Feb 18, 2009I am putting together a kind of "build your own report" page that will have up to 20 options for people to select.Each option, selected by checkbox or dropdown (probably) will add on to the SQL data source to pull only the information needed and display it in a gridview.For instance, the initial query is:

How can I do this, preferably referring to the column using the column name of "My Position" and not a numeric...If this can NOT be done....The other option is to query everything and format it - and then hide columns in the gridview based on items that are not checked. Would this be easier? (Doesn't sound as efficient to me).

Apr 9, 2009I have encountered a wierd problem, and I'm unsure if this behaviour is caused by my code or by Windows itself... I can't make any sense of it! Basically, I have written an automated backup system for a text editor. It should save up to 5 backups for each filename, each in a 'AutoBackup<filename><filename>_<number>.bak' format. Here, <filename> is simply the name of the file my program is backing up, and <number> is the first 'free' number. So if the backups are "Test_1, Test_2, Test_4, Test_5", the next backup will be called "Test_3" (since 3 was 'missing'). When there are more than 5 backups, I want my code to delete the oldest files until there are again 5 backups left. I am using the following code for this:

Then, after another backup, Test_1.bak is again deleted!I thought this was pretty weird so I had a look at the files in windows explorer, taking a good notice of the creation date... That's when I saw that after Test_1.bak is created a second time (after a file named Test_1.bak was deleted), it carries the same creation date/time as the old (deleted) Test_1.bak..So my code still sees it as the oldest file (while it is actually the newest) and deletes it...

I'm updating an old VB net application and trying to refactor some of the logic as I go. The app looks for data from a single date across a few tables and writes that view to a file.
Writing the query in SQL I'd get the equivalent of
SELECT * FROM table
WHERE CAST(FLOOR(CAST(table.date AS float))AS datetime) = '15-Jul-2010'
Ideally I'd use
SELECT * FROM table WHERE date=@input
and add a date object as a parameter to a System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand instance
Are those two comparable? Will I get the results I expect?

Jan 12, 2010I am using VB 2008 and want to record a start date and time and then the stop date and time in a rich text box, i can get the start time into the box but so far can only stop the time instead of 2 seperate times, what i have is a drop down box with a list of computers 1-10 i was trying to get it so you picked a certain computer and that went into the text box then you started the timer and that was recorded, finally you stopped the timer and that was recorded but as i am a total newbie it does not work

I'm currently sorting this table by the filename (by using a dataview), which isn't that helpful, and I want the gridview of files sorted by the file created or file modified date (as recorded in Windows). If that's not possible, a second option would be to extract the date from the file name string (no problem doing that), and sort the dataview/datatable or gridview based on that.

Mar 28, 2011I'm building an application in which a certain CSV schedule is read and searched for time and date values.
I want to read each cell in the CSV file with a streamreader and have VB determine if the contents of the cell represent a date (like 31-10-2011), a time (like 22:30) or random text data which is not formatted like a date or time.
How can I make VB recognize a string as either a date, a time or neither one, so I can use this string formatted as Date, Time or discard of it?
The contents of the CSV file will look something like this:
;Schedulename;text;text;31-10-2011;text;text;6-11-2011;text;;;text
Although the CSV file will never contain much data, the position of the date and time fields in a row may vary, so I cannot tell VB which cell to read as date/time. It has to recognize the value as date, time, or unusable text.

C# - Convert A Date And Time To UTC Time Based On The Time Zone Of The User?
Sep 6, 2009I have an ASP.NET application with a SQL Server back end. I am storing all my dates in UTC format and doing the appropriate conversions to the local time zone of the browser viewing it. One of the pages asks for a start date and end date (no times).
I am taking the start date and setting the time to 00:00:00 hours (midnight) and I'm taking the End time and adding a time of 23:59:59, so that the date range covers the whole day. Now what I'm trying to do is do a SQL query to do a search for records in this date range. The problem is, the data in SQL is in UTC time and the user is typing their dates and times in their local date and times. My quickest solution was to convert the date and time to UTC, then search the records. However, by doing this, I am to believe ASP.NET converts the given time and date to UTC based on the server time zone. How can I convert a date and time to UTC time based on the time zone of the user?

Jun 3, 2011My current program is reading a XML doc and using it then moving it to a different directory to be archived once it is finished using the xml.
I want to be able (upon completion) move and rename the file to a new folder, I want the folder to be the current date/time as well.
So basically have 4/4/2011 9:56AM.xml in the folder 4/4/2011 9:56AM.
getting the function DateTime.Now in a format that can be saved. Folders and files cannot contain the " / " or " : "
A more Sql server type of date would be fine like 24-Jun-89 13:32:22 but I don't know how to get something like that.

Asp.net - Format A Varchar In A Gridview In Military Time To Standard Time
Apr 19, 2012There is a varchar column in the database table in this format of military time 1230 or 1750 or 1320 and that field get populated into a gridview in asp. I need to convert that string to standard time. I have tried the DateFormatString and nothing seems to work.

Jun 4, 2009I have a Gridview that I create a dynamic footer wired up to the RowDataBound event.
However there is a 50/50 chance that 3 of the columns will have no data.
I want to be able to dynamically hide the columns with no data if possible.
I have tried doing this in the RowDatabound event by checking if the value is = 0 but that does not work because I think the event is called to early?
Is there anyway to refer to the values in the Footer row after ALL the data has been bound?

Convert Excel Date To Sql Server Date Time Format Using ACE Provider?
Jun 24, 2011I am attempting to import data in a batch from an Excel Worksheet to a Sql Server database. Everything works except for the one date field in the spreadsheet. The date returned is off by four years from the value in the spreadsheet. Example: The Excel sheet has a date 10/24/2010 14:18, but when I look at the column in my query, the date is 10/23/2006 2:18. This pattern, 4 years and 1 day earlier, is repeated for every row in the worksheet.
The Excel column comes to me as a custom type, formatted m/d/yyyy h:mm. I receive this from an outside vendor and having them change the column is not going to be my simplest solution.
For what it's worth, the relevent part of the query is:

Apr 7, 2011The problem that I'm having is that when I try to select a different date, the text doesn't go away. That may make no sence, but let me tell y'all what I've done.
1: Created a GroupBox
2: Put a DateTimePicker in the GroupBox
3: Put TextBoxs in the GroupBox
4: Changed the DateTimePicker to look like this:
A)Checked - False
B)Allow Drop - True
I thought that if I changed that, then the text in the text box would go to that specific date. It didn't do that, it just stays the same. What I'm trying to do is enter text in say 3/7/11 and when I choose date 6/12/12 it will display blank text boxes for me to enter something different.

At present I have in Australia a time difference of 18 hours, so I have a list box with -24 to +24 and currently set at 18, my code is elementary as long as I have moved past day one of the month it suits me personally, but I want to distribute my app, so I need something better.
