Forms :: Turn Off / Find All - Step Around Default Instances

Aug 20, 2010

I'm using Visual Studio 2008 writing a Windows Forms project and I'd like to know a way to step around 'default instances' of forms. I don't like default instances, they constantly get in my way, and working in a team it's causing some really annoying confusion about the object identity of which form is actual in focus at this moment. This means I need to go threw the entire project (big) and remove ALL references to any 'default instance' of a form. But this is difficult to do as there's no errors or anything, it basically requires me to search for every text of "MyFormType." and then checking if it's accessing a default instance and fix it like that.

It'd be nice if I could just turn it off or something so I could
1) easily find all erroneous lines of code
2) avoid the accidental use of it in the future by anyone on the team

Default Instances For Forms, Different .Net Versions And Project Templates?

Jan 11, 2011

I believe one or more versions of VB.Net did away with "default instances" for Forms.

1) Was it in the 2003 or 2005 version(s)?

2) With the more recent 2008 and 2010 verions, is it possible to use a template or

change one of the files in the project so that default Form instances are not created?

I was recently looking at some of the other .Vb files in VB.Net 2008 Express Edition.

By the way, just so you know I could install a full version of Visual Studio if need be from;

2203, 2005, 2008 or 2010

AxMediaPlayer Step Function Doesn't Step Backwards

Nov 10, 2011

I have a program that plays a video and uses the step function to move frame by frame backwards and forwards through the video. The forward frame works just fine:

AxWindowsMediaPlayer1.Ctlcontrols.step(1)

However, the backwards step (below) jumps a full second backwards while the forwards step only steps .033 seconds forward (presumably a single frame).

AxWindowsMediaPlayer1.Ctlcontrols.step(-1)

I can't find any documentation about this problem online and in fact I can't find much mention of this function.the documentation does say the -1 command should step back one frame. IWMPControls2::step method Is this a known bug or is there an updated function I should be using?

Find All Instances Of A Letter If It Appeared Multiple Times In A Word?

Apr 19, 2011

How would I find all instances of a letter if it appeared multiple times in a word? For example if I had the word 'mississippi', how would I find every 's' or every 'i' or every 'p'?

I know how to use the string.IndexOfMethod() so I was thinking I could find the first letter, mark that position, and search again from there. Then I would keep looping until the end of the letter. But I'm not sure how to signal the end of the loop.

I enforced this behavior by disabling/enabling "Next" button, but I really do not like this solution, since it seems not really elegant or safe here. What is the good approach on building step-by-step processes with enforcing step completion.

Good Day. Kinda banging my head against the wall on this one. I have a Mdi application with the start form(mdiparent) and form1(mdichild). On the start form, there is a textbox and a button. Heres how I want it to work:

1. value is entered into textbox and button is clicked

2. if form1 is open with that value, Bring it to the front if not, create a new instance of form1

If Not IsNothing(frmForm) Then 'If it is something
If Not frmForm.IsDisposed Then 'it's not disposed
'loop through the open form1s and compare the form1s property to the startform textbox
'if its the same, bring the form1 to the front

Multithread Approach - How To Create Instances Of Forms

Jan 21, 2010

I have a program with 3 forms; each has a different role behind them. Form 1 loads when the program executes and the other 2 load by clicking on buttons from form 1. I would like to implement a multithreaded approach where even after clicking on form2 and form 3 I can still execute other form 1 options while form2 and form 3 contents execute. I read through some tutorials and still not to sure how to implement. I figured I need to create instances of the forms 2 and 3 but how to call the threads and control them? I did try a simple one and had some error concerning delegates.

