I am performing a simple exercise of opening an SQL Server database connection, pulling the first record of a table from a DataReader object, and then closing the object. However, I have noticed that theres bit of a delay, about 5 seconds or so, in closing the connection. However, the delay only occurs after the command object executes the specified query. I've worked in a setup like this before and don't remember there being such a long delay while closing the connection. [Code] The connection closes almost immediately. What gives? I have narrowed it down to the where the .ExecuteReader line that causes the delay in the connection close. Whats causing the delay and how do I resolve it?

I have returned object from signature device and when i make quick watch on it, it told me that its an array of long and when i pass it to web method in my code behind (vb.net) it gives me nothing. note: i'm using an activeX to capture the signature from the device.
this is javascript code :
function OnSave() {
var sign = document.FORM1.SigPlus1.SignatureString;
PageMethods.Save(sign);
}
this is my webmethod:
<WebMethod()> _
Public Shared Function Save(ByVal obj As Object) As String
Dim obj1 As New PFSIGNATURELib.SigniShellSignature
[code]....
How to terminate function/code (not entire page) when it takes some time, for example, more than 1 sec?[code]...
I found the command "Server.ScriptTimeou", but it stops the entire page instead of one command.
I'm currently trying to write a football simulator but am having issues with the computer becoming unresponsive. There are long lines of code (several thousand lines) that are executed over and over as one run of the code is equivalent to one second of game time. While the game is setup to be like Football Manager where you watch the game live, there will also be cases where the entire game is simulated without you watching. When doing a full sim of a game, I just have a loop which executes the code block 7200 times (games go for two hour roughly).
At the moment this takes about a minute but even when I get it down to the desired 5-10 seconds or so, I dislike the fact that the computer becomes completely unresponsive during this time. In a round there are 9 games and you'll be simulating without watching 8 of them. You're looking at 1-2 minutes of simulation time or possibly more. I can't have a loading screen that long! How can I program the game so it runs these simulations yet the game still remains responsive? It'd be fine if the user could muck around in the menus and stuff while the simulation runs.
Is there a easer way of coding in stead of wrighting long long paragraphs like this in one line [code]All of this is on one line and i got lots of info to put down.."The game will begin on your 16th birthday with your mother waking you up. Today you are to go to the castle for the first time. Leave your bed and open your dresser for a Strength Seed. "
View 2 RepliesI have a bound datagridview in my code. I want to create a column to the right of each row that displays the sum of the values in the row.I've searched the net dilligently and have found nothing! Summarizing the columns is there, but not a row.
Oct Nov Dec Total
100 100 100 300
150 150 100 400
Etc....
I need to summarize data from an arraylist in vb. For example, I have a list of dates with different times. I want to summarize the dates and be able to display the times when I click on each date.I am new to vb, and I am struggling with this. I am able to read the file(ofd) with this info but I can't get it summarize, instead I am showing the date multiple times.
View 3 RepliesBeen trying to figure out how to do this for a while, but I can't seem to find anything that exactly covers what I'm trying to do. I'm really a novice when it comes to vb .net, so this might be staring me in the face and I wouldn't know it.I've got a Motorola MC3090 mobile barcode scanner running Windows CE 5.0 at work. I wrote a small program (in .net 3.5) that allows me to scan barcodes and then get counts for specific barcodes when I type all or part of the barcode into an textbox. That works pretty well for receiving, but I need something that works better for the reverse process (shipping things out).
I have an textbox which accepts the barcodes. When the scanner emulates an enter key press, it adds the code to a listbox and clears the input field. This process loops as many times as my quantity field specifies. There's another textbox which I use to input partial barcodes that I want counts for. It looks for strings in the listbox that match, dumps them into a second hidden listbox, and counts those.
If you're the tl;dr type, here's the short of what I want to do with all of the above. I want to take the contents of the visible listbox, summarize by listing each unique barcode, and have a count of how many of each unique barcode appears in the listbox.
I've got a datatable not attached to the database. It contains essentially raw data. I want to take that raw data and then process it more by running a select statement that includes a couple of sums and group by phrase.However, I can't figure out how to run a select statement on a datatable that is already in RAM. I created Table 1 and massaged it by adding some more columns after pulling the original data. There will be more in the final SQL Statement but I can't get this to work.
Table 1 (works fine)
Customer, InvDate, Amount
Contains multiple records for the same customer.[code].....
This table should only be one record per customer showing total amount of all invoices.I've been searching the internet for a couple of days but no luck so far.
Let say I have an array of data. In this array, It has 4 Columns, represented as:
Column 1 = Customer #
Column 2 = Customer Name
Column 3 = Past Order #
Column 4 = Past Order Amount
Each Row in the Array represents a past order, so the array has no known upper limit. End result is that I need to report in my VB app, the number of Unique Customers, and by that Customer, summarize the number of orders, and the total amount of those orders.
I have an integer array with 4 indexes. What is the easiest way to get the sum of all integers in the array.

while looping through all the cells
i am trying to allot a cell value to another cell value basing on some conditions
& finally delete one column.my code is as fallows
Dim i, x As Integer
i = 0
x = Me.DataGridView1.Rows.Count[code]....
error i am getting is : Object reference not set to an instance of an object.it is extremely surprising for me the same code has worked nice for me but why & how the same line of code is generating this error.
I got the following code from the demo code samples and just changed the textbox names. But it throws an error:
Private Sub Fill_TextBox()
Dim Num As Integer
Dim DSet As DataSet
[code]....
The error is:
System.NullReferenceException:Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Here is the code for the button click event;

