Feb 10, 2010I want to test if the 2 objects values can be compared.
For example if I have a variable define as an object which contains a value of "A" and another variable defined as an object with a value of 0. (These must be defined as type Object.)
When I do a simple compare If Object1 <> Object2 Then etc. I get an error. So how do I test to see if the objects are comparable? I have looked at TryCast , DirectCast, Ctype etc but cannot see

Compare .net Objects To Fields In A Database?
Jun 16, 2010I have a connection string set up and a data reader.I have two textboxes on my form for users to type in. One textbox (txtLogin) is a user name and the other textbox is a password (txtPwd). I'm trying to compare what a user types into those two boxes to a table in a vfp database. The table I'm trying to compare to is open about 99% of the time so I need to be able to read from it in some type of "shared" mode.
My Select statement needs to be something similar to "select * from sites where clogin = txtLogin.text and cpassword = txtPwd.text"I just don't know how to get this to work properly.

Jun 18, 2009Is there a way to compare two dates (which include time) ignoring the time? I have a 1/1/2009 8:00am and 1/1/2009 9:00am and I just want to know if it is the same day, without any care to what time it is. I know I can convert the date and compare the strings, but is there another way?

Jan 12, 2011What's a sound approach to override the CompareTo() method in a custom class with multiple approaches to comparing the data contained in the class? I'm attempting to implement IComparable(Of T) just so I have a few of the baseline interfaces implemented. Not planning on doing any sorting yet, but this will save me down the road if I need to.
Reading MSDN states mostly that we have to return 0 if the objects are equal, -1 if obj1 is less than obj2, or 1 is obj1 is greater than obj2. But that's rather simplistic.
Consider an IPv4 address (which is what I'm implementing in my class). There's two main numbers to consider -- the IP address itself, and the CIDR. An IPv4 address by itself is assumed to have a CIDR of /32, so in that case, in a CompareTo method, I can just compare the addresses directly to determine if one is greater or less than the other. But when the CIDR's are different, then things get tricky.
Assume obj1 is 10.0.0.0/8 and obj2 is 192.168.75.0/24. I could compare these two addresses a number of ways. I could just ignore the CIDR, and still regard as obj2 as being greater than obj1. I could compare them based on their CIDR, which would be comparing the size of the network (and a /8 will trump a /24 quite easily). I could compare them on both their numerical address AND their CIDR, on the off chance obj2 was actually an address inside the network defined by obj1.
What's the kind of approach used to handle situations like this? Can I define two CompareTo methods, overloaded, such that one would evaluate one address relative to another address, and the second would evaluate the size of the overall network? How would the .NET framework be told which one to use depending on how one might want to sort an array? Or do some other function that relies on CompareTo()?
Open Directories To Compare Directory / File Names And Other Properties?
Aug 16, 2010I have several groups of files with idential names, but the files inside may or may not have identcal names, and may differ only in the size or date stamp. I want to combine them to save all unique directory names, and unique file names, and if the date/sizes are unique, then add some number on the end of the file name to make them unique as well. Only idential file sizes and names and dates will be discarded. How do you open directories to compare directory/file names and other properties?

Access Objects / Properties In An Application From Another DLL
Jan 31, 2006I have an application which is grouped in a MainApplication and serveral Modules (DLL's) The Main Application is basicly a Form with a NavigationBar on the Left Side (like in Outlook 2003) and an MDI-Parent. There is also a Simple Login Routine on this Form. I store the UserName after Loggingn to a Property. The DLL's holds functionallity and Forms for various Sections for example there is a Employee.dll which holds functions and a form to show all Employees.
On Loading of the Main Application I loop trough all dll's in a "Module"-Folder and extract NavigationItems from them which I add to the MainForms NavigationPanel. I don't have a reference to the Modules because I want to make it as flexible as possible so that it is possible to delete a Dll form the Module directory in order to remove the functionality from the MainApplication. The Modules could work also without the MainApplication if they are Complied as an exe insted of DLL of course. This works fine so far.

For example, is there anyway that automatically, when I create a Label, that it could already have AutoSize set to false, and BorderStyle to Fixed3D, etc.? I can already get the screen information by creating a new instance of screen and reading the information such as index, bounds and everything else.I'm trying to create a virtual screen object to hold the information from the screen so I can work with it, or add other properties to it.[code]This all works perfectly how I want it to. Except I would like to do one more thing. How can I make it so that instead of getting Virtual_Screen.Top, I could get Virtual_Screen.Bounds.Top? That way I could create other properties such as Virtual_Screen.Border.Top..I have no idea how to code, or what that would be called. It's hard to search for something you don't know the name of.

Aug 21, 2009For good reasons I would like to have something like truckA = truckB + truckC where only the loads of the trucks are added, not the license plate numbers. Also I don't really want to return a new object (lots of overhead), just change one or two of the properties. Only thing I can come up with is truckA.Load = truckB.Load + truckC.Load, or at best truckA.Load = truckB + truckC which still doesn't look elegant, and - worse - still requires the creation of a new Load object.(this is just a way of stating my problem; the real objects are quite big and complicated) Currently I have a Sub isSumOf so the code reads TruckA.isSumOf(truckB, TruckC)

I want to sort based on an integer property. Virtually every example I can find involves sorting strings.

The objects are kept in an arraylist called FriendsOfMine.

It's a real pain to scroll through the properties viewer and copy and paste each customised value for 30+ objects on a form... I was wondering if there'd be an easy piece of code or way about getting an (at least partially) automated printout/view of all the properties of the objects.
Was thinking some sort of private sub I could past into the bottom of the program and run on load, that gets all objects, and outputs the non-default properties to a report or something?

Jun 22, 2009I need to migrate from Excel 2003 VBA to Excel 2007 VBA. When Microsoft introduced Excel 2007 it removed many objects from the previous versions and added some new objects. Also it hid some properties of particular objects. These hidden properties can be viewed by going to the object browser, right clicking any object and selecting "Show Hidden Members". My problem is I need to access these hidden properties. Is there any way I can access these properties. I can successfully migrate from Excel 2003 VBa to Excel 2007 VBA with the same functionality?

One of the properties of this class is another custom class (Class2) with its own properties.I have a property grid with the selected object set to Class 1. I can see Class 2 as a property, but i would like to expand Class 2 to show its properties in the same property grid.
Im basically trying to do the exact same thing as the Font Class on a form. If you look at the properties of a form in the designer, you can see the font property. You can then expand that to show the properties of the font class.

May 9, 2011I'd like to rotate only one of the shapes in an animation, but the rotatetransform method applies this rotation to the whole view. I have several shapes which I want to remain stationary, and just one that should be rotated. I've been trying to use containers but so far this hasn't helped. This is visual basic on XP, using .net gdi+, system.drawing. I'm using translatetransform to establish a rotation center.

Implementation - Loop To Update Properties Of Each Object Of A Set Of Custom Objects
Jan 4, 2010I am using a loop to update properties of each object of a set of custom objects. The routine knows which controls to update because the controls value is not empty, I don't want the routine setting the corresponding properties to nothing when the control is empty. Now I know how to do this perfectly fine with IF statements such as:

But this feels really redundant doing that same IF block over and over for each property/control combination, I thought about creating a separate routine that takes the control as an argument and does all the repetitive IF blocks but I don't know how I could also pass an object property to tell the routine to update that particular property.

Here is an example of what I need to do for each text box control with "DATE" in the ID:
