Forms :: WMI WndProc Not Mixing Well?
Jul 23, 2010
I'm using the WndProc To get messages about USB flashdrives connecting and removing from the users computer. It works grand. I also use WMI queries to get the info about the flashdrives. It works as it shouold. The problem is when both of these are in the same solution. I ended up creating an extra .EXE that uses the WMI queries to get the drive info and output the info to a CSV file which my Main will parse. I tries creating a seperate class of each and i also tried to make a DLL that I import to no avail.

Can you mix vb and c# files in the same project for a class library? Is there some setting that makes it possible? I tried and none of the intellisense works quite right, although the background compiler seems to handle it well enough (aside from the fact that I, then, had 2 classes in the same namespace with the same name and it didn't complain). We're trying to convert from VB to C# but haven't finished converting all the code. I have some new code I need to write, but didn't really want to make a new project just for it

This is my first post as I don't like to ask questions without making sure I've exhausted all other means. I'm new to VB2008 and programming in general but I'm learning. I want to do several simple tasks. Doing each separately is easy but when I put them together I don't know what to do. For one thing to work all the code must be changed and everything else doesn't work.
1. Plot a graph of data from a DAQ. I can do this by using a Timer1_tick method and displaying the data on the linegraph as long as the timer is turned on. I've decided to stick with this method of acquisition. I want to acquire data for long periods of time (perhaps 3 hours) so a timer is pretty good. No problems here.
2. Apply a filter to remove noise from the plot dynamically as the data comes in so that I get a smooth curve instead of a jagged graph. I know I can do this with for loops if I'm using an array. But how do I do it since I'm using a timer? Here the problem begins.
3. Log every piece of the filtered data that the timer is getting to be exported to a CSV file. I learned how to do this with do loops but not with a timer or array. But I really need to use the timer this time.
4. Acquire statistics for the data like maximum value, minimum value, and average value dynamically as the data changes. I know how to do this with an array of data after all the data is acquired. But How do I do this with a timer while the data is still being collected?
5. Monitor the data coming in to execute an alarm (Or event, like stopping the acquisition) when the data coming in has plateaued and is constant (eg: The voltage I'm monitoring starts to become constant and becomes one constant value) - Ok I don't know anything about this.
6. Execute a mathematical operation on the data that has been acquired (post acquisition) like finding gradients and such. Basically this means "How do I now manipulate the data I have and where is this data stored?"
Here's my starting code that gathers data with a timer. How do I work from here?:
Private Sub Form1_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As
System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
Timer1.Enabled = False
[code]....

Currently im trying to write a HotKey class, however in order to intercept the messages you need to overwrite the WndProc and check for WM_HOTKEY.
Currently, im using Inherits Form inside of the class, so that it has the option of overwriding the wndproc, but along with that I get all the forms normal events when trying to handle it.
Below is my
Public Class Form1
Private Class HotKey
Inherits Form

My app is basically console based but I need a Form to run in background. Adding a form in the app works but using Form1.Show didn't work, so I used VB.NET Application.Run(New Form1) However, in Form1_Load Me.Hide didn't work. I have no idea why. It works in buttons or other components in the same form.

First let me start off by saying that I have dealt with Winsock for MANY years and am attempting to convert my project over from vb6 to VB.Net.This program was made to handle up to 70 connections at a time and constantly sending data from Server to clients and back.
There is one packet however, that reaches up to be around 177kb when sent. The sockets are set up to sent 1kb at a time.... (No other packet actually uses the whole kb). It seems that after the server sends this large packet... the client receives the data out of order. After debugging and monitoring I find that it normally happens between 3-4kb. While the first 3 are good and in order. My question is, is there a different system I should use instead of just Sockets (I have had similar problems with TCPClient) and/or can someone maybe link me to a sample project that would not have this error?

I've overriden the WndProc of the ComboBox and I am drawing my own combo box, a code snippet is below:
Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As Message)
MyBase.WndProc(m)
Select Case m.Msg
Case &HF
[Code]....
Though the old control is still being painted as my drawn combo box is just overlapping the old drawing. Is there a way to stop it drawing the default combo box?

I am currently writing a VB.net app to control an Integra AV receiver. I have success controlling it via Serial, but it also has a network port for TCP control. I can control it using CommandFusion iPhone app but am now wanting to create a windows app to control it. I have created client/server software that I use to talk from one PC to the which works well. So I am going to use the same client software to talk to the AV receiver. I can connect fine to it, I just haven't quite got the protocol right to actually control it.

Can someone who is using a 64 bit machine help me pintpoint this crash to either the VS2010 IDE itself or one of the plugins I have installed?
It's the code fragment below. When I copy & paste it into the Main() function of a new VB.Net console app on my Win7 64 bit machine, the VS IDE crashes and dies onthe spot, every time I try it.
Doing exactly the same on a 32 bit XP machine, nothing abnormal happens.
The 64 bit machine does have some IDE plug-ins installed, the biggest of which is DevExpress (the free version), so i think either one of those or the fact that the IDE is running on 64 bit must be the culprit.
This is the code. The static variable can also be made a module-level variable, with the same result.