I'm converting an application from VB6 to VB.NET, and am required to declare and initialise some controls in code (control arrays). I have it declared globally, so other forms can access the data stored within them, and then I try to manipulate them inside the Form_Load() sub:
Public lblDataZone() As Label
Private Sub Form_Load() Handles Me.Load
lblDataZone(0) = New Label
[code]....
The error I get says "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". I feel like I'm missing something huge here, but what's wrong with it?
I am looking to produce an Excel report from an Access database table. The data contains numerous records with fields for Site, Country, Region, Type and a Resolution Time. My problem is that each month the Sites change so I need to be able to write VB code within Access to read the database table and output 'Site' records for that month, grouped together along with the incident details for that site, e.g. The report would have the following headings:
'SITE' 'COUNTRY' 'REGION' 'TYPE' 'TOTAL' 'RESOLVED<3DAYS' 'RESOLVED>3DAYS' 'NOT RESOLVED'
MEL AUS APAC TECHNICAL 78 40 31 7
MEL AUS APAC HARDWARE 49 40 8 1
LON GBR EURO HARDWARE 90 40 40 10
As I will have over 30 different sites and these may change each month how do I loop through the data identifying each site and its associated field values? I have used the following code to open the data and loop through records printing to excel, but am stuck at grouping by site:
Set rst = db.OpenRecordset(sqlStat)
row=10.......
..... Do While Not rst.EOF
.cells(row, 1).Value = rst.Fields(0)
.cells(row, 1).Value = rst.Fields(1)
.cells(row, 1).Value = rst.Fields(2)...
I have a code section in my current active directory program in which it gives the error in the title above at the line:
If results.Path = "" Then from below code:
Dim results As SearchResult = Nothing
[code].....
In Visual Studio 2008 I am using :Private Declare Function BlockInput Lib "user32" (ByVal fBlock As Long) As Long To stop input from occuring during a search-replace operation.
BlockInput(True) ' do not allow input during search and destroy
Dim cursorIcon As Cursor
cursorIcon = Cursor
Cursor.Current = Cursors.WaitCursor
Then setting it to false at the end of the operation. It did not work, so I thought maybe it was because I was calling it from a child window, so I created a function in the mainwindow, and ran it like this:
FrmMain.BlockFrmMainInput()With these functions is the Main window:
[Code]...
It did not solve the problem. I thought maybe it was because I was running under the debugger, so I tried compiling and running it debugger-free, but that did not do any better. I am still getting input when I double-click the mouse on either form.
I stumbled upon the statement "If Me IsNot Nothing" several times. Often I find this in WinForms samples.I dont't get the sense or meaning of this line. "Me" refers to the current Object or Form, so if I am executing this line "Me" can't be Nothing. Or am I missing something here?Is there a way that Code of an Object is executing even when the current Object is Nothing?
View 12 RepliesI would like to ask some questions related some functions i want to make in my program:
1. I am using this function in order to get a the item code from the database Long.Parse(myReader(0)).ToString("2200000000000") the result i get is: 2200000059091. The form that i want the resultset is
22 (fix value) + item code (6 characters right justified) + 00000 (fix value) 2205909100000 how should i change my code to obtain this result?
2. The programs every time it runs creates a text file which i also attached it plu1.txt, when i try to open it with notepad i see all the lines justified, on the other hand when i open the text file with Wordpad or ConTEXT the lines are not fixed, others are longer others are shorter? What should i change in my code in order to have every line fixed lenght... The code i am using is the following
Dim myReader As SqlDataReader = myCMD.ExecuteReader()
Dim fNextResult As Boolean = True
Using myWriter As IO.StreamWriter = New IO.StreamWriter("c:everest
[CODE]...
3. third and last question is that my program every time it ends show up a pop up menu which says "Text is created." Instead of this i would like to create a file lets say log.txt and every time the program runs, it will overwrite on the log.txt file a line like this: system date + Text is created + with X lines (where X are the lines of the text plu1.txt) ex. 26-10-2009 14:56 Text file created with 15 lines
I created a typed dataset a day or so ago, then I added a whole bunch of tableadapter/tables with some relationships etc... suddenly out of nowhere it decides my dataset "is not defined". everywhere in my code where i use this dataset now has an error. I tried not to pull out my hair and do a Clean then Rebuild solution... out of nowhere it just refuses to generate code. Object reference not set to an instance of an Object. It would be nice if it was my object so i could find it but it's not.
Curiously I also lost the little database icon on the dataset in the solution explorer.I can still open it in the designer and preview my queries etc... it just wont make the code. it's driving me insane. anyone got a solution?
I have a datatable that has a resource in one field and hours used in another, it looks like this -
Resource Hours Used
Manager 1
Accountant 1
Field Staff 2
Accountant 3
Manager 4
Manager 1
Administrator 6
Field Staff 4
Manager 0.5
Administrator 1
What I want to do is be able to create a summary of the data table above that groups multiple occurrences of a resource and adds up the hours used for that resource, creating a summary that looks like this -
Resource Hours Used
Manager 6.5
Accountant 4
Field Staff 6

How can we run visual basic code and C++ in the same object?
View 3 RepliesI am fairly new to programming and hence require some help and advice. Here goes my problem.I have an excel workbook with defined list of names and I want to change the cell reference for each name using macros. I then want to loop this so that it can change the cell reference for each of the names. I have written a statement to achieve the above but it is throwing object defined error.

I am creating the pictureboxes through code in VB, and I am trying to give them instance names through code, since they do not exist in the forms physically (I cannot manually name each one), only when I run my application (using VB 2008 express). The pictures work, they are displayed when I run the application but I need to find a way to be able to call each one because I need to create motion animation for every separate picture object.
