Make The .svc.cs Or .svc.vb File Visible In Solution Explorer For A WCF Project?

Mar 3, 2012

I have a solution that contains a WCF service project. In Solution Explorer only the MyService.svc file is shown, but on double clicking it the MyService.svc.vb file opens for editing. That is OK, but Visual HG (based on Mercurial) now doesn't show that the MyService.svc.vb file has changed and I cannot commit any changes without browsing to the Tortoise HG workbench. This is a possible cause for errors when merging code. So, how do I make the MyService.svc.vb file appear in Solution Explorer?

EDIT: The problem seems to be limited to VB WCF projects. In C# there is an arrow before the .svc file that will show the svc.cs file when clicked. Bug?

VS 2008 - Timer - Project A References Project B So Can Open A Large Form In Project B

May 5, 2010

For reasons that are beyond my control, I have three Projects. Projects A and B reference project C. Project A references project B so that it can open a large form in project B. I now need to open that large form from project C, but VB won't allow me to add a reference from C to B because that would create a circular dependency. I found a way around it, though. I created a Timer in A, and when I opened C from A, I passed in that timer. When the user performs a certain action, I enable the Timer from A, and this causes C to open B for me.

Adding References To A Project

Jan 19, 2011

Over and over i keep getting stuck on the idea of adding references to a project. I was looking about visual studios 2010, i clicked the project menu tab, and then scrolled to add reference. When i would click on it, it would bring up a large list to choose from. So, my issue is as follows. I am told to reference via my compile error message a few items. I thought i found the elements i was looking for and pressed OK. When i would try to run, it would still give me the errors.

What am i doing wrong? Am i not doing something correct?

here is my error code, and i looked it up, but for some reason, as stated above, i must not be referencing correctly?

Deploying A Project With Web References

Oct 26, 2011

I have a project that uses web references to make SOAP calls to several web services. When I'm working locally, the services are hosted on my local machine, so the URL of each web service is something like [URL]. When I deploy the project to a server, the URL needs to change to the production URL. Currently I am accomplishing this with a prebuild event that does a find-and-replace on each URL and overwrites it with the deployment URL before deploying. Surely there is a better way.

Compiler Conditions And Project References?

Jun 15, 2009

I've recently started running into DotNET difficulties with newer HP and Dell systems that are pushing x64 processors and operating systems onto a totally unaware end-user market, so suddenly a lot of work I've done in VB.NET is going to ____ in a handcart; specifically all the work I've done with 3rd Party tools that are only available in x86 or x64 builds and not DotNET Native builds for any CPU. The biggest problem is that all the DLL File Names, in-code Namespaces, Classes, and Methods are totally identical - just one version is compiled for 32 bit and one for 64. What I need to do to fix this is provide some #If compile conditions that alter the paths of existing references based on the Build Configuration, so that when I'm compiling for the x86 platform it references C:DBAPISQLitex86System.Data.SQLite.DLL but when compiling for x64 it references C:DBAPISQLitex64System.Data.SQLite.DLL.

I don't have a problem writing compile conditions, but can't figure out how to alter the reference paths before the compile begins, short of manually removing one reference and adding the other every single time I need to do a dual-platform compile.

Visual Studio 2010 VB Windows Forms Application - Organization Of DLL Project References?

Mar 26, 2012

In my VS2010 VB project I have a lot of external references to DLLs, to the point that organization has become a major headache and I'm wondering if I am going about it the wrong way. My assembly references include common redistributables (SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1, ReportViewer 2010 SP1, DataVisualization, as well as some useful 3rd party dlls from CodeProject and CodePlex.

Currently, I am copying each DLL into a 1st level folder (/dll_lib) under my named project folder (under the solution folder), and adding the reference from that path. However, I see that Visual Studio copies the DLLs to various other locations (/bin/debug or /bin/release) in my project when I build the project or solution, and some of the 3rd party DLLs come with instructions to copy them manually to /bin.

What is the "best practice" for where to put the DLLs? Can I just put all of them under /bin and let the build event copy to /bin/debug or /bin/release as required? Should I try to force a single reference path for the dlls in the project output?

Updating Project Resources In Windows Explorer?

Jan 24, 2012

If I have some resources added to a project, such as images or sounds, they are placed in Resources folder. Say I created a new image file with the same name and want to replace the one I added earlier.

