The application sits on a virtual environment and when I remote in and run the application, it connects to the remote database. However, when I remote in with a service account and double click the same .exe, it tries to connect to the local host database and ignores the app.config. The code is the same, only the login name I use is different. The login I use is part of the local admin group. Any ideas?

Is there way when i give them software i can change server name on their machine.
i thought modify connect string of config file . But it seemed not yet.
<add name="QLBH2008ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=COXUYEN.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|mRIC.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
I was currently looking at on old application that I am maintianing and it uses a mixture of retrieving Application config settings from both the App.config and application config table in the DB.In the new software I am working (a port of the old application) I have a list of email addresses that are static and rarely change, what would be the best mechanism for retrieving these. Currently I am using resource strings so that using them is a simple My.Resources., but what are the benefits/drawbacks of storing the information either in the App.Config or a database table.
View 3 RepliesI know this topic has been addressed a million times but please help me out. I have read so many articles on HOW TO encrypt and decrypt the app.config file but I need to know WHEN and WHERE I should encrypt it.
The problem arose because we found an AppName.exe.config file on a users computer and the database username and password was clearly visible. I understand that the .config file gets created during the VB app install process and is used
by the application. I then learned about the aspnet_regiis.exe tool and ran it on the app.config file inside my VB project. I am guessing that was the wrong thing to do.
When I now install the app on user desktops, it gives an error stating failed to decrypt the connection string. Also, when one of my other developers attempts to open the project in his copy of visual studio on his computer, he receives an error when trying to access the setting portion of the project properties. We store all of our projects on a file server and any developer can access the projects via a mapped drive on their computer.
So how am I supposed to encrypt the .config file. If I can't encrypt the App.config file in the development environment, then I'm guessing I have to perform the encryption on the users PC during the install process? How do I do that? Or is that what I am supposed to do?
Just for reference, here is the aspnet_regiis command I ran.
aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "connectionStrings" S:ProjectsDevelopmentVB.netPTPUSourceCodePTPU -prov "DataProtectionConfigurationProvider"
One last thing, maybe it's my misunderstanding of the issue but if this problem has existed since .Net 2.0, why has an option not been built into the development studio to encrypt connection strings?. This would seem to be a very common issue, even their own dataset wizard creates connection strings that are clearly readable.
I'm working on a tool that allows the user to connect to his SQL database and edit some of the database values.First here's a screenshot of the GUI (you can see my problem as well):

I have a class library (Named ADI), that needs some configuration settings from the project using it (like connectionstring, filesystem locations etc).
I want to define these settings in my Windows Forms/Web Projects App.Config or Web.Config, like other settings.
Here is part of my app.config for my windows forms application:
<applicationSettings>
<PhotoImportRobot.My.MySettings>
<setting name="ADIImageRoot" serializeAs="String">

is there any tool to validate configuration file?
View 1 RepliesI have built a functionality where I want to back up the database - [Access]. Currently, its working but the user has to specify the file. I used a FileOpenDialog Box to get the file, saved it in a textbox and copied it to another directory. That works good. What I want now is the user doesnt have to know the lcoation of the Database. So, I just want to copy the Database File using the Configuration.Appsettings. He can specify the directory the file needs to be copied to. The Access DB is referenced as follows:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestCMS.My.MySettings.CMSConnectionString" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=|DataDirectory|CMS.mdb"
providerName="System.Data.OleDb" />
</connectionStrings>
Our main application has both a asp.net and winforms component. There is a class that is used by both sides and needs info from either the web.config or app.config files. The class itself does not know if it's on the client side or on the web server (at this point). We are getting errors when it's attempting read app.config when it's on the web side. Is there a way for the class to tell if it needs to read web.config or app.config?
View 1 RepliesI am using VB code behind in Visual Studio 2008 to process data but can't figure out SQLConnection problems. I copied and pasted the connectionstring for my database from the explorer properties window but when I paste it inside the parenthesis of SqlConnection() it gives me an error. Also if I name a variable " dim myconnect As New SqlConnection" in does not give me all of the methods or attributes that are associated with it. Is this a Express Edition limitation or do I need to make some specific declarations to get it to work. this is what I have so far
Dim
connectString As String
Dim myconnect As New SqlConnection()

myconnect. If I try to put open() at the end of this it says its not a member of SqlConnection. I have a dataset but no way to insert into the database

I am trying to connect to a database in VB 2008 express the book I am using is for an older model of VB. The book says to go to view and click on server explorer, and then a database wizard should open. VB 2008 express doesn't have a server explorer under the view section. I know what code I need to enter into to the two buttons I have I just do not know how to open the wizard.
