Check If LINQ Entity Of Unknown Type Exists In Its Respective Table

Sep 23, 2010

I'm trying to check if a LINQ Entity exists in its table, but at design time I dont know what type that entity is. So I figure I'll just get the table, and try the Contains method on it. But I cant get the table in such a way that I can query it at design time.I've tried the GetTable method on the datacontext, but I dont know how to cast it to the appropriate type when using GetTable(Of). GetTable(Type) works, I just use Entity.GetType(), but then I don't know how to query the ITable thats returned. To try and cast the ITable to something useable, I created an interface(IWhatever) that could implement properties that are native to all of my entities I would encounter. Asp.net Mvc - For Each Loop LINQ Insert Giving Cannot Add An Entity That Already Exists?

Mar 11, 2010

I have the following code, that in my head should create a new row in a table:

Dim fin As Boolean
Dim db2 As New ChecklistModeldbmlDataContext
For Each a In bServers

If collection("fin" & a.ServerName) = "true, false" Or collection("fin" & a.ServerName) = "true,false" Then

[Code]...

It only ever adds one record in to the table and then errors with Cannot add an entity that already exists.

Now it should enter 4 rows into the table, but I can't work out why the above gives me that error.

I've also tried having the db2.SubmitChanges() outside of the for each and it just inserts the last row.

.net - In Linq To Entities - How To Do An Inner EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM - Type Of Query

Mar 6, 2011

I am trying to write a LINQ equivalent of

SELECT C1, C2, C3
FROM T1
WHERE T1.C4='xyz' AND
EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM T2
WHERE T1.C17 = T2.C24)
ORDER BY C3

I'm using EF CTP 5, so I have a DBContext variable named dbc, which includes DBSet objects T1s and T2s, based on POCOs T1 and T2.

In LINQ I write

DIM IND = From i In dbc.T1s
Where i.C4 = "xyz"
And (From t In dbc.T2s Where i.C17 = t.C24).Any
Select i.C1, i.C2, i.C3
Order By C3

Running the query I get the error message "Unable to create a constant value of type 'T2'. Only primitive types ('such as Int32, String, and Guid') are supported in this context." When I omit the inner expression (third line in the LINQ code), the query runs fine. I tried switching the orders of the inner comparison, to be t.C24 = i.C17, with no effect.

I have a tenant details form that has a field called TenantID, I also have a Lease table that also has a TenantID field, what I want to do is click the lease button, check to see if the lease already exists, if it does open the lease form to that record. If not then open the lease form to a New record so the user can enter all the information for that lease.

I am trying to use the below code but am having a little trouble understanding how it all works. What needs to be declared, what doesnt

Convert A Two-table Exists Query From SQL To Linq Using Dynamic Fields In The Subquery?

Jun 7, 2011

I'm trying to query old Access database tables and compare them with SQL Server tables. They often don't have primary keys, or they have extra fields that had some purpose in the nineties, etc., or the new tables have new fields, etc.I need to find records - based on a set of fields specified at runtime - that are in one table but not another. So, I do this kind of query all the time in SQL, when I'm comparing data in different tables:

dim fields_i_care_about as string = "field1, field2, field3"
'This kind of thing gets set by a caller, can be any number of fields, depends on the
'table
dim s as string= ""

[code]....

It tells me it can't convert a Boolean - Is there any way to do this without Linq expressions? They seem far more complex than what I'm trying to do here, and they take a lot of code, and also I can't seem to find examples of Expressions where we're comparing two fields in a subquery. Is there a simpler way? I know I could do the usual EXISTS query using JOIN or IN - in this case I don't need the query to be super fast or anything. And I don't need to use a DataTable or DataSet - I can put the data in some other kind of object.

Cast Value Type To Nullable Enumeration Type In Generic Object If All Types Are Unknown At Write-time?

Dec 14, 2011

I have a generic Class I'm using to hold information loaded from a database.I have a method which takes a DataRow as an argument, uses the object's known column name and extracts the data from the DataRow, such that:Dim loadData As T = CType(myDataRow("myColumnName"), T))works as my default assignment in most cases.Unfortunately, due to some horrifying design constraints, some of my columns may be null, and may also be taken from enumerations. This means that when <T> is Nullable(Of SomeEnumeration) the above code does not work because I can't cast 0 directly to SomeEnumeration.Zero.Is there some way to check whether <T> is Nullable(Of [Enum])? Or some way to write a method which allows Integers to be cast to Nullable(Of [Enum])?I feel like I'm forgetting something that would allow me to write one of the other of these, but my weak google-fu is turning up nothing.

