I have a form that when a user clicks on a button that it opens a new window with a dataset. Is it possible to be able to edit that dataset and have messagebox.shows along with that for approval?
View 2 RepliesI have a ComboBox that is databound to an ObservableCollection of strings. The ComboBox is also editable, so you can either enter in your own value or select one from the list. The issue I'm running into is the index of SelectedItem seems to be the index of the last item you selected when you've entered in your own value in the ComboBox, though it's -1 when you have IsTextSearchEnabled set to true. The problem is, if someone entered their own value and then decide to instead select the item on the ComboBox that had been selected before, the index doesn't change so the SelectionChange event doesn't fire. How could I get an event to fire in this situation?

We must be doing something wrong though because we cannot seem to get encryption and the ability to reconfigure connection strings working well. For example, when the application starts, it checks if the connection strings are "Protected", and if they are not, we encrypt them using the following function:

Then comes another issue. If a user installs an update for the application, the first time it runs, nothing can connect if the config file was previously encrypted. A restart of the application (second time running) will fix the issue. with all of the battles we are fighting here, I wanted to ask if we are doing this right? How should we be encrypting and allowing updates. If you need to see the exceptions thrown, I can provide those upon request (will need to change some code to get them again, but it is doable).

I am using VS2008, I need to update a vb6 application that I wrote a while back and make it more user friendly. [EDIT] I am not using any of the vb6 code, this is a complete rewrite.[/EDIT] The application basically creates ZPL based on user inputs, it sends the ZPL to the printer via the parallel port and we have our label. I know there are pre-written pieces of software that do this but I have a few other things going on that are not an option for a pre-written label application.
The task at hand at this point is creating a form which will display a mock-up of the label and allow the user to create text, rotate it, move it, re-size it etc. I will also have to add in image support a little further down the line but I figured i would keep it simple to start out. This is my first major project in .net (the company has been hesitant to spend the money until now and I haven't had the time to do much on my own.)
I think the best place for me to start would be with a simple form with a button that allows me to create text and edit it only. I am unsure of the best way to pull this off, should I be using a label, a text box with the design styles turned off or something altogether different that I may not know about?
To summarize:
a) What type of object should I be using?
b) How would I go about creating it?
c) How should I go about making it movable/editable at runtime?
As an aside, I am aware that the ThermalLabel SDK would probably be beneficial in this application but the company is not willing to spend anymore on this project.
All I want to do is build some kind of table-like or grid-like control in my form that has two columns. An element in the first column should be a checkbox that is changable by the user, and an element in the second column is some un-editable text. Of course, when the user checks or unchecks a checkbox, I have to be able to handle that event and figure out which row it came from.I've been trying this all day with no luck. Do I use a ListView or a DataGridView? If the answer is DataGridView, do I add columns and rows to it directly or do I try to make a DataTable which I then assign to the DataGridView's "DataSource" property?Is is possible to make editable checkboxes in a DataTable? I succeeded in making checkboxes by making a DataColumn of type boolean, but then I couldn't check or uncheck them during runtime.

View 6 RepliesI am making a program in vb.net (visual basic) that has two forms. I have one as a sort of "main" base which will be behind everything. Then I have another additional form which is suppose to go on top of the "main" form. Well I get this to work when I show both of the forms, but I want the smaller (additional) form to be centered onto the main form. If you want an easier sense of it, its a small box in a big box. (all centered and aligned). Does anyone know how to do this?

View 2 Repliesi'am having trouble in making a spell checker for vb.net richtextbox control.I have made a form with richtextbox control and a panel control. I have put a listbox control in the panel control and filled with certain words. What iam able to do is whenever i select a word and click a button the panel appears just below the word (using get position from char) and display the choice. What iam not able to do is:
1) Select each word one-by-one whenever i click a button say F1 - I know keypress event but how do i select the words through keypress. I know they are separated by spaces but iam not familiar as to how to take advantage of it. The major problem being that there can be 2-3 words together sometimes colored as red. Eg: What i want is when i press F1 first time "this" is selected, next time "is" is selected and next time "nice car color" is selected. The two things are spaces and red color but i don't get anything from it.
2) Display the panel correctly within the main form's border. Right now when i select the last word of the sentence some part of panel disappears as it hides behind the main form. Eg - only 1/4th appears and rest hides. I can't find a way to limit it from moving when it has reached the main form size. I want to constrain it between top-bottom and left-right border of main form.
I've been working on this project for two weeks now and I'm drained from all the hiccups I've come across. Now I've hit a brick wall.I'm making a "simple" order form in Visual Basic 2010 that calculates the amount due for an order and then from the total determines what the shipping will be. Problem: I have to figure out a way to allow a customer to place an order form for multiple items. (I'll assume that a customer will not place an order for more than 20 items). View 5 RepliesIn my application, I have created a dataset which is used as a lookup data and I have a couple of forms that use this dataset.
Generally, VS will generate a line of code that fills data into dataset using tableadapter when the form is loaded.
I have parent and child forms. In the parent form I've already filled the dataset and I don't want to fill the same dataset again and again every time I load a new child forms that use the same dataset. Are there any ways to do that? Or is it ok to fill the dataset for every form?
Can it cause any performance to my application?
Here is a wierd case - I am making a game in Visual Basic Express 2008 with several forms. Each windows form I've given a quit command that works well to end the game. (Me.Close) However if instead I click on the big X button that windows provides in the upper right hand corner - it does not look to truely stop the program.

