Assuming that I am going to add new record. I use this function to generate the ID for the new record.

It returns 1. How can I modify this to make it 20120001 wherein the first 4 number (2012) will depends on the year today.

I am exporting a sql data table to excel using VB 2008. The export works fine but when I open the excel spreadsheet and click on individual cells, I see an apostrophe at the beginning of the string. Is there a way to keep this from happening in the export?

I'm working on a project that employs a masked text box with a mask ####. When I run the code it pulls the value from the textbox then clears it. When I try to type in it again the first character is added before the mask. (ex. 1#### instead of ####) I've figured out that pressing backspace before trying to enter numbers again resolves this issue. Is there a way to send the backspace function rather than the chrs(8) like SendKeys.Send(Keys.Back) does?

why the xmlwirter writes an extra "?" at the begining of the xml. [code] And this is the output. Note the red "?" at the beginning of the xml. Upon close examination, it's a Chr(239) but in console application, it is shown as the "?" [code]

Some printers aren't actually printers e.g. CutePDF, PDF995 etc are printer drivers that "print" PDF files, and the built in fax support for Windows is through a printer driver that "prints" to the fax modem.
Both PDF and fax need a little bit more information than a normal print job - PDF needs a filename, Fax needs a phone number. Usually there is a pop-up dialog that prompts the user for the extra information.
Is there any way to set this information programmatically?
There is a property Printing.PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrintFileName but this only seems to work when Printing.PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.PrintToFile is set to TRUE, which is not the case in these situations (even though a PDF printer writes a file, it is not "save print job to file" in the normal sense).

I need to generate a lot of random 2 character strings for my application. it's a VB console application. basically what I have tried for random strings is this:

I can generate INDDMMYY using following code: lblNoSiri.Text = "IN" + Date.Now.ToString("ddMMyy") However, I don't know how to generate the last six digit number. I once posted a question on generating a policy number by table ID and user selctions from comboboxes. [URL]FYI . I am doing my project in vb, that why i posted it here. I managed to do that when i choose a region and product from two different comboboxes i generate a number but now my problem is that whenever i click on the comboboxes a policy number is generated before i save the record, so if my previous nummber was 72100002 whenever i click on the product combobox i generate a number e.g if i click on it five times by the time i save the number would be 72100007. I am using a stored procedure for this. Is there another way of doing this or i might end up with my first record as 72100001 and my second record 72100006.

I have an application that is made for a game that you have to draw cards for. So what I have done is created a random number generator that generates a random number and then using case statements that number is associated with a picture of the card, which is displayed in a picture box. This part works fine. Each time I draw a card it is not reshuffled so I need to store the random number generated and then if that number is generated again ignore it an generate a new number.
Now to complicate matters even further when a certain card is drawn the entire deck is reshuffled and everything starts over again. Here is what I tried... I tried using arrays to store the numbers but I cannot seem to get it to search the array for the number or store the number properly within the array. The array has to be dynamic since the game is expandable and I will be adding more cards to the game in the future.
