DB/Reporting :: Change The Connection Strings For The Local Computers?
Jun 9, 2009
I have finished my program and now i am ready to deploy it. The only problem is it is a multi-user application. All i want to do is simply run the program with the database from a server, and have other local computers with the program access this same database. I know that you have to change the connection strings for the local computers, but how can i go along doing this?

I have been struggling with the construction of an Access connection string. Here's the problem.My Visual Basic 2008 project is located in a disk partition on my hard drive that I have named S:. My Access MDB file is in the same location.When I deploy the application it obviously will not be in an S: drive on the user's machine. My concern is that if I construct the Connection String using the file designations on my computer as:
(Provider =Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source =S:MyApplicationmydatabase.mdb; User Id =admin; Password =
The deployed application won't know where to look for the data file. I know there are some shortcuts that will allow me to construct the connection string, but I do not know either the designated names or where to find them.

I have created a very simple Visual Studio .net 2002 VB# program. It consists of form1 containing a DataGrid bound to an Access 2007 Database using OleDbConnection1, OleDbDataAdapter1 and DataSet11.The location address of the Database will change based on the user so, I need to make the connection string variable. Problem is inserting the following string variable "source=" & strFileLocation & ";" creates a fatal error

I am attempting to write a program that will disable the Local Area Connection while leaving the Wireless connection enabled. My company is using net-books in our stores to demo air-cards and we need to keep them off of the LAN. I'm new to VB and VB.net, and it's been a while since I did any type of programming. I've gathered some code that others have posted in forums and tutorials and I'm working through a tutorial book, but I finally believe that I am stuck.

The connection string generated by VB only works for my computer because of the path and even tho within the program I used paths which only include the name of the file i need to load when i do that with the DB it doesn't works.
This is the message i get: An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file Database1.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I don't know how to join multiple datatables created in Designer in 1 single Datatable. I need 1 Datatable with all data in it so I can give that single Datatable to one single Tablix in ReportViewer (rdlc). Problem: ReportViewer Tablix can accept only one datatable at time and I need them all at once in one tablix.
How did I get stuck here:* I have added Dataset from Solution Explorer to my Project (ds1). Double click on that item gave me Dataset Designer (ds1.xsd). Here I have created 4 Datatables with all needed columns, mutually connected with parent-child relationships (one to many, nested). dt1 is parent to dt2, dt2 is parent to dt3, dt3 is parent to dt4 (dt1 > dt2 > dt3 > dt4).
On my forms I have binded all my controls to this 4 Datatables and their respective columns so the data is populated hierarchically to dataset (as planed). I have added ReportViewer Control to one form for reporting purposes and Design a new report (rdlc)...As I have read in past few days (read: week or two) I need to Join all my datatables to one single (flated) datatable somehow and then feed that DataTable to my Report.
So basically I have 2 questions: 1. How to join my 4 datatables? Can I do it from Designer or I must do it in code? 2. If I cant do joining from Designer how will I see this new datatable with all columns from my Report? If I wanna add a Dataset/DataTable to my Report I go to Tab Report Data - New - Dataset - comboTo SelectExistingDatasets and if Datatable/Dataset is not created in Designer I can not see it here to add it to work with it.

I need a simple method for a user to enter as many rows of data as they wish (probably won't exceed 50 in most cases and that's pushing it) and then store that data for retrieving the next time they want to reuse that list. I will also need to read the rows in for manipulating text in a file with those entries.
Would the best method to be to use the DataSet in VB Express 2008 and then use the DataGridView for allowing the display and entry of the data?

I'm trying to a open a connection to a local database and no matter what I try it just won't work (I'm pretty new to SQL Server and VB for that matter) I tried using 'sqlconnection' with different connection strings but none of them worked or gave me any useful error messages so I tried using 'OleDBConnection' instead, this hasn't worked either and it gives me this error instead:"A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in MyProgram.exe"
Here is the code I am currently trying:
Private Sub MemDetailsSearch_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
ConnectionString = ("Provider = Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data Source = Database.sdf")
DataConnect = New OleDbConnection(ConnectionString)

My boss wants me to create local databases on the light-side of things. I was researching on what solutions are available, we discussed the possibility of using text or xml files... but we dropped the idea since we want to use SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE command sets (or the like)I proposed the idea of using Access files (mdb) but he told me that he doesn't want the user to have Access installed on their computers.What are the choices avaible, am I forced to install Access on machines that would be using my VB .NET app to access mdb files?

I have several programs I have written for my music studio/production company. Many dealing with inventory, customer DB etc. All of my programs are in VB6 and I have started to convert them all to VB.NET. I am getting proficient with VB.NET and connecting to DB using the very simple and generic connection strings, Example:
dbProvider = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;"
dbSource = "Data Source = C:/develop/Customer Tracking/resource.mdb"
con.ConnectionString = dbProvider & dbSource

What is a dynamic MS Office Connection string? I have realized that each each version of MS Access has a unique Connection String. Now my concern is that if I use MS Access 2007, for example, it may haave compatibility/connection problems if an application is deployed in a machine with a different edition of MS Access. Is my understanding correct? If so, how to go around this hiccup?

I'm creating a program in VB.Net that heavily interacts with 2 large MSSQL databases. I do not know a ton of vb and I'm fairly new, but I would assume just having the connection strings in the code and releasing the program it would be quite easy for someone to reverse the program and get my connection info? correct me if I'm wrong. My question is I'm wondering if there is a safer way to use a connection string in my program. Would I just have to encrypt my app? Create a module or dll?

I've been looking over a bunch of code snippets and I'm just not understanding what is going on there.anding the connection, reading/manipulation, and closing pI keep reading all about these DataAdapters, Ole and Sql and Sqlce and I don't know which to use or whatever.I made a database in VB.NET 2010 that came out as database.sdf and I selected the Local Database option (I assume this is relevant?). I then populated the database with a row of data with column titles and a primary key. The table contains many different columns, but for test purposes, the following is relevant:
DB Name: db_test
Table Name: Locations
Primary Key Column Header: CITY

I have read and worked through all of the examples in the book "ADO.NET 2.O", but there is so much there with so many ways to handle data, I am having difficulty translating the examples into my own real life application. I am confused about creating runtime connection strings, connection strings in my app.config file, connection strings in the properties for a sql connection control, etc.
I have a midichildform with a datagridview control, and I use a table adapter to edit and update the SQL Server 2005 Express edition database. There is no problem there. However, I also have a button control that I want to use to "process" the data that has been updated with the table adapter. I want to open the updated table, read each record on at a time, manipulate the data and add a records to another table. Do I have to create a connection string and an oleDBconnection? Or can I somehow use the connection string that is in my app.config file? [Code]

I have two executables that access a DLL containing Data Access Layer objects Each exe can have a different config containing info on server and database name, connection string etc.How do I pass the config info to the DAL objects?
Obviously I can pass the config strings to the DAL objects every time I instanciate one, but that seems messy and repetitive as every class in the DAL will require Properties for the Config strings..if there is a way for the instanciated DAL objects to read some properties from the calling object without me having to pass them explicitly?
