Import Txt Or Csv Files To Access Using ODBC?
Apr 5, 2009
I'm looking for a solution to import or link logs (csv and txt files) to Access using ODBC. These files are in a directory and I would like to link each of them to a table in Access to analyze their content. I'd like to use ODBC rather than the Access' Import Wizard because I want to keep the possibility to change the format and/or delimiters of my files if necessary.I settled an ODBC Driver "Microsoft Access Text Driver" but when I try to open the connection in Access, I get the error "You cannot use ODBC to import from, export to or link an external Microsoft Office Access or ISAM database table to your database".This connexion works perfectly in Excel and enable me to get the data in an excel spreadsheet. I'd like to do the same from Access to use Access' functionalities!

It's apparent I have no idea what I am doing anymore, therefore I'm turning to experts. I would like to 2 things.
1) Make an ODBC connection to our datasource and display it in a Datagrid (table)
2) Make an ODBC connection to a DataSource and Copy several tables to an MDB file. Basically the same thing I accomplish by using the Import Function in Access. Just automated and with some additional items.[code]
In trying to answer the first part of my 2 part question, this is as far as I get. I can't seem to loop through the ODBC connection and assign it to a Datagrid.I usually get an Transoft Error about the Query - or more often I receive ERROR [IM001][Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver does not support this function.[code]

I am trying to do something fairly simple.. allow my user to import thier data from Excel into SQL Server, where it can be used by the application.To do this, I'm using the fairly simple code that is common everywhere I look:
strFilePath = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + fdlgFileOpen.FileName + ";Extended Properties=Excel 8.0"
connExcel = New OleDbConnection(strFilePath)
connExcel.Open()
[Code]...
Now, on my development computer this code works perfectly. The data imports, and I can go on my merry way.
On the TEST computer, this code throws the error: "ODBC -- Connection to {SQL Server} servernamesqlservername failed." This seems very odd to me, because I'm using exactly the same SQL Server and database to interact with the application, and all the other screens in the application work perfectly. The test computer CAN connect to this SQL Server, but it keeps throwing this error whenever I try import data from Excel.I've tried everything I can think of - using the server's IP address instead of the server name, sending the SQL Server administrator data along with the request, taking out the Trusted_Connection=Yes... nothing works. What is going on here? How can this code work fine on my computer, and hiccup on another?

I have a small vb.net application that fires a crystal report through crystal viewer.
The report uses an ODBC connection provided by 32-bit software accounts package, which is installed in the ODBC 32-bit This all works fine on 32-bit XP and 32-bit Win7 with no problems, When run on a win7 64-bit machine the application launches ok, but when it comes to running the report, it prompts for a database logon box for the odbc connection.
When the report is run seperate on its own, on the exact same pc through crystal reports desginer it runs fine, Its almost like the application is not picking the 32-bit ODBC set up is it the case that the connection needs to be coded rather than using the report connection,

I have developed a small ms-access based software with vb.net.
I've added auto-update capabilities to the software (mostly by using clickonce) to simplify the release of new features.
Every version of the software executes the update routine which may update also the existing database.Lately i've made few changes on the database structure adding few stored queries, so i want the autoupdate code to programmatically add these new queries to the existing database and make it perfectly up to date.
I haven't already found a solution to add stored queries to an ms-access database using odbc...I also tried to use the "CREATE PROC" sql statement but it does not seem to work with access databases, even if i create the query form the Microsoft Office Access front-end.I've found some examples that uses ADODB, but i'm using odbc to remain both x86 and x64 compliant.

I'm using Visual Basic/Studio 2010 Express to run my VB program using MS Access database. I'm going to convert the Access database to a SQL Server Server Express data base so I downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Express onto my pc with Windows 7. The installation went fine and I actually converted my Access database to SQL server. I did not change anything in my VB program.My problem: When I run my normal program with the Access database (no changes), I now get an error when it executes the following code:
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader.
I get the error System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException was unhandled;
ErrorCode=-2147467259; Message=ODBC--connection to 'SQL ServerBilotta-pcsqlexpress' failed.

It appears the ODBC is looking for the SQL server eventhough the program is pointing to the MS Access db. How do I get it to NOT look for the SQL db? Is there a default setting for the

I am new to using VB.NET, I've come from developing using MS Access.
I have started a project that will load csv/txt files into SQL Server, I have a form that has a browse for file and this will then display the csv/txt file name in a text box once chosen. How is it posible to use an ADO connection send the csv/txt file into a table within my database.
Can anyone give me little help to get the basics of creating code to import the csv/txt files.

I'm using VB.NET 2005 RC and I have built a custom component which consists of a search screen, data grid, dataset etc. The whole project is designed to be imported in to any new application as a custom control which can then be programmatically changed via its methods, events etc. When I tried to import the .dll in to a new windows forms project all the extra stuff contained in my project was also magically imported (such as the dataset I had used, the SQL connection) etc.I have set these their modifier to be private but still they are imported.
What can I do so when a developer imports this custom control in to their toolbox for use, only the control is shown? Otherwise it looks a bit weird to have access to the dataset I'm using with access to the dataset I'm using within the control.

how I could go about making a simple little program in Visual Basic 2010 that has a button you click with drop down menu beside it to search for an excel or sql file on your computer and then you select it. Then you click a button saying "import into sql" or a different button saying "export to excel."
These buttons would of course do what they say... either importing the chosen excel file into sql or exporting the sql file into excel.

My application is often used to import volumes of data. The application currently supports .CSV, .XML, and XLS. The question relates to handling EXCEL files. Specifically, what are the best practices for coding?
Today, since customers are beginning to see .XLSX files coming in, I modified the code to use either JET.OLEDB.4.0 or .ACE.OLEDB.12.0 depending on whether it was reading an .XLS or an .XLSX. My instincts tell me that cannot be the correct way to go about this. First, customers still using Office 2003 are going to have to download the AccessDatabaseEngine in order to read the .XLSX files. Second, what if a customer installs Office 2010? Are they going to have the 12.0 stuff or am I now faced with another issue.

If I want to import only one file, I open access, go tο File > Get External Data.Is there a way to do this through vb, underground for number of files?If I work with dataset, should I close and dispose connection every time a file is loaded, or should I load all files and then close?
