Can anyone recommend a good VB book that will teach functions, file IO, arrays, recursion etc. A lot of the ones I have looked at are very basic I started Sam teach yourself VB 2010 in 24hrs but a lot of it didn't relate to what we do in college.
In my applications I use objects and classes, but when reading SO topics, I have the idea I don't use real OOP principles. For example, I never use inheritance or interfaces. Therefore, I am trying to learn proper OOP (in VB.NET), but I find some concepts quite hard to understand (even after reading a lot about the subjects on SO).So I'm trying to find a book or resource with good practical real-world examples. For instance, I kind of understand examples like using an interface for both Dog and Cat classes when using a EatFood method, but I find it hard to relate it to real-world cases.Ideally these books or resources should cover explanations about:
- when and why to use inheritance or interfaces or abstract classes - when and why to use private, public, protected, virtual etc. - best practices in dependency injection /inversion of control - when to use aspect oriented programming - using of constructors - solid principles - singletons - encapsulation
Perhaps it's a mix of all kinds of concepts, but I think these are all related to OOP, please correct me if I'm wrong.I would prefer a book/resource with VB.NET examples, but this might be difficult?
I am a EE graduate from about a year and a half ago working in the semiconductor industry as a hardware/test engineer. I wan't to learn VB to do lab level data test and acquisition. I am learning this in my free time at work and home, and I would be using VB to talk with different electronic equipment through GBIP to source, measure, and record data. Anyone have any good ideas of a good book for such applications?? I know there are a ton of books and courses out there, but 99.9% of that information is not going to be needed for my industry application. I also took a few C classes in college, and I have some experience with labview so I am not a total noob to programming. So if anyone has a good book, or refferences that would be really appreciated. Also what version of VB would you recomend me learning?
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good book or web site for Word and Excel Programming for VB. I'm not talking about VBA, I need to "work" with them from within my program not from within word or excel. I need to upgrade programs that were looking at Office 2000 and we're going to 07 or 10 not sure yet but figured I could at least get a bit of a jump on things.
I begain in 1971 learning TRS-80 Model III Basic language...later taught myself Lotus 1-2-3 and then DBase. Later, graduated to Visual Basic Stopped at VB 6.0. Now I need to move up to VB 2010...I have been programming for our company for sometime and use VB 6.0 as a front end for numerous Access DB applications. Can you recommend a good book (or books) out there that can help me with using VB 2010 as a frontend for Access?..just need the basics to be able to make connections, query the tables, return the data, update data, etc.
I'm new to VB but completly new. I've dabbled with it a bit before but mostly from copying and pasting code from online. Is there a good book that I can purchase that will show me the ropes of the basics?
I'm looking for an advanced level VB.NET book which covers LINQ and Lambda Expressions.Generally I read C# .NET books due to lack of good VB.NET books when it comes to generic .NET Framework related subjects. However Lambda and LINQ is quite different in C# and VB.NET I'm looking for an advanced level VB.NET book on this subjec
how to load data (Book) to text box when user just enter the book code?how to load data (student) to text box when user just enter the student id?how to write the code when user click the save button , the book quantity(Book) will reduce 1 and the all the data in textbox will save in database(Issue)the interface is like
the database is show at
the code is
Public Class frmIssue Dim dt As New DataTable() Dim rowIndex As Integer = 0 Dim rowIndex1 As Integer = 0
I can whip up a program that deals with text boxes, buttons, checkboxes, etc. fairly easily. I know how to deal with arrays and stuff like that, and I am just barely able to open/write to files (I don't quite have it down, but almost). However, when it comes to drawing graphics. Right now all I'm looking to do is create a function that will draw a pixel or really tiny rectangle at my command to use as the building block of drawing images. I saw some example code here:
Of how to have it draw a rectangle upon opening a form, and I was able to do that. But I guess I'm not quite sure how to make a function like that be performed when I do something like press a button (or just anywhere in a segment of code). It's probably because I don't understand this line:
I understand that it makes a non-public sub called Form1_Paint, but I'm not quite sure about the arguments passed and what "Handles Me.Paint" really means. I'm not sure how to make this (if I can make it) into a function that I can call anywhere (in the button1.click code, for example) to make it display a pixel.
how I could do that? Either that, or just explain what the piece of code above is actually saying?
I have written an application to perform a simple CRUD operation i've used MVC design pattern... DAL was designed using the wizard. I was able preserve the olds value of teh fields of EMployee class using a seperatemethod
in the SearchByIndex() i call the fill method and i used the data to initialize the current Employee object also i preserve those values using PreserveOldValues() the i call update() and internall i pass the preserved values......However it doesnt do concurrencies and updates..
I'm looking for a book that is pretty much A-Z for LINQ programming from Visual Basic. I am particularly interested in LINQ to SQL. I've found "Programming Microsoft LINQ in Microsoft .NET Framework 4" and while its description sounds interesting, there is no discussion on the book at all . Do any of you have any experience with this book? If so, what do you think of it?
I have been working on a project for some time now and I am stuck. I am trying to sense when a navigation software speaks so i can mute the volume of everything else on the computer.
my problem is that i cant properly sense the audio of the software. i am using windows 7 and vb.net. i have done a good amount of research, but i have not come up with an answer.
i am almost positive that i need to intercept the win32api call of the software to trigger the mute that i will use. i dont know how to do this, all the information i can find that is even close to this subject is for 98, nt and 2k.
does anyone know of any books (or websites) that contain information on this subject?
