I had done, which has been turned in, I was able to get it to graph, but it when it reaches the right side of the screen it drops off, when it is is adjusted using the velleman controls it jumps back up, hw would I fix this.

Here are the instructon for the assignment:

Write a program tat rads two analog inputs from a velleman board and plots the values on a rotating graph. The number of value plotted horizontally should be specified in a text box. Label the graphs vertical values in at least three places. Print the current voltage reading for each input in it's own lable. The graph should auto scale to fille the graph vertically and horizontally.

The two things that I couldn't get to work is the graph drops off the chart and I was unable to place the vertical values in three places.

Here is my code:

Filtering Data More Than Once?

Dec 2, 2009

I created a query on a Access database, which I would like to show with the datagridview. So, I created a new table adapter with my query, which creates as well the datatable tbl1. Then, the wizard created the datagridview for me, showing the correct data. Now, I would like to filter these rows: I already read it is possible to do it by simply clicking "Add query...", but I would like to do it in a different way. I have some comboboxes, and I would like to use the strings inside them to filter my table tbl1. Is it possible to apply those queries one after the other on my datatable tbl1? I am able to filter only once with:

Me.tbl1TableAdapter.FillBySomething(Me.DataSet.tbl1, params...)

But, if I wanted to filter the result again?

DataGridView Filtering - CSV Style Data?

Mar 6, 2012

DataGridView filtering. I have this data bound to a combobox:
Product Index
Prod1 1,2
Prod2 7,8,9
Prod3 10,11

Actual Table structure is:
Index Product
1 prod1
2 prod1
7 prod2
8 prod2
9 prod2
10 prod2
11 prod3
(Product is the Display Member, Index is the ValueMember)

On the combobox's SelectedIndexChanged event, I'm filtering the DataGridView:
DGVCustomers.DataSource.DefaultView.RowFilter = "indexes like '%" + MyDropDown.SelectedValue + "%'"
If MyDropDown.SelectedValue is "1,2" then any record without either number will not be shown , in addition "7,8,9" will only show customers with that string... etc etc. How can I filter the DGV correctly with the CSV style data? (It's not my data unfortunately!)

Error In Binding Data After Filtering

Jan 12, 2009

I am trying to make a small application and I have a problem in binding data after filtering them.I use VB 2005 and SQL 2005. The data are shown in datagridview and I bind the selected row to the text boxes of the form. eg.[code]Later on I search the data for some records and at the same time I remove the databinding. When I try to bind them again it does not work because the index is from the whole data and not the filter data.I have fixed the problem in another situation where I had autonumberin as a primary key and I used this as an index. In this case I use platesno as an index and it's not working.

VS 2008 Filtering Data Before Output

May 2, 2011

I am pulling different information from the same file at two different times: 1) The first time, I pull information that is inserted into a combobox. I need to use the combobox as a filter for when I pull the information a second time. 2) I pull different information from the same file, and it is outputted into a datagridview table. I already have a filter in place when the information is pulled the second time, and I was wondering if I could add to that filter or if I have to make another filter? The filter (or filters) will be used to filter the information in the datagridview before it is outputted in a chart.

This is the code for binding the combobox to the information