I'm creating a base class for a button that inherits from Control as opposed to ButtonBase.
I'm using reflector to look at ButtonBase to make sure I don't overlook anything important and I'm puzzled with the contents of the WndProc method. There's checks in there for things like button up, click and capture changed, which as far as I can tell are all handled within the relevent 'On' methods of the class.

I am attempting to detect addition/removal of volume media in a Visual Studio 2005 project. I can get this to work using the WndProc message WM_DEVICECHANGE on all types of volumes except SDHC (Secure Digital High Capicity) cards. Is there another Windows Message I have to listen for? If so, what is it, and what else do I have to do?
Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As System.Windows.Forms.Message)
Dim str As String
Dim devtype As Int32

I made a Vista Aero -style form for XP, but when using it, the application won't close. The FormClosed and Disposed events fire, but not the HandleDestroyed event. I tried to get around that by handling the Disposed event and calling Me.DestroyHandle(), and it worked, but not if the user resized the form so that it caused an IndexOutOfRangeException in BlurImage().The code is attached.

I'm developing a program where I've had to add a keyboard shortcuts system. The problem is it uses a third party OCX for a part of its display, and it is catching some essential WM_KEYDOWN messages when in focus, like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc. I've tried catching the WM_KEYDOWN message through WndProc, but the message is not propagating, so I guess the keyboard messages go from the inner container to the outer one, don't they?
The WM_KEYUP messages can be caught tho, but I'd prefer to be able to catch some of those messages on the KeyDown event. I'm aware I could make some low-level hook, but I'd like to avoid this workaround. Well, if the WM_KEYDOWN message goes from the OCX to its top level container, I guess I'll have to treat those key combinations in the KeyUp event.

I am capturing a few system command messages (namely minimize/maximize/restore). Inside the WndProc override I am trying to change the form's Me.ShowInTaskbar value but it is causing weird behavior in that minimization and restoration does not occur properly. Can anyone think of a reason why changing this property would interfere with this? The reason I don't really want to post code is because duplicating the effect takes a bit of code/setup. My initial thought was that changing the property's value is somehow sending another windows message and canceling the one I am currently manipulating. I realize this is a little vague but it's a shot in the dark.

I have a large-ish solution, with C# and VB.NET projects mixed. Whenever I try to o to definitionon a class, property or method thats defined in the other language, Visual Studio just takes me to the Object Browser, which is pretty annoying. Same for debugging: I cantep into a project that's written in the other language.

I'm making an application that will change position of two characters in Word.

Program works good, it is mixing characters good, but it doesn't write text to the file. It will write text in console, but not in file. Note: Program is working only with words that are divisible by 2, but it's not a problem. Also, it does not return any error message.

We are binding most of our text boxes and dropdown boxes to a BINDING NAVIGATOR (with a DATA SOURCE of a DATA TABLE).When the BN is clicked through the text boxes all change immediately. We need to use some non-bound controls as well.First one is 4 radio buttons that when clicked will change a single value in a DATA TABLE.What would be the best method to do this? Should I track when the CURRENTCHANGED event occurs on the BINDING NAVIGATOR.I'm thinking that I could trick this by BINDING the SINGLE FIELD to a HIDDEN TEXTBOX and when that textbox CHANGED event occurs mess with the radio buttons and visa-versa.

I have a basic three form application. It doesn't seem to close after navigating through forms. If I were to open the application, and the main form is displayed. If I press the X button, the application closes fine(Goes from processes) If I were to open the application, and then navigate from the main form to another form using me.hide & form1.show, and press the red X on Form1, the application again, closes fine.

I have the requirement to create an application that has multiple front ends developed using Windows Forms, WPF, ASP and Compact Framework Mobile Forms.I would like to be able to create a series of obejct representing the business logic and have this logic accessible from the various front ends available. My first thought was to use remoting as I'd like to be able to pass the business objects back and forth between client and server but the compact framework doesn't support remoting and also transferring a full framework business object to a compact framework business object doesn't seem possible. My next thought was to use web services but again the passing of business objects seems to be very hard to accomplish. Without doing this I would have to create individual web methods for each business operation.
Finally my next option is to use sockets and write the whole client/server logic within some classes and expose them to the UI/Business layer. My only problem with this is it is not scaleable should the number of clients increase dramatically whereas using remoting or web services I can host the solution via ASP.Net.Does anybody have an ideas on the best way forward for this or even have any input on how they would write an application that required a windows form, wpf, asp website and mobile device GUI all of which want to use the same business logic?

We have an application that has a main form with a map on it. Right now the paradigm is to have forms that are displayed using menu items to display information to the user. Most of these forms are modal forms, but a couple are non-modal forms that interact with the map. For some of the forms, it really would make for a better user experience if we could dock them in the main form of the app and allow the user to see both the form and the map. For instance. We could have a list of map features in a docked window, and select one of the items on the list and have the map zoom to that feature. Or do the reverse: let the users select a map item and have a docked window that shows details of the feature. Sounds great, but I wonder about what sort of gotchas we may encounter. In particular, what if we have two windows docked at the same time? Could we get tangled up in our event code?
