Ascii Code For Termination Character For TCPServer / Client Communications?

Jan 5, 2009

I am working on a client/server based application and I have run into quite a few snags stumbling my way through I have resolved quite a few issues, and need help with something new. I am using a TCPIP client/server and I find that at the end of each loop when I am reading the data from the network stream it appends a character to the end. I have tried removing the last character but I am not sure if it is getting the whole character successfully because I still get lots of different errors both in binary and xml deserialization whcih I think is related to this. Does anyone know the ascii code for the termination character for TCPServer/Client communications?

.net - Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.TextFieldParser Changes ± Ascii 241 To ? Ascii 63?

Dec 11, 2010

I am using Microsoft.VisualBasic.Fileio.TextFieldParser to parse a CSV file that was created with Excel 2003. The parser is working great with the exception that it is converting extended ascii values to question marks! So if the file content was:

± 3
The TextFieldParser is returning
? 3

I have tried all of the encodings in the System.Text.Encoding package with no luck. I thought I had it with UTF7 but it was dropping other characters like replacing the + sign with a space.

Converting An ASCII 6-bit String To 8-Bit ASCII Characters?

May 9, 2011

I'm working on decoding a NMEA sentence that is a compressed 8-bit string. I'm having a very hard time of wrapping my head around the bit manipulation needed to convert this string. If someone could get me started with this it would be great.

Here is the incomming string:

!AIVDM,1,1,,A,14eG;o@034o8sd<L9i:a;WF>062D,0*7D

and here is the expected output:

Asp.net - Character Support - Translate Higher ASCII Characters To Lower ASCII Characters?

Aug 7, 2009

So I have an ASP.Net (vb.net) application. It has a textbox and the user is pasting text from Microsoft Word into it. So things like the long dash (charcode 150) are coming through as input. Other examples would be the smart quotes or accented characters. In my app I'm encoding them in xml and passing that to the database as an xml parameter to a sql stored procedure. It gets inserted in the database just as the user entered it.

The problem is the app that reads this data doesn't like these characters. So I need to translate them into the lower ascii (7bit I think) character set. How do I do that? How do I determine what encoding they are in so I can do something like the following. And would just requesting the ASCII equivalent translate them intelligently or do I have to write some code for that?

Also maybe it might be easier to solve this problem in the web page to begin with. When you copy the selection of characters from Word it puts several formats in the clipboard. The straight text one is the one I want. Is there a way to have the html textbox get that text when the user pastes into it? Do I have to set the encoding of the web page somehow?

Communications :: Send A Command Via RS232 Communications

Jan 26, 2009

I am using VB2008 Express and am curious how to send a command via RS232 communications. The string that I need to send is 02h PON 03h. The start and end bits are 02h and 03h.

How can I convert 02h and 03h to its ascii form. In hyperterminal, I use the sequence {(hold)ALT 0 0 2} on the number pad to send the start bit.

I am using this code currently without the start and end bits

Can't Seem To Figure One Out?

Nov 24, 2009

My programming days are many years in the past - so I'm trying to get back into it. My current problem is as follows - I have a word document that is set up as a mailmerge document that is merged to email (through outlook). The merge records are in an excel spreadsheet (the email address is in a field called EMAIL). My emails are getting rejected by the recipient domain because they're being sent too fast (so they therefore think that they're spam).

I need to create a VB Program that will use the document called MASTER and merge it with the spreadsheet called RECIPIENTS and send via Outlook. However, I need it to send the first 10 emails, wait 10 minutes, send the next 10, wait another 10 minutes and continue cycling through until all of the emails have been sent.

What Protocol Should Use For TCP Or UDP

Jan 14, 2011

I'm developing a filetransfer app in VB.Net..The sizes of the files vary, but can get up to 10+ GB.I already create a chat app as a test.On the clientside I run this code to connect to the server.[code]Can I also use this to transfer files?I want the app to work through a firewall and stuff. So I think I need the outgoing data on the client to go through port 80. On the server I want to be able to receive the data on another port (E.g. 8888). Is this possible? And final question is. What protocol should I use for this purpose TCP or UDP.

Figure Out A Way To Get The Even And Odd To Work?

Jun 22, 2010

I have two text boxes, submit button. and a dropdown list with the items(even, odd, and all). I want to calculate the sum of either all "Even", "Odd" or "All" numbers according the selection. In the code below, I have the "all" section working correctly but I'm trying to figure out a way to get the Even and Odd to work.

Some one suggested me to develope a good formula for determining whether a number is even or odd, then calling that from within the program as needed. I've tried that below with the IsEvenNumber function but got stuck. Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click

Figure Out The 'bytestowrite' Command?

Dec 1, 2009

I'm trying to figure out the 'bytestowrite' command, but I'm not having much luck.I'm sending some info over COM1 to and LED sign, and since it runs at 300 baud it takes a minute or so to transfer. I was trying to use the 'bytestowrite' command to find out how many bytes still needed to be sent, and use that info with a progress bar, but I'm always getting 0 when using 'bytestowrite'

Below is the code I tried to get the bytes left to write into a label box, but I've probably got it wrong (but I like to try to figure things out before I ask for help).

Private Sub Timer2_Tick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Timer2.Tick
Using com1 As IO.Ports.SerialPort = My.Computer.Ports.OpenSerialPort("COM1", 300, Ports.Parity.None, 8, Ports.StopBits.One)
Label1.Text = com1.BytesToWrite

[code]....

I thought putting it in a timer would keep checking the com port to see if there were any bytes to be written, but it always shows 0.

Using A ActiveX Protocol In VS 2008?

Jul 14, 2009

What I'm trying to do is get the information stored in a little "electronic card" trough a reader connected to my comport. I found a ActiveX protocol to communicate with the reader, but I've no idea how to use it. I'm pretty new to VB.net, and I don't have much experience in coding. So what I'm asking for is how do I use a protocol like this in a VB.net project?

Dim reading As New EmitEpt.EptReading

But that gives me the error "'EmitEpt.EptReadingClass.Friend Sub New()' is not accessible in this context because it is 'Friend'."If I remove "New", then I get the following error: "object reference not set to an instance of an object".
