File I/O And Registry :: Use The Bitmasking Capability Of The FileAttributes Enumeration To Indicate Which Attributes Changed?
Nov 18, 2009
I've got an issue with an Access97 replicated database that I'm writing a small monitoring app for. I've got FSW's to track changes to the necessary files, but am having some issue in enumerating exactly what has changed in some instances, specifically when attributes may have changed. I'm using a similar strategy to track this as I did for changes in size. I've got a Private class variable for the size of each file and a local method variable and compare the two, when different, update the class variable for the next comparison.

I am trying to read all the attributes, there are 3, from a single node. This is what I tried from an example I found:
Code:
Dim xl As New XmlDocument
xl.Load(XMLfile)
Dim rn As XmlNode = xl.SelectSingleNode("p1")
[code]....
I have used a messagebox to show the xl.OuterXml, I see the file is loaded.

I'm using FileSystemWatcher to monitor a file on a windows server which links into a news ticker on our desktops. The ticker watches the file and updates accordingly. I've successfully got the ticker to watch for a creation and deletion which is great but the changed function doesn't seem to trigger. Out of interest, I tried this function on the network drive AND a local disk with the same results.
I've upped the buffer but I can't see what else I can do to change it! In the short term, we can probably live with just deleting and recreating the file with any changes that are required, but it would be nice if the ticker would just watch for file changes.

I have just received an interesting feedback from a VB.NET customer using our product - for some reason intellisense hidden a certain enumeration value. After a small testing I have found that this is likely a bug in IntelliSense: [URL]..To be honest, I did not expect this problem with such a basic stuff like this. Have you seen this in the past? For me, it doesn't work in all VS versions...
Anyway, feel free to track this issue if you are coding in VB.NET.

When my program first launches, it generates a GUID which is then saved to the registry and compared to an online database when an internet connection is detected. If it is a valid registry key, another registry value is saved stating that it is valid. Is there a way to protect these 2 registry entries from being changed?

I changed my Username on my computer from i.e. "xxxxxx x xxxxx" to "Dennis"
VB 2008 during a compile gave me the following error: Error reading icon 'C:Usersxxxxxx x xxxxxAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0VSProjectApplication.ico' -- The system cannot find the path specified.
The file "VSProjectApplication.ico" is in 'C:UsersDennisAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0'
Somewhere in the VB2008 "configuration" files I believe that I need to manually change the old path to the new path.
I found the old path in the ".suo" file. The ".suo" file is not a text file. How can I edit the .suo file, save it so that it will work?

I have an application that I need to be able to read and save a bunch of registry settings before they are changed. The purpose of this is to revert any new changes back to the original configuration. My application checks the state of each of the registry keys on startup. Is there a way to have it save the current configuration and then reload that configuration later ?

I am writing an administration tool for a game. I have a list of weapons in the game, and each weapon has a unique Id (numeric). Until recently I had this Id just 0, 1, 2, 3, etc... Now however I need some way to allow the user to restrict use of some weapons, and store that information in an Access database. The most obvious approach I thought was to give the weapons Ids that were powers of two: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc... This way, a user can check a number of weapons (via checkboxes or whatever), and I simply store the sum of their Ids in the database. Then I can use a bitmask and the bitwise And operator to check which weapons are restricted and which aren't.
Example: the user selects weapons with Id 2, 4 and 16. The database then stores the value 2+4+16 = 22. Later, I come around and want to check if some weapon is restricted. I then take the bitwise AND operator of 22 and the Id of that weapon. If the result is the Id of the weapon, that means the weapon is restricted. Just the usual bitmasking..Anyway... Long story short: that won't work for the simple reason that I have too many weapons! There are 81 weapons (and counting...) if I counted correctly, which means I'd need values up to 2^81. As far as I know no integer value type in .NET supports numbers that high, except perhaps the BigInteger. But remember: I have to store those Ids in the database as well theoretically even up to 2^82 - 1 if the user decides to restrict every weapon), and I don't think an Access database supports anything over 2^64 (long).

Currently, I am try to get the email addresses that have been saved or stored by the user of the computer. This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.
I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.
In this key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?
I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

I have searched a lot on the web about changing file attributes in .net , it takes me a long time to get the final code but it was really good. But after all of my search I didn't know why we use "And" when we compare file attribute like this:
If (System.IO.File.GetAttributes(FilePath_txt.Text) And System.IO.FileAttributes.Hidden) = System.IO.FileAttributes.Hidden Then
MsgBox("File is hidden")
Else
MsgBox("File isn't hidden")
End If
Otherwise when I want to set Multiple attributes for on file I have to use "Or" with it like this
System.IO.File.SetAttributes(FilePath_txt.Text, IO.FileAttributes.System Or IO.FileAttributes.Hidden Or IO.FileAttributes.ReadOnly)I know this isn't a big problem but , I can't write a code I don't know how it is actually works.

I just bet the answer to this question already exists, however I saw no search mechanism under the forum. Anyhow, I would like to change registry data, and this code is asking for an instance to the object.
Dim RegKey As RegistryKey = My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwa reAnyDWGSoftwareDWGtoPDFProSettings", True)
RegKey.SetValue("OutputPDFFileOpt", 1)
Finally, I want to apply this setting to the program on four different computers (local, and three others on the network).

m_ArchiveBoolean, m_HiddenBoolean, m_ReadOnlyBoolean, m_IndexedBoolean, m_CompressedBoolean are all form level booleans that's set from their appropriate Checkboxes on the form before this code runs in a BackgroundWorker.
Why is it that this code works:
Try
Dim fi As New FileInfo(element)
With fi
If m_ArchiveBoolean = False Then
[code]....
In this 2nd one attributes are being changed, but they're the wrong ones and I can't pinpoint it right off hand.
Edit: What the overall goal of this is that if the user has the attribute checkbox checked then the file needs to have it set, other wise the attribute (if it's present) needs to be unset.

I am trying to figure out the numSamples in this:The canonical WAVE format starts with the RIFF header:
0 4 ChunkID Contains the letters "RIFF" in ASCII form
(0x52494646 big-endian form).
4 4 ChunkSize 36 + SubChunk2Size, or more precisely:
[code]....
This works fine for getting the wave file info, It just doesn't display the numSamples which I need.

So I have been searching around the next and keep finding solutions that all have errors due to upgrades. Basically what I want to do is load the following type of XML file when a button is pushed:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!-- Do not edit this file -->
<DATA version="1.0" xsi:schemaLocation="[URL]" xmlns="[URL]" xmlns:xsi="[URL]">
<NOTES> <NOTE NameId="Name1" Colour="13" PNotes="Test7" />
[Code] .....
But after that I want to sort out the attributes. I want all of the NameId's to go into a ListBox. After I get that problem sovled I am wanting to have the info in the PNotes attribute to be displayed in a TextBox when the connecting NameId is selected in the ListBox.

I have an application that uses a text file for its settings. This file is placed in the application folder but deployment sets its file attributes as "Read Only". I have to manually change this attribute every time I deploy the application or an upgrade. I tried (successfully) to place the text file in the "Documents and settings|All users|Application Data" folder, creating a specific folder for my application in which to place my file. The folder and file were created by the setup process but then, users who did not have admin rights still did not see the file, let alone open it.
I have gone back to placing my text file in the [Programs files]|[Manufacturer]|[Application name] folder but am saddled with manually changing the attributes. Is there a way I can do this programatically during deployment (e.g. by some post-deployment process)?