EDIT: Okay, thanks to dasblinkenlight's answer below, I can detect when this circumstance is occurring, but what I need to do now is to take a type <T> which I know is Nullable(Of SomeClass), get a type reference to SomeClass and then create a new object of type Nullable(Of SomeClass) and assign that to LoadData. My problem was that I had a lot of difficulty in finding any function which would accept baseType as an actual Type.Parse accepted baseType as a parameter, I knew baseType was an [Enum] type because of dasblinkenlight's code, so I was, in this instance, able to code a solution. It's a solution which is very specific to my problem (i.e., T is Nullable(of SomeEnumeration)), but it's a solution nonetheless.

Sql - LINQ Or DataTable When Number Of Fields Unknown

Feb 25, 2010

I have a dynamic query which returns a DataTable. This DataTable will contain a varying number of columns depending on the selection used in the query. I want an efficient way of filtering the records in the DataTable.

For Example The DataTable contains columns : A, B, C and D

I need to query this data at serveral points in my program. At some point I may need records where A=10 and C>40. At another point I may need records where A<10 and D=90 etc.etc. The selects are dymanmic, I do not now what Columns or values are needed until the code is executing.

I could simply use a DataTable Filter and build the selection string dynamically. I have no problem with this. However I was wondering if using LINQ would be more applicable. I am completely new to LINQ and would like to use it but don't know its capabilities.

(At present I am using a DataTable but in future this may change to a collection of Objects)

WPF With Entity Framework Or Linq?

Feb 8, 2011

I have some basic expirience in Visual Basic and programming Windows Forms programs. I know now that forms programs are no longer updated by Microsoft and that WPF is the way to go. No to mention the slicker interface you can create. I've also noticed that passing SQL strings to a database is no longer the standard either. It's either Entity Framwork or Linq.

So I am going for a fresh approach. I need to develop a program that will access a sql database and be accessed by about 10 concurrent users within the office. What's the best approach in general? Linq or Entity Framework? Also, could you recommend a book or two for someone who is new to WPF and Entity Framework? I do have some programming expirience, just none with WPF or the new ways of ADO.net 4.

Copy An Object Of An Unknown Type?

Jul 29, 2010

Rather than giving the very specific case (which I did earlier), let me give a general example. Let's say that I have a function, called callingFunction. It has one parameter, called parameter. Parameter is of an unknown type. Let us then say that I wish to copy this parameter, and return it as a new object. For example, in pseudo code, something along the lines of...

[Code]...

EDIT: Additional Information The first time I posted this question, I received only one response - I felt that perhaps I made the question too specific. I guess I will explain more, I have an ASP page with 10 tables on it. I am trying, using the VB code behind, to come up with a single solution to add new rows to any table. When the user clicks a button, a generic "add row" function should be called.

The difficulty lies in the fact that I have no guarantee of the contents of any table. A new row will have the same contents as the row above it, but given that there are 10 tables, 1 row could contain any number of objects - text boxes, check boxes, etc. So I want to create a generic object, make it of the same type as the row above it, then add it to a new cell, then to a new row, then to the table.

C# - Entity Framework/LINQ To SQL Data Binding Use Reflection?

Apr 20, 2009

I'm taking a peek at both the Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL, and while I like the systems (and of course the LINQ integration) I'm a little skeptical on the data-binding aspect. I've taken query results and inspected them, and they don't appear to implement the standard .NET list-binding interfaces (IBindingList, and more importantly ITypedList), leading me to believe that binding them to a grid (or anything else) is going to use reflection to get/set my entity properties. This seems like a comparatively expensive operation, especially when all of the code is generated anyway and could implement the interfaces. Is reflection used to get/set the value of the properties?

Edit: I'm actually concentrating on whether or not ITypedList is implemented somewhere along the way, as that's what has the capability to provide an explicit mechanism for defining and interacting with properties without resorting to reflection. While I didn't have a LINQ to SQL project up,I did inspect a simple Entity Framework entity query result, and it did not appear to implement ITypedList.

Edit 2: After accepting Marc's answer, I thought it might be helpful for others if I posted some simple code I used to seamlessly implement his solution. I put the following in the static constructor for my class:

public static ContextName()
{
foreach(Type type in System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()[code]....

While this is for LINQ to SQL, I'm sure an equivalent version could be written for the Entity Framework. This will scan the assembly for any types with the Table attribute and add a custom provider for each of them.
