Change Case Of Specified Characters In A String?

Sep 27, 2011

I have all-one-case strings representing postal addresses stored in a database, but I want to capitalize US state abbreviations (e.g. " ca " to " CA ") when the abbreviation is separated from the rest of the string by a space on either side.The lousy way I could do it would be to have 50 statements like

If addressString.Contains(" al ") Then addressString.Replace(" al ", " AL ")
If addressString.Contains(" ak ") Then addressString.Replace(" ak ", " AK ")
...

Edit: That is a really lousy way! Here's what I did instead:

addressString = StrConv(addressString, VbStrConv.ProperCase)

'This needed to be done anyway, but it turns " ak " into " Ak ".

Static stateAbbrevs As New List(Of String)(New String() {" Ak ", " Al ", " Ar "...})
For Each a In stateAbbrevs
If addressString.Contains(a) Then

Find In List / Remove Item And Ignore Case Of Characters In String

May 20, 2012

I'm having issues with finding something in list, and removing the item, ignoring the case of characters in string.

The code goes:
Dim listItems As New List(Of String)
Dim pattern As String = "AbC"
Dim array() As String
array = {"ABC", "abc"}
listItems.AddRange(array)

Here I'd like to remove all items from listItems, that are abc, no matter what case single characters of item are, including mixed case items. So in this example, every items should be removed
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))

If I change pattern to match the case of item, then item #2 gets removed:
pattern = "abc"
listItems.Remove(listItems.Find(Function(r) r = pattern))
How can I find item in listItems, ignoring the case characters in pattern?

String.Format - Allowing User To Change Case?

Feb 25, 2009

Any way to change the case of a string using the String.Format command. For example, you can do this:
String.Format("{0,50}","My Info")
And it gives it a fixed width string output, I need to allow the user to change the case. All they can pass in is the format "{0,50}" so NO .net functionality, we wrap it up for them. In VB6 you could use a ">" "<" to change the case, surely M$ must have added a way to do this?

Error When Getting A Substring Of X Characters Out Of A Parent String Of Less Than X Characters?

Feb 23, 2011

Not sure if too many people know this, but the following line will cause an error:

GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_"

....if the length of GroupName is less than 3 characters. I always thought it would simply return whatever characters in GroupName, but no, it errors. I must be thinking of the old VB6 days.So, I now have to change the code to:

If (GroupName.Length > 2) Then
If (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then

Note that the two comparisons need to be on separate lines. If they are on the same line, such as:

If (GroupName.Length > 2) and (GroupName.Substring(0, 3) = "jt_") Then then the code will still fail as the length command is executed at the same time as the substring command- which will cause the error when the GroupName length is less than 3.Just thought that those of us not aware of this should be!

How To Change IF Statement To Select Case

Dec 17, 2011

I've got the following that has got multiple values of a particular variable and I don't want to stack up to a lot of IF ELSE statements to handle them, so I'd be grateful if some one could very kindly modify the code by using the SELECT CASE statement. Also, I'd like dgMarksEntry.Item(7, i).Value and dgMarksEntry.Item(8, i).Value to handle RANK and COUNT the number of items entered respectively. [Code]

String Search - Parse The String Of Characters One At A Time

May 5, 2012

I have written a program that uses an array of the english alphabet and Morse code. I also built a form with a input box for the alphabetic information and an output box with the Morse Code. What i am trying to do is basically type a word like "Hi" in the input box and produce the Morse Code equivalent in the Morse Code output box. [Code] This works but only one letter at a time. Do i need to Parse the string of characters one at a time, and then run it through a loop like i have created?

String.contain() Versus Select Case?

Feb 10, 2010

I have 8 sentences, such as:

"Hello and we Hope you enjoy our service<100>"
"Good Morning Mr something nice to see you <200>"
"Good Evening Welcome to this domain <300>" etc etc

(The actual requirement is long sentence about 10 or 15 word and 8 different sentences.) I want to check which on is the response from the xmlhttp, I am doing that by searching the response if it contain <100> or <200> or <300> and depends on that I want to display "Login Faild", "Login success", "Server Down" etc.. what I mean, I have a place for 4 words in my listview and i don't want to put the complete response that came from the server, my question is, how to do it? I had tried to use Select Case in this way, it did not worked.

Case MyResponse.Contain("<100>")
MyResult = "Login Failed"

.net - Case Insensitive String Compare In LINQ-to-SQL

May 8, 2009

I've read that it's unwise to use ToUpper and ToLower to perform case-insensitive string comparisons, but I see no alternative when it comes to LINQ-to-SQL. The ignoreCase and CompareOptions arguments of String.Compare are ignored by LINQ-to-SQL (if you're using a case-sensitive database, you get a case-sensitive comparison even if you ask for a case-insensitive comparison). Is ToLower or ToUpper the best option here? Is one better than the other? I thought I read somewhere that ToUpper was better, but I don't know if that applies here. (I'm doing a lot of code reviews and everyone is using ToLower.)
