DCOM With Limited Ports

Dec 1, 2011

We need to put a firewall in between our servers and a couple of clients. To do this we need to limit the number DCOM ports available so that we know what ports to open on the firewall.The question I have is do we need to limit the number of ports on all the machines inside the firewall as well as outside. This would cause an issue as we have lots of machines which would need to be modified.If DCOM has the intelligence to negotiate on port 135 which port is available on both machines which need to communicate, we will only need to modify the 2 machines on the outside of the firewall.

Panel Set To Autoscroll Is Too Limited

Oct 7, 2011

I am using a panel control in vb.net (2010) to build a timeline of images. These are very small images (320x180) and I am running into a limit of 240. While the panel does not complain when I add more - it will only scroll to the 240th one.[code]...

I am counting on some of the built-in functionality of the panel in autoscroll mode (being able to bring any of the thumbnails into view), etc. I am certainly not averse to purchasing a third party control for this. I really need to be able to display 1000 or more thumbnails!

C# Switch Statement More Limited Than .net 'case'?

May 4, 2011

I was reading an interesting article here and it made an interesting point about the 'case' statement in vb.net vs the 'switch' statement in C#, which I've pasted below:The following Visual Basic Select Case statement can't be represented in C# with a single switch statement:

Dim Condition As Integer = 55
Select Case Condition
Case 1, 3 To 5, 10, 12, 14, Is > 50

[code]....

I've always found the switch statement in C#, with dropthrough and consequentrequirements for a break in each case, to be a bit unwieldy. Is there any reason they haven't enhanced the switch command to allow these situations? W

EDIT AFTER CLOSE: I'm surprised this was closed, really. With the number of extension methods and helper classes I've found online for other things, I thought an enhanced 'case' would be a good chance. I somewhat hoped a luminary such as Jon Skeet may have commented on the background reasoning, rather than the individuals below who've obviously thought 'religious debate' as soon as more than one language is mentioned.

Dragging An Object In A Limited Area?

Aug 26, 2011

I want to create a dial which is basically a circle that I can drag around in a circular motion. Ive looked at using the code in an earlier post which allows you to drag items around a screen but I cant figure out how to confine the movement so it only allows the user to drag this circle around in a circular motion. Any coordinate altering I do just looks snappy.

VS 2008 Locking An Application After A Limited Period?

Sep 13, 2009

I am writing an application that I want to give to a select number of customers.

What is the best solution to use so that after the trail period (1 month) the application will no longer work.

I was thinking that if they are interested in purchasing the software I will give them a license key or something, to unlock the application. However, I would like to make this unique to every computer.

I am have a very limited budget as I am working on my own. So is there any free 3rd party products that does this?

I was thinking of writing the date the application was installed in the system registry, and each time the application loads it will check if this date is over one month. However, the user could turn back the date on their computer.

Another, solution I was to have the application run some many times. For example, the user can only run 30 times. Then it will lock.

C# - Hash Function To Obtain Limited Length Result

I need to hash a number (about 22 digits) and the result length must be less than 12 characters. It can be a number or a mix of characters, and must be unique. (The number entered will be unique too). For example, if the number entered is 000000000000000000001, the result should be something like 2s5As5A62s. I looked at the typical, like MD5, SHA-1, etc., but they give high length results.

Make RadioButton Only Usable A Limited Number Of Times?

May 15, 2009

I need to know to limit the number of times a radio button can be used. Maybe the number of times the radio button has been used can be stored in an XML file, and when the user wants to reset the counter all they would have to do it delete this file. I really don't know, that's why I'm asking you. But,the program will append a string every time a button is clicked with a radio button selected, I just need to know how to, for instance only allow RadioButton2 to be used in this manner say... 15 times.

Write A Windows Forms Application That Responds To A Limited Set Of Voice Commands?

Mar 11, 2010

The goal -- use VB.Net to write a windows forms application that responds to a limited set of voice commands after the user says a keyword, (such as "Wake Up"). I have the following code I am using from another site but I am getting an error I do not understand (nor do several others who posted comments at the same site.)

Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Deployment

[Code].....

