Communications :: What Does <MTAThread> Actually Do
Jun 17, 2010
I see it often declared in front of main functions and after reading the MSDN comment on the matter, it's purpose still eludes me. As far as i can understand it has to do with setting the program into some form of multithreaded state. But what does that even mean? When should I use it, why should I use it, is it even currently relevant becouse i read somewhere that the default apartment state is MTA nowaday's What's it's purpose mister Anderson ...

I am using VB2008 Express and am curious how to send a command via RS232 communications. The string that I need to send is 02h PON 03h. The start and end bits are 02h and 03h.
How can I convert 02h and 03h to its ascii form. In hyperterminal, I use the sequence {(hold)ALT 0 0 2} on the number pad to send the start bit.
I am using this code currently without the start and end bits

I got a piece of code that I have to use as a class. It gets added to the project every time, the accessed from the code of the forms.
It is for ethernet communication to an industrial radio.
So right now it's a just a class called MK
Question:
Is it possible to compile a class into a DLL which then can be just referenced to each application?

The &H30D? i know its a hexadecimal value and may represent a message but i cant find anything about why someone would need to use one, and not just "As Integer = 703". I've found nothing in the VB.NET library or windows messages/functions docs.

Is it possible to read out the contents of a page that has already be loaded into a webbrowser...say IExplorer...? On 'normal' windows programs there is a way to externally control a program and its contents. But on a page loaded in a webbrowser i can't find a way to get external control of its contents and buttons ect..

I am sending data to some microchips with a serial port control using:
Code:
well, it work up to the value 9, but anything with more that one decimal place sends a byte value of the rightmost digit. So, 16 in the text box will send 6. Basically, it appears to be sending just 6, or 1 followed by 6. Is this how the serial port sends data...one digital at a time? Or, is the conversion to a byte failing?

Is there any easy way to determine the IP address for the computer that an app is running on. I looked through the System.Net namespace and didn't see anything of the sort.
Basically, I want to display the IP address to the user, instead of walking them through how to do an "ipconfig". They then can put that IP address into another app, so the one app can talk to the other via UDP.

I'm trying to upload a file via an IP address using the System.Network.UploadFile method. I have the IP address like this:xxx.xxx.x.x
At runtime, it says that it isn't a valid remote address because a valid address should include a protocol, a path and a file name.

I am trying to make a simple port scanner to scan a rang of IP's so like 192.168.4.245 to 192.168.5.100. I am using Visual Basic.Net 2010 and am having trouble converting the IP from a String to a Long so that I can increment it and convert it back to a String. For some reason VB.Net 2010 doesn't include the winsock controller and therefore I am having problems finding a method that works similar to inet_addr() which makes conversion much easier. I found an example on one of the forms here
Code:
Private Sub Command1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Command1.Click

For many years, I have sent data between 2 computers using serial ports."Here is the data", "Thank you for that data!" type stuff.Where do I get more information for doing the same thing with 2 computers that are networked together? Assume a local ethernet connection.I have experimented with serial-ethernet modems and that works well but I don't want any more hardware. Is there a good thread here I should read?I want 2 VB programs running and I want to exchange data periodically.

For my next project i'll have to create a TCP or UDP server based application. I know how to program a server but i am interested on the limitations of such servers.
how many connections a server may be able to handle at the same time. I suspect that this limitation is based on the type of transfer and how much data or how often it is send to the server.
I also read somewhere that a windows program is limited to 25 threads (connections) per core so if i would have a quad core i can have a maximum of 99 connections granted that the server itself is also a thread. Is that correct?
If the above is correct i wonder how to handle let's say 200 users at the same time. There must be some form / way to handle bigger request loads.

for a test project that i'm doing i am looking for ways to program a LED screen. I ordered a few LED screens (320x160) that can be connected together). Using a special controlcard the whole thing can then display text etc. Using the software that a Chinese supplier gave me. All the above works fine. But I am depending on the software I have. I have VB.Net experience and I would like to put the software aside and write my own software. I would like to set up the COM connection and tell what LED to activate.
Problem i'm facing is that the chinese cannot provide me good use of the software dll files. I need a small Vb.net program that does the above. Would somebody be able to figure out how to do this.

Using the Socket raw, with XP I can read without problems both the incoming packets and the outgoing packets. With Vista (I have tried also others Sniffers) is impossible to see the outgoing packets...WHY? what I have to do to see alse the outgoing packets? In reality I have not to read packet data or packet lenght... I need only to count the number of incoming packets and outgoing packets... but with Vista this job seems impossible... or not?

I'm having a hard time getting the fundamentals down about these TCP Socket classes.
When you use TcpClient, you can set the IP Address or domain name to connect to the server end of the socket. I see examples that use "localhost" as the first parameter for TcpClient. Is this just a broadcast over the network to find the server that has a TcpListener listening on the dictated port of the second parameter of the TcpClient declaration? With any IP address for TcpClient (I realize that's an option, though), how does "localhost" find the TcpListener server?
