DB/Reporting :: Updating RecordSet But Not Database?

I am attempting to run an update query on a Microsoft Access Database File and am not having any luck with the update. It appears to update the RecordSet but not the actual Access Database (when I run the following code, close the debug window, then re-open it a field referring to the Count_Value column reflects the update). I am using Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express to work with this code, if that is of any interest. DB/Reporting :: Using The SQLCommandBuilder Class - Updating Database With Dataset ?

May 19, 2010

I have got problem when using the SQLCommandBuilder class. For me it throws an error saying that the select statement does not return any primary columns.... Which is weird becouse i am sure it does since the select statement is "SELECT * FROM MyTable" I am prety sure that selects everything including the primary column which is set to primary , realy i checked and doublechecked.

Secondly i tried to manually set the column(0) as primary by setting it's property bu no such luck of making it work.

I have these two functions in a class that i instanciate an object from in the main program:

Code:
Public Function GetDB(ByVal DBName As String) As Data.DataSetDim SQLAdapter As SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter = Nothing

Try_SQLdataSet = Nothing

[CODE]...

This Functtion fills the dataset and returns it to my main program where i do lovely stuff with it. (Just as a side note this is a SCADA system and i always need the entire DB which is never bigger then just a few ( 6 ) entries so i must go for "*" ^^). Good part is, this works like a charm, i love it. Now i need to reset a few status bits etc and i assume with the update command. And that is where my joy starts to get stomped on a bit.... The code:

Code:
Public Function SetDB(ByVal dataTable As Data.DataSet, ByVal DBName As String) As BooleanDim SQLAdapter As SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter = Nothing
Dim SQLCommandBuilder As SqlClient.SqlCommandBuilder

[CODE]...

Now this would have been a great and small sollution to updating datasets with the server but obviously it doesn't work. There is that pesky error about my table having no primary key and I know it's lying it just want to annoy me :P. But seriously I am puzzeld why that error wont go away and i have exhausted all the tutorials i can find on this.

Updating Database From DataGridView?

Jul 18, 2012

I have a DataGridView that is attached to a BindingSource that gets data from a SQL Server database. I can populate the DataGridView without a problem. I can even insert/update it without issue if I run the update code from a click event of a button. But where I run into issues is when I try to update the database as soon as the user is done editing a row.

I thought that the DataGridView_RowLeave event would be perfect for that, but it actually does not commit the changes until it has been fired twice (that is, after an edit, I have to click on a different row or arrow down twice before the edit shows up in the database). Then I thought why not call the update code on both the _RowLeave and the _RowEnter? That worked fine for updates, but then I found that three records were inserted into the database when I added a new row to the DataGridView (the data gets inserted, then a null value, then the data again).

After digging around on the web for most of the day, I found that the _RowLeave event actually gets called pretty early on when you move to another row, so I figured maybe the changes made in the DataGridView aren't getting transmitted to the underlaying DataTable before the DataAdapter.Update method is being called. That would explain why the data would not update with the first call to _RowLeave, but would when using a click on a save button (since all the DataGridView events would complete before the button click event fires). So, I begain experimenting by placing my update code into various events. I tried _CellEndEdit, _CellValueChanged, _CurrentCellDirtyStateChanged (with a call to DataGridView.CommitEdit), and _RowValidating. I even tried calling BindingContext(DataGridView.DataSource).EndCurrentEdit() in conjunction with my update sub, but none of those would update the database when the focus left the edited row. :(

I'm at my wits end here. Surley it's possible to commit the changes made on the DataGridView to the database when the focus is moved off the edited/new row. It's obvious to me that I need to flush the changes shown on the DataGridView down to the DataTable, but I can't seem to find the right method/event to do just that.

VS 2010 Updating Database Using Datagridview?

Feb 22, 2012

I'm loading a table from my database into a datagridview. Removing (multiple) rows from the database and the datagridview works great. Now I need to be able to add records directly into the database as soon as I add a new value into the datagrid.

- the id is the same ID as in the database

- the id-column is read-only

- the "datum"-column is where I want to add a new date (as soon as I leave the column it should add it into the database and the id should be added, without reloading the database) Adding the id (without reloading the database) is actually the most important part, but I don't have a clue how to achieve this.

DB/Reporting :: Update Database From DataGridView?

Aug 27, 2009

Im trying to make a simple database editor using DataGridView.I have one DataGridView containing a lot of data on products and some parameters on how they should be tested. Some of these parameters, for example "Test method", is just a number. But if I look in the table for Test Methods that number has lots of other parameters. So if I select a "Test Method" Cell and click a button that table opens in a new form with just that "Test Method" (if I for example have selected a cell with the number 1, Test Method 1 will be shown in the new form). So far everything Ive said works. I can even change values and update it to database in the first "Products" table. So here is the problem The DataGridView that shows the products is bound to a table and always shows the same thing which makes it easy to change and update using the following code

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Me.INPUT_PRODUCTSTableAdapter.Update(Me.TestPlattformDataSet)
Me.TestPlattformDataSet.AcceptChanges() End Sub

This will change later when I add a search function. Then this will need the same modification aswell. The DataGridView thats shows the other parameters cant be updated using just this code cause I get an error that says

"InvalidOperationException" "Update requires a valid UpdateCommand when passed DataRow collection with modified rows."

It seems like the problem is that because I change the data under run its not really bound to the database. And I havent found any complete solution to this. I have found some similiar problems and it seems I need to update each row using the command

TableAdapter.Update(DataRow)

Here follows the entire code for showing the Parameter Table in a DataGridView. This does not work.

Public Class Form3
'ID is the value from the cell selected in the Products table
Dim ID As Integer

VS 2010 : Programmatic Edit Of Datagridview Not Updating The Database?

Jul 4, 2011

I am programmatically updating some columns in a datagridview. When the user has also updated some columns then my program generated changes are also saved to the database (MSAccess). If the user does not update a dgv column, my program edits are not saved. I have read in another posting somewhere that I should be updating the bindingsource rather than the dgv cells. I have some code that was attempting to do this but it doesnt work.

Dim dvr As Data.DataRowView
With TblClassMembersDataGridView
.EndEdit()
.CommitEdit(DataGridViewDataErrorContexts.Commit)

[code]....

PS. Is the bindingsource in a on-to-one relationship with the table returned by the Fill method? If not, I can see one obvious error.

DB/Reporting :: DataGridView Back To SQL Database Through Stored Procedure

Feb 18, 2009

I have an app written in vb2005 that allows users to search a sql database for a store name. Once a store is selected, it then presents the user with 12 different tabs, each with a DataGridView showing various bits of info about the store. It's a large and convoluted database, so I'm using stored proceedures to pull the data for each tab. Here's a sample of one of the subs that populates the tabs.[code...]

Now, this works just fine to populate the grids on the tabs, and the same code is copied into each of the subs that fill the grids (changing the stored proc, parameter and grid names, of course). The problem I'm having is how to move changes made to the data in the grid back into the database.

I have stored procs that do this (and the procs do work), I just can't seem to figure out how to trigger the stored proc when the user makes a change.

If it matters, there is only a grid on each tab, I did not use a binding source as I am trying to keep an abstraction layer between the data and the app. I did create a dataset, which is how I gain access to the stored procs, but I left the grids unbound and (as seen in my code) bind them at run time.

I am creating a reporting app that pulls information off of a Sql database and populates the data in a datagridview control (DVG).
