Good Book For Learning About Interfaces / Abstraction

Feb 28, 2011

In my applications I use objects and classes, but when reading SO topics, I have the idea I don't use real OOP principles. For example, I never use inheritance or interfaces. Therefore, I am trying to learn proper OOP (in VB.NET), but I find some concepts quite hard to understand (even after reading a lot about the subjects on SO).So I'm trying to find a book or resource with good practical real-world examples. For instance, I kind of understand examples like using an interface for both Dog and Cat classes when using a EatFood method, but I find it hard to relate it to real-world cases.Ideally these books or resources should cover explanations about:

- when and why to use inheritance or interfaces or abstract classes
- when and why to use private, public, protected, virtual etc.
- best practices in dependency injection /inversion of control
- when to use aspect oriented programming
- using of constructors
- solid principles
- singletons
- encapsulation

Perhaps it's a mix of all kinds of concepts, but I think these are all related to OOP, please correct me if I'm wrong.I would prefer a book/resource with VB.NET examples, but this might be difficult?

Good Program Book For Hardware Test Engineer?

Nov 3, 2009

I am a EE graduate from about a year and a half ago working in the semiconductor industry as a hardware/test engineer. I wan't to learn VB to do lab level data test and acquisition. I am learning this in my free time at work and home, and I would be using VB to talk with different electronic equipment through GBIP to source, measure, and record data. Anyone have any good ideas of a good book for such applications?? I know there are a ton of books and courses out there, but 99.9% of that information is not going to be needed for my industry application. I also took a few C classes in college, and I have some experience with labview so I am not a total noob to programming. So if anyone has a good book, or refferences that would be really appreciated. Also what version of VB would you recomend me learning?

Can Whip Up A Program That Deals With Text Boxes, Buttons, Checkboxes

Apr 21, 2009

I can whip up a program that deals with text boxes, buttons, checkboxes, etc. fairly easily. I know how to deal with arrays and stuff like that, and I am just barely able to open/write to files (I don't quite have it down, but almost). However, when it comes to drawing graphics. Right now all I'm looking to do is create a function that will draw a pixel or really tiny rectangle at my command to use as the building block of drawing images. I saw some example code here:

Of how to have it draw a rectangle upon opening a form, and I was able to do that. But I guess I'm not quite sure how to make a function like that be performed when I do something like press a button (or just anywhere in a segment of code). It's probably because I don't understand this line:

[code...]

I understand that it makes a non-public sub called Form1_Paint, but I'm not quite sure about the arguments passed and what "Handles Me.Paint" really means. I'm not sure how to make this (if I can make it) into a function that I can call anywhere (in the button1.click code, for example) to make it display a pixel.

how I could do that? Either that, or just explain what the piece of code above is actually saying?

Looking For A Book On Hooking

Feb 16, 2010

I have been working on a project for some time now and I am stuck. I am trying to sense when a navigation software speaks so i can mute the volume of everything else on the computer.

my problem is that i cant properly sense the audio of the software. i am using windows 7 and vb.net. i have done a good amount of research, but i have not come up with an answer.

i am almost positive that i need to intercept the win32api call of the software to trigger the mute that i will use. i dont know how to do this, all the information i can find that is even close to this subject is for 98, nt and 2k.

does anyone know of any books (or websites) that contain information on this subject?

ASP.NET - Interaction With Other Websites?

Jun 30, 2010

I was wondering if it is even possible to interact with other websites using my own. Here is the scenario: Lets say I have a Lockerz account, which is a place where you do daily tasks to earn points. Once a month you can redeem those points to get prizes such as an ipod, macbook, or other items. I know that sounds rediculous, but stay with me.

For someone to gain membership to this website they must be invited by a member. So I get your email address then log in to my account, then send you an invite from there. What I want to do is create a website where a user enters their email into a textbox and presses a submit button. From there the program, behind the scenes, sends my login information, and the users email address to lockerz and sends the invite. All without ever leaving my site.I have worked with ASP.NET with VB codebehind for a while now, so I understand the basics of that. I am just wondering if what i want to do is even possible.

Reading Websites With .net?

Mar 8, 2010

I do quite a bit of copying and pasting into spreadsheets right now and then use the data with VB.net to update my databases. I have figured out how to read a website within VB.net using the following code:

[Code]...

The problem is that this reads all of the HTML tags as well. Ideally what I want to do is get rid of all of the unnecessary information such as ads and table headers, but want to preserve all of the data so that I can update my DBs with the click on a button. Is this possible? I have heard I may need to use Regular Expressions, but am confused how they'd work in my problem.

C# Book Or Resource For .Net Developers?

Feb 16, 2010

What I'm Not looking for:Now, just to be clear, i'm not looking for VB6 to C#.Net content, as i know there are a few of those out there. Also, I know about that "syntaxconversion table" website, where it compares VB.Net to C# language features in a side by side table. I am not interested in this either, already know about it.I'm also not looking for a converter, which converts C# code to VB.Net and visa versa, i know there are a few websites which do this and already have the addresses. Finally, I'm not looking for a C# book or resource that caters to current programmers, but specifically to VB.Net programmers!

What I Am looking for:To learn C# (VS2008 or preferably VS2010 version) given that i already know VB.Net 10.0 (VS2010)... as there are many things related to .NET that i won't have to learn again if i can find something that will leap me from vb.net to c#, many bits of the CLR, how .NET works etc... since the languages are the same in what they do, and what they use to do them, i don't want to have to re-learn all this again. The only difference is really the syntax, but also how the C# language differs in dealing with certain things, what default expectations/behaviours are in various scenarios etc...

The set of differences and similarities between C# and VB.Net are so unique that neither of these languages likely could share this unique set/combination of differences and similarities with any other language. So my point is, it really needs to be C# for VB Developers oriented, otherwise it'll almost cetainly be inappropriate or a re-hashing!