If I had any understanding of how to create a grammer file I MIGHT be able to avoid this error completely, since I am only interested in a few voice commands (maybe 30), not the whole 60,000 word dictionary.

MS Excel - Appealing, Structured And Neat Appearance For Ease Of Usage By People With Limited IT Abilities?

Mar 2, 2010

I'm currently working on my (business) master's thesis... the topic is capital budgeting tools to manage major investments for a European energy supplier.So far the company has used MS Excel for calculating relevant data to make decisions on whether to invest money in new projects or abandon them. There usually is a host of input data, lots of basic calculations and just two or three outputs (such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment etc) .It is my task to develop a new excel template or decide on buying a completely new software license, if excel proves unable to provide the functionality the company needs.

So far I have only very limited programming knowledge, stretching to Java basics, some HTML code and SQL Databases.However, a colleague hinted at the fact that the VB.net programming language can be easily learned and used to improve excel considerably. Ideally I would need excel to be able to:

- make sure people putting data into our template don't mess with it

- be able to communicate with a database

- have an appealing, structured and neat appearance for ease of usage by people with limited IT abilities

- provide all output, including sensitivity analysis charts, in a structured, printable overview

.net - Accurate Windows Timer - System.Timers.Timer() Is Limited To 15 Msec

Jan 15, 2009

I need an accurate timer to interface a Windows application to a piece of lab equipment.I used System.Timers.Timer() to create a timer that ticks every 10 msec, but this clock runs slow. For example 1000 ticks with an interval of 10 msec should take 10 wall-clock seconds, but it actually takes more like 20 wall-clock sec (on my PC). I am guessing this is because System.Timers.Timer() is an interval timer that is reset every time it elapses. Since it will always take some time between when the timer elapses and when it is reset (to another 10msec) the clock will run slow. This probably fine if the interval is large (seconds or minutes) but unacceptable for very short intervals.Is there a function on Windows that will trigger a procedure every time the system clock crosses a 10 msec (or whatever) boundary?

UPDATE: System.Timers.Timer() is extremely inaccurate for small intervals.I wrote a simple program that counted 10 seconds several ways:

Interval=1, Count=10000, Run time = 160 sec, msec per interval=16
Interval=10, Count=1000, Run time = 16 sec, msec per interval=15
Interval=100, Count=100, Run time = 11 sec, msec per interval=110
Interval=1000, Count=10, Run time = 10 sec, msec per interval=1000

It seems like System.Timers.Timer() cannot tick faster that about 15 msec, regardless of the interval setting.Note that none of these tests seemed to use any measurable CPU time, so the limit is not the CPU, just a .net limitation (bug?)For now I think I can live with an inaccurate timer that triggers a routine every 15 msec or so and the routine gets an accurate system time. Kinda strange, but...I also found a shareware product ZylTimer.NET that claims to be a much more accurate .net timer (resolution of 1-2 msec). This may be what I need. If there is one product there are likely others.

Unhandled SqlException In VB 2010 Express Thta Does Not Occur In VB 2008 Express?

Oct 16, 2010

I tried to start using VB 2010 Express with a program I originally developed with VB 2005 Express that I moved to VB 2008 Express successfully a couple years ago. It uses a database file (*.mdf) that is on the computer ( not out on a server). When attempt to run the program in debug mode, I get the following error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsTomMy DocumentsQuizzing StuffQuestion Database 2010QuizQuest ionGameQuizQuestionGameinReleaseQuizQuestionDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."

I first made a copy of the entire project folder that was working in VB 2008 Express and gave it a different name. In VB2010 I opened the project in the copied folder and it said it successfully converted the project. I am able to open the Data Source inthe Designer and see the database structure as I expect. I think the project is still using SQL Server 2005 Express (because it is what is checked in the list of prerequisites on the Publish tab).

Note, I have programmed off and on for many years, but fairly new to using databases and SQL Server.

I can do any of these operations using the Query Designer, but I want to do it in code. I can post some code if necessiary, but I thought it might just be some property that I had not set in the designer.

XCopy Deployment Of A VB Express App Which Uses A SQL Server Express Database?

May 13, 2005

It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework?It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database.To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed.What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.
