How To Get Path From Environment.GetCommandLineArgs
Oct 14, 2010
I have a form, and essentially, I want to open the .txt file when it is dropped on my program, in textbox2 in form1. I read you use Environment. GetCommandLineArgs(), but how exactly would you do it?

I've seen sample vb project. It's a console application. There's a code there like Dim q() As String = Environment.GetCommandLineArgs()
First I try to check it by using message box to print it out: the index-0 of q contain a path project vshost --> q(0)="D:TestServicesample1.vshost.exe" and the index-1 of q contain a xml file --> q(1)="Setting.xml"
The thing I really confuse is, from where the Environment.GetCommandLineArgs() get that both q(0) and q(1)?
I've tried to search both and can't found any code which is contain the path to load it, then I try to delete the all complied files in debug folder and then rebuild it, the strange thing happen, I mean the "Setting xml" file automatically created and appear again although it doesn't has the same contain as it has first which is remain only. The original contain of the Setting.xml is some IP and database name. Is there any setting which can make the vb.net create the Setting.xml? Because I don't find either the code for creating this Setting.xml or the tool bar for set it.

Environment.GetCommandLineArgs() splits string with spaces in it sometimes but not others, want to avoid this.

P.S. This was a VB6 command line app that I just converted to VB.net & the behaviour only occurs in the VB.net version. It's being called in many places at the moment, so don't really want to have to manually go through all calls & add double quotes around the whole argument.

Problem drawing dotted path lines, with even dots along the path line.I want to draw a path line that can be any shape (square, round, outline etc), and along this path line I want even dots to appear.
I also want to be able to resize the shape (as in the example attached)This is very easy to do using "DrawPath" and defining points for the path and using a pen defined as dots.The problem I have is I want the dots to be evenly placed along the path, on any shape or size I draw.In the example I have created, I create a square with 4 points and draw a dotted path.There are 2 buttons that allows me to resize the square (larger or smaller) this helps show the problem more clearly.
The path starts at the top left corner and finishes back at the top left corner, the dots are evenly placed along the path, except the final dots at the end of the path. (Sometimes the dots are even and other times they are not even).The shapes I want to draw can be any size and any shape, but I have used a square in this example to show the problem I have. point me in the direction I need to go that allows me to draw the dots and give the impression that they are even all along the path, for all shapes and sizes.
In the pictures below if you change the size of the shape, one will have even looking dots, the other will not.

I am trying to read and display a file using MapPath as follows :
Response.ContentType = "Application/pdf"
Dim FilePath As String = MapPath("../Document/123.pdf")
Response.WriteFile(FilePath)
Response.End()
This procedure will work fine and display in the browser. However, if I save the file to C:Document123.pdf, how can I access this file using relative path in MapPath function. Is there an option to access the file which is saved out of IIS server? I am using vb.net 2003.

I'm using acrobat that returns unix paths instead of windows path's. So im wondering if there is a way in vb.net to convert the path to windows path.
i tried using:
docs(i) = javaScriptObj.path().ToString.Replace("/", "").Substring(1)
position = docs(i).IndexOf("")
docs(i) = docs(i).Substring(0, position) + ":" + docs(i).Substring(position + 1)
this only works on local files, but fails when im starting to use network drives.

Well now i have an issue which is pointing in the use of "path's" physical and network.I have a SQL server on a Server machine and i have a desktop machine used as client.I'm runing from my client machine a stored procedure in order to add a streaming data base.But also before i run this procedure i run another one which prepare the desired "path", this procedure takes:
myPath="\ServerSharedFolderSQL
in order to run the first procedure i have to turn myPath in each physical name:
myPath="DriveLetter:PublicWorkFilesSQL"
Now my Issue is how i will have the physical path, which is build it on the server and which it's from very difficult (to imposible) to know it? Basically i need a function which will return me the physical path, which the implementation it's not knowing to me. My developing environment is vb.net 2010?

I thought the %AppData% should find the relative path. When I go 'Start|Run|%AppData% windows explorer takes me to that directory. I can not put the full path in, as the user is different on each client machine.

We have a couple of applications at work that need a reference to the license server set in the User Variables under the Enviroment Variables on the windows xp client machines(system properties, Advanced, Enviroment Variables). The problem is that both applications needs a reference to the same variable name and you can't have two with the same name. What i intend to do is to create a simple windows application with a button for each application that deletes the variable item present, adds a new variable item with the value needed for that application to be able to run and then run the application itself. This is just a temporary fix until we get a more permanent solution. The 'GetEnvironmentVariable' class in vb is not able to add or delete a item, maybe the WIN32 API could do the job.

I was trying to learn how to do openGL within a VB .NET environment and it seems that the Tao framework or OpenTK is recommended with OpenTK having a higher recommendation so that is what I chose to try using. Since I am brand new to this, I am trying to just draw a simple box, triangle, or anything really so that I can understand it all before making more complex things. I have been unsuccessful at this so far so I will list in order what I have done so far and hopefully someone here can help me correct it or provide a new example just so I can draw a simple shape.
1) I installed OpenTK using opentk-2010-10-06.exe
2) In a new project I added the references to OpenTK.dll and OpenTK.Compatibility.dll
3) I added the control (opentk.glcontrol.dll)
4) I added the actual control to my form.Using some examples online I added the rest:
5) I wrote my references in:
Imports OpenTK
Imports OpenTK.GLControl
Imports OpenTK.Platform
[code]....
The above results in no display?

Is one able to compile VB 6 code in Visual Studio.NET ? In other words, is it backwards compatible with older VB code?Since I know there is a difference between managed code (.NET) and unmanaged code, I am wondering if Visual Studio.NET is able to compile unmanaged code as well?

Ok, I am needing to capture the username of the user who is logged into a third party software (similar to citrix) which then will launch compiled vb.net applications from the 'Cloud'. If the user logs into their windows active directory machine as Smith123, and then logs into this third party software as SmithS, and launch a compiled program which runs on the remote server, and executes a button that displays the environment .username results, what will return? Smith123 or SmithS?
I am trying to figure this out, and I would just create a program and try it out myself but going through all of the hoops, bells and whistles of where I work just to get a simple compiled piece of code up on the server can be a pain sometimes..
