View 2 RepliesI'm trying to use the DHCP API (using the references on pinvoke.net) to retrieve a computer's MAC address when given the IP address but I can't get the code to work. I've run all the C# code on pinvoke.net through the C#-to-VB converter but I'm stuck now.
Here's what I have so far. The value of res is always 5 (should be 0). Thing is, I can't find any documentation on what the return codes mean

Basically, I want to display the IP address to the user, instead of walking them through how to do an "ipconfig". They then can put that IP address into another app, so the one app can talk to the other via UDP.
I am trying to make a simple port scanner to scan a rang of IP's so like 192.168.4.245 to 192.168.5.100. I am using Visual Basic.Net 2010 and am having trouble converting the IP from a String to a Long so that I can increment it and convert it back to a String. For some reason VB.Net 2010 doesn't include the winsock controller and therefore I am having problems finding a method that works similar to inet_addr() which makes conversion much easier. I found an example on one of the forms here

The problem is that I'm running on Windows Vista and the above code seems to want to return the IP V6 information and not the V4 information. How can I force it to return the V4 information?

I have a small embedded web server and to setup its network parameters I use a serial port, however this is giving me a lot of trouble due to USB to serial adapters (in some computers work in other doesn't).
However the other day I saw that Buffalo has a little program to find their NAS boxes (or network drives) when you don't know their IP address or got the wrong one so I assume they do it by looking for mac addresses.Is there any way of doing this with VB 2005 or higher? Basically I don't know the IP of the embedded server so I need to find it on a network, how do I find it?
a) I could do a general IP scan assuming it is on the same subnet than the host computer
b) if it has a different subnet... a general IP scan is not going to work, is it?

View 25 RepliesI am developing a windows application for my guys on helpdesk to use with our clients. It is going to be installed on the clients' pc's. One of it's purposes is to display all IP info of a computer. Such as the client's IP address, DNS IP address, DHCP IP address, and Default Gateway IP address, but I can only get it to give me the IP address of the host and no addresses of the DNS, DHCP, or Default Gateway. I know that I could run an ipconfig /all and pull the results into the application, but I would like to have it laid out more simply for it to be easier to read for the clients in case we are walking them through some troubleshooting over the phone and we need their IP information. I do not require and am not requesting any source code.
View 6 RepliesI am using VB2008 Express and am curious how to send a command via RS232 communications. The string that I need to send is 02h PON 03h. The start and end bits are 02h and 03h.
How can I convert 02h and 03h to its ascii form. In hyperterminal, I use the sequence {(hold)ALT 0 0 2} on the number pad to send the start bit.

which, through the Call Stack, I found is called by the main window's InitializeComponent() method.Everywhere I've looked has told me that the corresponding static constructor in VB is just:Shared Sub New()
but this method is never invoked. Am I creating my VB static constructor right? Is it likely something else that has nothing to do with my static constructor?
I am writing a code for a webapplication in vb.net. I am using a shared variable in the vb code.
Consider the static variable value is 3 for a user who hits the web application. Again when another user hits the same web application, whether the static variable will be 3 again or whether he will have a separate value for static variable for his session?
