File I/O And Registry :: Serializing And Deserializing An Array Of Collections

Aug 28, 2011

I'm developing a program that captures a bunch of information entered by a user on a tab form into five different structured arrays. I want the data to be saved into a single file and reloaded by the program into a similarly built series of structured arrays through a different form.If I understand the process of serializing collections right, I create a single ArrayList variable to capture each of the five Structured arrays.[code]

1. Do I have to declare one variable of the same type as the one in the first element of the ArrayList, or does having the public variable declared in the Class that's going to take this information already cover that?

2. Once I deserialize into the newly declared Rules ArrayList in the new form, is it a simple matter of setting the duplicated variables in the new form equal to the relevant element in the ArrayList? For example, if I have a new Public Roster As RosterDesc variable declared, can I set it equal to Rules(0) and it would automatically populate every element in the same order as they were created in the original form?

File I/O And Registry :: Writing Generic FileSave Routine For Collections

Mar 12, 2009

I want to write a generic file saving routine where the routine is passed data in the form of a collection and it sets a containsStructure flag. I wanted to be able to save the data from the collection, but if it is a collection of structures I want to be able to extract the data from the structure to write to the file.

The only trouble is, that I cannot do something like:
For Each s As dataStructure In data
Next
Since the compiler complains that dataStructure is not defined. Is there a way to code around this?

File I/O And Registry :: Copying Multiple Files From An Array?

Mar 28, 2011

I'm trying to copy multiple files from a directory, put them into an array, then copy just the 30 newest files(I haven't coded the 30 newest loop yet). I added a list box to the following code just to ensure the all the files are storing into the array properly... they are. When it try's to copy, it renames the first file to .log, then tells me that the .log file already exist. How do I get it to copy and keep the source file name in the destination folder Eventually I'll loop this and grab only 30 of the files.

Here's the code I'm playing with:
Private Sub transferButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles transferButton.Click

VS 2008 (De)Serializing Multiple Objects Into One File

Dec 21, 2009

I am trying to create a load and save function for my customizable Menu/Tool/StatusStrip controls (see signature). Those three controls use a single AppearanceControl class, which is mainly just a large list of properties (Colors) which control the colors of the Menu/Tool/StatusStrip.

I want to be able to save and load the values of these properties so the user can store them and load others with ease. Serialization seemed the obvious answer, although I never used it before.

Now, there is a slight problem that I cannot serialize Colors, so I simply gave each Color property the XmlIgnore attribute, and created an Integer property that gets and sets the Color property (using Color.ToArgb and Color.FromArgb). This way I can serialize the color properties succesfully.

Then, there is another problem. The properties are not all in the AppearanceControl class. Instead, the AppearanceControl class has a large number of subclasses, which in turn contain the color properties.

As a small example, I may have this:

vb.net
Public Class AppearanceControl
Private _toolStripColorProperties As ToolStripColorProperties
Private _menuStripColorProperties As MenuStripColorProperties

Serializing And De-serializing Objects?

Feb 27, 2011

I am having problems with serializing and de serializing my objects. The following is my code for serializing buttons and labels which I have in my form.

Dim nodes As New List(Of nodeclass)
Dim objStreamWriter As New StreamWriter(filelocation)
For Each btn As Button In myNodeBtns
Dim u As New nodeclass

[code].....

I get an error: There is an error in XML document (20, 3).Now I have found out that this is because I have 2 root elements and 2 xml declerations. When I save the xml for the button and te xml for the label in 2 different files, I have no problem. However I have no idea how to go about saving the xml for both of them in the same file and deserializing it back.

File I/O And Registry :: Reading Multiple Keys From The Registry?

Aug 27, 2008

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.

I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.

I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.

In this key:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.

My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.

Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?

I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

C# - Deserializing Objects With New Members

Jan 23, 2011

According to a mspress book (MCTS for Exam 70-536 .NET 2.0): You might have version compatibility issues if you ever attempt to deserialize an object that has been serialized by an earlier version of your application. Specifically, if you add a member to a custom class and attempt to deserialize an object that lacks that member, the runtime will throw an exception. In other words, if you add a member to a class in version 3.1 of your application, it will not be able to deserialize an object created by version 3.0 of your application.

Now... As curious as I am I went and created a project, serialized a class, added a new member and attempted to deserialize the class to the new object. To my surprise it worked and the newly created member was set to null by default (even if it had another default value).
