Copying And Renaming Files Or Directories

But as you can see I can't put in concrete names of where to save it because I want the user to be able to choose where to save it as it will be saved on a server with folders for each individual user.

Application "Not Responding" When Copying Files / Directories

May 18, 2009

I am using FileCopy and My.Computer.FileSystem.CopyDirectory to copy certain files and folders. The problem I have is that when this operation is being carried out for a large directory (say 1gb or so, probably less) - the program goes into a Not Responding mode until the copying is complete. If you let it sit there, it will eventually resume itself once the copy is complete; however, my end user is going to think the program crashed.

Renaming Multiple Files Randomly?

Aug 10, 2009

I have started reading guides and such on how to use it and all but the reason I have gotten into it was simply because I need to write a program to rename every music file in a folder to randomize it because my mp3 player plays files from the filename and from first to last.

There are a lot of things I hope to add to this program later such as writing every filename into a document along with the number associated with it and when randomized again I would like it to redo the number according to the new random number, not to mention opening a directory to work with.

For now I just need to rename all the files in the folder the program is in to randomly generated numbers.

Renaming Files Based On Dataset Fields?

Nov 7, 2011

I apologize if it is not. I am trying to write a script in Visual Studio 2008 (using a VB project) that will, upon the clicking of a button:

- A file object will be created.

-Said file object will read in a number of files from a specified file path.

-A dataset will be created and populated with fields from two columns within a database table; app_id and company_name.

-The script will read through the file names and fields recorded in the dataset, renaming the file to the app_id if the original file name contained the company_name.

The code I have so far to do this:

Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
'Create the file object
Dim objFSO

The problem is that currently this code will only rename the file if the file name and company_name match exactly, ideally I'd need to include a clause to make it rename if the file name is "LIKE" or "contains" the company_name.

VS 2010 Add Directories / Files And Start Scanning?

Apr 21, 2011

I'm re-doing a small application I made a long time ago. It's similar to CCleaner, where it scans specific directories and removes temp files. My old application worked, but it was messy and only had a handful of locations. The new version has a ton more locations and files, but that creates a problem with how the original app was designed. In the old app (I made this a very long time ago) everything was just jammed into the main class, including variables, methods, etc. There wasn't a whole lot of thought put into it.Now, I'm trying to figure out the best way to make this class so when I'm done, I can release it to the community and it be easy to use.The main problem I'm having is how I should set up the methods. There are so many different types of directories and files, that I'm not sure if I should create a separate class for each method, or have a bunch of methods in one class or have one method in one class.

There are some directories that need to be searched recursively, some that don't, some files need a filter and others don't. I think that's the extent that I need. So, what do you all think is the best option so that it will be easy for the end user to just add the directories/files and start scanning?Right now, I have a base class that has two properties. One for directories and one for files, both of which are arrays.Actually, just as I'm typing this, I'm thinking I could create a class that represented a directory and another that represented a file. Both classes would have properties set for them that I could use in the main scanning class. That would allow me to identify what was needed for that directory/file, like recursive searching and filters.

Batch Copying Of Files?

May 17, 2012

I am busy writing a application that i can set up a list of files to copy from one location to a remote network drive.

THe program has a list of "jobs" in a datagrid that it loops through and executes in sequence. What i have now is a background worker that reports the status of which job it is on (File 1 of 5) but i would like something that shows the status of the current copying file as sometimes large files can look like it's stopped on the network

I am using the System.io.file.copy structure, but have also tried the my.computer.filesystem.copyfile (which shows the status in a "windows" copy box)

So, what i would like is some guidance on how to create a function that will copy the file but also report back progress periodicly. I don't want to read and write byte for byte as im worried this will be too slow.

Also, is there a better way/function to use to copy files? Looking for best speed