Why VB Code Is Not Executed Step By Step By Using F11

Jun 13, 2011

When I started to work on this new project in vb.net 2010, I put many breakpoints to try to understand the execution order of the project, only to find it in vain. Step into command F11 should work correctly according to Visual Studio 2010: Step Into Property/Function(F11) doesn't work as expected. But I when I pressed F11, I found the code is jumping from one place to another based on breakpoints, not line by line or step by step.To give an example, please see the code below

Me.tcData.Alignment = TabStrip.TabControl.TabAlignment.Bottom 'line 1-breakpoint
Me.tcData.Dock = System.Windows.Forms.DockStyle.Fill 'line 2
...
Me.tcData.TabsDirection = TabStrip.TabControl.FlowDirection.LeftToRight 'line 3

[code]....

When I press F11 at line 1, it goes to the property 1. After it returns, when I press F11,it goes to property 3 directly, without accessing the code in line 2 and line 3.I do not understand why the code is NOT executed step by step by using F11. If I put breakpoingts in line 2, then line 2 is executed.So it seems to me that the showed execution order is based on breakpoints! So if I put breakpoints at different places, the showed execution order would be different! Thus, it is impossible for me to really understand the execution order.

Switching Between Windows Forms A Few Unclear Instances [VB2010]

Sep 27, 2010

I am making a visual basic game. And in the game I have a few instances where I want to call open a window (let's save to save the user's preferences) from a form, then I want to go from that form to another one.

Example:

The user has completed the new game page. I have the users choices in a host of string, integer, and boolean variables. Now I want to use a generic saving screen I made with a progress bar. When I open up the saving box, I want to close or hide the new game setup menu (whichever I need to do). Then when it is done saving I want the Saving bar to return and cause the new game form to open the actual game form and close itself.

So I guess my question is this: What is a reliable(or correct) way to poll for a return in form to signal it to go ahead with execution?

Second:

This is similar to the first question. Instead of keeping the first form open when I use the saving form; is there a way I can save the name of a page I want the saving bar to go to once it's done?

I want the user to enter their prefered username before they start a new game for the first time. So I poll the saved username setting I have and if it equals "username" I want the Username entry form I made to pop up, but once it's done I want it to immediately call the new game screen. I also want to use this username entry form on the options screen so that the user can change their accepted name at anytime; but I want this screen to return back to the options screen.

What is the accept way to do this? Is it done through stacks? (form information -> stack : load new page : Do stuff: load stack value -> goto)

Finally:

Do I have to keep a window open (not close it) to access the variables that I have defined in it, and have stored values too? Does this apply to hiding too?

Turn Off And Turn On Background Music In Program

Feb 17, 2012

Right now I can add background music in my program by using this code

My.Computer.Audio.Play(My.Resources.Music_3, AudioPlayMode.Background)

I can also turn it off and change the music by using this code

My.Computer.Audio.Stop()
My.Computer.Audio.Play(My.Resources.Another_Music, AudioPlayMode.BackgroundLoop)

Is it possible to pause the music then if I resume the music it will just continue the flow? I mean if I pause the background music in 33 seconds and the music has 50 seconds and I resume it will just continue playing in 33,34,35 etc.. seconds?

.net - Find The Name Of The Default Resources File In C#?

Feb 1, 2011

I've created an attribute, similar to the ToolboxBitmapAttribute, that allows you to associate an Icon or Image to a class.

To associate an image, the resource file base name, a type (to find the assembly), and the name of the resource are passed to the attribute constructor. I then use the ResourceManager to get access to the resource:

Dim rm = New ResourceManager(ResourceFileBaseName, passedType.Assembly)
Dim obj = rm.GetObject(resourceName)

This is fine except that I want the option to pass just the resource name in the constructor, and omit the resource file base name. Then I would pick up the resource from the default resource file. When I say default resource file, I mean the one when you start Visual Studio, open the property pages and click the Resources tab.

The problem is, when developing in VB.Net, the base name is 'RootNamespace.Resources', and when developing in C#, the base name is 'Rootnamespace.Properties.Resources'.

Where can I programatically find the name of the default resource file?

Update

What I can do is get a list of all resource names:

t.Module.Assembly.GetManifestResourceNames

I can then look for a name that ends with Resources.resources and use that to build the resource file base name.
