Calling Javascript Function From Within Desktop Application?
Jun 24, 2009
I'm trying to do something which i am not sure is possible, im hoping someone will be able to prove me wrong.I have a desktop application written in VB .net which needs to post to google analytics, the interface they provide is javascript based. At the moment my application opens an internet browser, goes to a specified URL which in turn executes the javascript contained within, this is cludgey and memory gobling!
Is there any way of importing a javascript file and calling a javascript function without opening a third party browser? would preferably not want to use the browser control either.Is there a way of instantiating for instance a javascript engine and passing it the commands?

I have a VB.NET function which looks like this:
<WebMethod()> _
Public Shared Function AuthenticateUser(ByVal UserInfo As String, ByVal Password As String) As Boolean
Dim UserName As String
[code]....
It calls the function, but won't return a value. When walking through the code, my VB function does fire (it will return true so long as the correct password is typed in), but the javascript 'authenticated' value remains 'undefined'. It's like you can't return values from VB functions to javascript.
I also tried
if PageMethods.AuthenticateUser("UserName", "Password")
{
//Stuff
}
But still no luck.

I need to find a way to call a vb.net function in my aspx page from javascript. I have a Jquery function that makes the .drop class .droppable, and whenever I drop a .draggable onto a drop target, my Jquery code successfully fires a java alert statement. All in pure javascript. What I need to do is some heavy math!

Say I have a simple web app written in asp.net/vb.net. The web page has one button. When you click it, it does some junk in the code behind. What I would like to do, is when the page reloads, after the server has done its thing, to execute a JavaScript function.
Now the only stipulation is that it can only happen if the button was clicked. Not just on any page load. Is there a simple way to do this?

I have web page with four grid views. Each grid is hidden under a div tag. Whenever user clicks on div the data grid corresponding to the div is shown. I have binded data to the grid views at the page load only, since the data size is huge I cannot load the data binding at the page as the time taking to page load is huge. I was thinking a way that grid view gets data loaded only when user clicks on the corresponding div tag

Is it possible to call a function within an asp.net web application from outside that application e.g. with VB.net? If so it would be great to see a hello world type example.
For arguments sake lets say I have my function "helloworld" in a class file within web application: [URL]
My ultimate goal is to enable some reliable / robust scheduling of functions within asp.net. I have read multiple examples about using web services / custom services running on the server etc but I don't really get the implementation.

I have an application (app.exe) that has a VB Module in its source code (Module1). The module has a function called Function1. I need to call this function from another application. The module is not marked as public, so adding a reference to app.exe won't work. I'm trying to use reflection (Assembly.LoadFrom()) but unless I'm way off base, the module would have to be a class in order for me to get an instance of it.
Please nobody ask me "what have you tried?" I tried a million different things and let's just say "none of them work." So I'm looking for someone that has specific experience with doing exactly what I'm trying to do. If you don't have that experience, please move on to the next question and ignore mine.

I'm working on one of my applications and I'm trying to find a way to use the "Go To Desktop" function that goes directly to the desktop without minimizing any window (This can be achieved by clicking on the Win + D buttons or on the desktop icon in the quick launch toolbar), but how can I activate it using vb? I thought about sending keys but I guess there is more offical ways to do it.

I have the following click once link I'm trying to call from a window.open code in javascript.strURL = 'http://www.methodintegration.com/MethodIntegrationXora/MXConnect.application';window.open(strURL, 'NewWindow')In Firefox its fine, but in IE the popup appears and then disappears after a split second without any download starting. Is there some kind of security on IE to that is preventing the download? Are there any solutions or best practices for downloading click once applications from javascript?

I'm currently working with a client's VB.Net code, which was developed for them by a small development shop a few years ago and which they purchased and have been maintaining and uprgrading since. This client's primary developer is out on indefinite (likely permanent) medical leave and I'm now filling in until they bring in a full timer (as I'm a contractor here). My current task is to add some functionality to a the VB.Net code they purchased. I'm finding practices and techniques in the code that absolutely baffle me and can't make the code do what I want. I'm starting to wonder if it's me and was hoping to get some thoughts on the code I've encountered.
For example: Setting a variable to accept the result of a function by calling the function with many parameters, clearing the parameters in the function, setting them to some value, calling another function with those new values, then never using the values returned by the functions. I'll add a code snippet in the first comment since this is already getting long.

I have a function where I am performing a lot number of database operations inside a Sub. The operation when called directly like:ExecProcess()
takes about 11 seconds to run.However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute.Here's the threaded code:
Protected del As ProcessDelegate
Protected Delegate Sub ProcessDelegate()
del = New ProcessDelegate(AddressOf SELocal.ExecJob)
Dim cb As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.ExecJobComplete)
del.BeginInvoke(cb, del)
Anyone know what may cause a function to take longer inside a new thread, rather than calling directly?

Let's say 10 desktop shortcuts, all with different names/icons, point to and can start the same exe application from the same directory. Is there any means for the application to know the distinct name of the shortcut that was doubled_clicked. Also is there any means for a running application to know if it was started by command line, by a double_click on the exe, by a double_click on a shortcut that points to it, or by another process' call?

I have used the PInvoke Signature Toolkit to create VB.NET function definitions for three fairly simple C functions contained in an external DLL. The problem is that two of the parameters are structures so pointers need to be sent and one structure (fileview) is undefined.
OpenFileView(filename, &fileview_ptr)
ReadFileInfo(fileview_ptr, &fileinfo_ptr)
The structure of fileinfo is defined so I can create a structure definition in VB.NET and create an IntPtr to that structure with Marshall.AllocHGlobal. And then I can use Marshall.StructureToPtr to copy the data and do the inverse when the data is returned.