Do I have to do this via Projects Properties Resources tab by removing the old one and adding the new one? Or can I simply copy and paste the new file in Windows Explorer into the Resources folder (replacing the old one)? Would it break the project? Does it matter if the project is currently open in Visual Studio?

Datasource Window - Make The Data Sources In One Project Visible To The Others

May 16, 2009

I am running VS2008 and am using VB2008. I have created a solution file with a Windows Form Project. It contains one form. I created a class project called DataAccess. I selected that project and created a data source. Now I see the XSD for that data. If display the "Data Sources" window I see the datasource. So far so good. If I select the Windows Form project, and then display the "Data Sources" window I get an empty window with a "Add New Data Source" button/link. How do I make the data sources created in the second project available to the first one?

I have been watching the videos for creating n-tier apps that suggest adding a third project to the solution called DataEntities. I did that. I then click on the XSD in my DataAccess project. Then in the properties of the XSD I change the "DataSet Project" property to point to my new DataEntities project. When I save the DataAccess project the DataEntities project gets a file added to it as expected. But then the Data Sources window is empty no matter which of the three projects I select.

Clearly I am doing something wrong. The videos all show the ability to see the data source in the "Data Sources" window after setting up this three project structure. One other thing I noted. In most of the pictures in articles showing the Data Sources window. The top most entity in the window is the project file itself. Then in a tree structure you would see the various data sources under that top most entity. When I was able to see something in the data sources window, the top most entity was a data source NOT the project file, with the data sources under it.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? It seems like I need to do SOMETHING to make the data sources in one project visible to the others. And possibly something to make a datasource visible once split apart using the "Dataset Project" property.

VS 2010 Add File AS LINK To An Project?

Aug 29, 2010

I was able to add a file as-link to an project, as you can see in the image:see the difference in the icon for files added as-link and files added as"normal"but now don't remember how to add a file as link, or if this was because some add-in.I've vs2010 installed in both desktop and laptop, the same of a few coworkers, and I like to have several general file (used as links) in different folders as the project folders.

anyway don't sure of as-link or normal are important in an project.the only difference I've noted is that link files can't be edited when in debug.basically I'm thinking in add as-link the files that are shared/used in several projects, as general modules or classes that have functions or subs intended to be as shared.

IDE :: Windows Forms Classes Appear As Class Modules Not Form Modules In Project Explorer

Jan 7, 2011

Yesterday I opened Visual Studio (2008 v 9.0.30729.1) and all the winform classes in my project display with class module icons with the little 'VB', instead of form module icons with the little form icon!

When I double click on a form module, the form designer doesn't open, just the code module.

When I run the project, it runs fine. There are no errors. The project builds fine.

I did Project --> show all files, and I can see the designer and resx files below the form module which doesn't look or act like a form module.

I can't open my forms to design them!

Jumping Between Forms - Making A Form Visible And Not Visible

Jul 17, 2009

I'm having an odd problem when making a form visible and not visible and it not continuing to function. Here is what I have happening. I have a main form (frmMain) that is an MDIParent. On this form I have a menu to open a second form (frmCalculate) and populate a listview from Items in the database.

As I click or select items in the listview on frmCalculate the tag is read and data is pulled based on the id stored in that tag and fills in various fields on the form. This works great. However, I also have a context menu attached to the listview that allows me to perform a "what if" scenerio on the items I am calculating. When I select this menu, I hide the frmCalculate and open the frmWhatIf form where I can mess around with values on the item I had hilighted in the listview on frmCalculate. Nothing is pulled from or written back to the database here, all the information is filled in from fields on frmCalculate. It just allows me to look at rising costs and how they will affect my margins.... anyway.

If I then close frmWhatIf, it brings my frmCalculate back by setting its visible propery to true (never closed frmCalculate, just hid it). At this point if I click an item in the listview I get an exception for a null reference. IF however I never hide frmCalculate, I can open and close frmWhatIF without ever having an issue. Why do I lose the functionality to select items just by hiding and unhiding the form? As a test I added two menus to the toolbar on frmMain one called hide and one called show. I then opened frmCalculate with original menu item to populate the listview and selected a few items to test that it was working and then using the hide menu I made the form invisible and the show button to bring it back. This yielded the same exception so without even opening frmWhatIf the problem still occurs.