I'm having a hard time to find out how to pass at run time a parameter which I defined in an adapter in a dataset. When I preview the data I can insert the value manually, but I was not able to find any code around how to pass it in the visual basic code.
View 2 RepliesI'm new to VB2008 and SQL Server. I have two forms (frmCustomer and frmDetail). The frmCustomer has a datagridview containing general data of customers, and a button to open frmDetail, which contains each customers detail information. All data modification is done on frmDetail (add, delete, and edit). Currently, both forms are binded to the dataset (same table). When the two forms are loaded, each form performs a FILL function that retrieves the data from SQL Server. In addition, all modifications done on frmDetail does not show up on frmCustomer until I perform the FILL function again on both forms. Seems like I'm maintaining 2 sets of data from the same table, and I think I'm doing more work than I have to. I'm sure there are ways to make this easier, such as bind both forms to a single dataset, so I don't have to do everything twice.

Now this means that when each form is loaded I also have to load the relevant data into the dataset instance of that form (basically i am loading the same data more than once).

i have 2 list boxes.. Qty and Cost both of these are populated from a sql database. The code is suppose to read through the listboxes and multiple the Cost by the Qty and then replace the Cost with the new result. The Cost listbox is populated with the cost of one item. The reason i am not doing this calculation in the sql query is because the sql query is very complicated filter out a bunch of stuff to show just the qty of the item...

Am devloping an application with multiple forms, which reside on top of a main form. i.e the main application window. The 'child' forms do not need to be linked in any way as they do not pass information to the parent form, as all the parent form does is act as main window.Now I would like to know what is the correct way for the 'main window' form acting as a container for the other forms? So that all the smaller secondary forms stay focused on top of the main application form, that when the main window is minimized, so these forms should do also etc..
I have read other posts and they mention, leaving all the forms standard i.e. IsMdiContainer = False and then using form.showDialog() to call the secondary forms. This did not work for me as what happens is that as soon as I give focus to the main app form, the secondary form disappears underneath.I tired making the main app form IsMdiContainer = True and when it loads calling:
frmMemberForm.MdiParent = Me
Now this works, because I can click off the form and minimize the app etc and the frmMemberForm doesn't disappear. However if i close the MemberForm and reopen it, it looses this property and once again when it looses focus, it will disappear.
What I mean is that when I make queries on a Parent Form. Child forms can also retrieves the datatable /datarows from its parent form.

I have written the code to pull down the data into a data store, but I dont know the BEST way to put the data into a set of tables. My first thought was to traverse the nodes and add rows into tables but I figure there must be a native VB process that reads the xml and puts it into the the appropriate table. How to code up the process for getting the data into a set of tables that match the xml. So lets say I have a Summary table, I would like all the data about each track to go into that table. Then I would have a Races table and have the data for each race go into that. What I have done already is import the xml into Access to create the tables (which was a breeze!) and then link that data source to my project. So I have the tables already built.

2. have a progress bar show until this action is complete.
The main problem is that I can't figure out how to tie the "progress bar" to the action of "pulling the dataset"

I have added a SQL Server datasource through the wizard. I created my forms which were bound to the dataset. Is it possible to change the datasource and dataset names while updating the dataset the binding controls of the form?
For instance, Server 1 has DB1 and Server 2 has DB2 (DB1 & DB2 store the same information/tables). Is it possible to keep the forms and only update the binding information if I want the forms to use DB2?
I have a dataset that I search using the
dataset.tables("table").Select("WHERE clause")
method to query. I then use a datarepeater to display the results. Is there a way to programatically tell if no results are returned? I'm aware of the Dataset.tables.Rows.count, but can this be done after the select method?

My background is mostly Access VBA and I am having to learn VB.NET. I am trying to recreate an Access 2007 application I wrote into VB.Net. We are looking at using a hosted SQL Server so we do not have to worry about remote offices or replication. I am using VS 2008 and SS2008.My issue is that I need to create a login form in VB that with look at SQL Server DB and return a dataset record matching the username and password. There are many tutorials on here but do not match what I am looking for.I have a stored procedure with 2 parameters (@prmUser and @prmPassword) named spLogin.I need to call the sp and pass the parameters to SQL Server DB and return the complete row of data that is matched from the button_click event on my form.
In Access, I would have a form that would have the returned data and I would reference that information throughout the application by using the 'forms!frmName!txtValue' to populate forms, reports, and fields that would capture the user that created the record. What is the best practice for this?Next when the login credentials are correct then I need another form to open, which is my MDI form, if not correct then msgbox to try again.