I just wonder that somone can give me propositions for some good books to learn VB.net / VB2008.. I know the basics.. So I think of not a book like for dummies.. Just something more a step forward for new things to learn.
I was wondering if it is even possible to interact with other websites using my own. Here is the scenario: Lets say I have a Lockerz account, which is a place where you do daily tasks to earn points. Once a month you can redeem those points to get prizes such as an ipod, macbook, or other items. I know that sounds rediculous, but stay with me.
For someone to gain membership to this website they must be invited by a member. So I get your email address then log in to my account, then send you an invite from there. What I want to do is create a website where a user enters their email into a textbox and presses a submit button. From there the program, behind the scenes, sends my login information, and the users email address to lockerz and sends the invite. All without ever leaving my site.I have worked with ASP.NET with VB codebehind for a while now, so I understand the basics of that. I am just wondering if what i want to do is even possible.
I do quite a bit of copying and pasting into spreadsheets right now and then use the data with VB.net to update my databases. I have figured out how to read a website within VB.net using the following code:
The problem is that this reads all of the HTML tags as well. Ideally what I want to do is get rid of all of the unnecessary information such as ads and table headers, but want to preserve all of the data so that I can update my DBs with the click on a button. Is this possible? I have heard I may need to use Regular Expressions, but am confused how they'd work in my problem.
What I'm Not looking for:Now, just to be clear, i'm not looking for VB6 to C#.Net content, as i know there are a few of those out there. Also, I know about that "syntaxconversion table" website, where it compares VB.Net to C# language features in a side by side table. I am not interested in this either, already know about it.I'm also not looking for a converter, which converts C# code to VB.Net and visa versa, i know there are a few websites which do this and already have the addresses. Finally, I'm not looking for a C# book or resource that caters to current programmers, but specifically to VB.Net programmers!
What I Am looking for:To learn C# (VS2008 or preferably VS2010 version) given that i already know VB.Net 10.0 (VS2010)... as there are many things related to .NET that i won't have to learn again if i can find something that will leap me from vb.net to c#, many bits of the CLR, how .NET works etc... since the languages are the same in what they do, and what they use to do them, i don't want to have to re-learn all this again. The only difference is really the syntax, but also how the C# language differs in dealing with certain things, what default expectations/behaviours are in various scenarios etc...
The set of differences and similarities between C# and VB.Net are so unique that neither of these languages likely could share this unique set/combination of differences and similarities with any other language. So my point is, it really needs to be C# for VB Developers oriented, otherwise it'll almost cetainly be inappropriate or a re-hashing!
The problem is in the line that contains address.save(filename) the part address.save is underlined. When I backspace over the save, it gives me the options of what can go there and save isnt one of them. I am coping this out of a book.[code]...
I just can't seem to figure out how to automatically upload a picture to myspace, facebook, any of the social sites in .NET. I always have to do it manually through my web browser control. There just isn't any code out there to help me with this process that I can find.Does anyone have an example of an automated picture upload to a social website?
I have two websites "WEBSITE 1" and "WEBSITE 2"...now i want that when someone logs in to "WEBSITE 1" he does not have to log in to "WEBSITE 2" and vice versa...ie when he/she logs in to any one of he websites and opens the other one simultaneously he/she does not have to login to the other one.For eg :- when you are logged in in gmail...you do not have to log in in youtube or orkut or google+
I wish to block websites in a browser, where the blocked websites are stored in my.settings.blockedwebs (which is a collections. specialized. stringcollection). I let the user input the blocked website into a textbox in form1, and the add website to the stringcollection button has the following code:[code]
I am looking to get a list of websiets viewed from the registry. I think the code below is fine but how do i populate a combobox with the typedurls it finds. I have tried myself but i still get blank in the combobox
Imports System Imports Microsoft.Win32 Imports System.Windows.Forms
i am making a program that you should be able to block websites with. and i want the program to block the websites that is inside a text file or something, so the user can change the website that should be blocked.
I have put together some code to login to one of my websites [code] The problem is when i display the sites source code it still shows the source of the login page, rather than the page you goto once you login
Issue: Can't find a way to utilize process.start to enable automatic login to various websites.Program: A simple window form application with a desired module/form to store user passwords and websites and launch a login from the form (a very basic "password manager" and launch) Side-issue: Data storage (Not yet explored because of inability to solve main issue) , would like to use text file to store System.Security.SecureString data-type.
Narrative: I'm really new to all of this but not lazy or unwilling to do the work. Two and-half months of no less than 14 hours per day reading and applying myself to VB language and VS IDE. Been able to solve all my own problems thus far with help of Web or my $600 library investment, and have a working app that I've been able to deploy. However, neither of these assets seems to hold answer for this problem, and unlike others I've encountered, I can't find a work-around.
Potential Answers: It seems that answers may lie within an HTML/XML/JS/AJAX get/post route, but this is an entire new area of study/research that I hope to avoid if there is indeed an answer utilizing Process.Start. There also seems to be a potential to solve my problem using ASP.NET, or using System.Windows.Browser and HTMLElementCollection (for the last I've only found snippets of code that utilize My.Settings.UserName, & My.Settings.Password, and it is unclear to me if these settings reflect the login to user machine or to actual desired site).
My Hope: (which may be forlorn) is that there is a simple explanation on how to plug a value in to the last parameter of Process. Start ---"Domain". I'm assuming Domain is not what I would normally interpret to be the root of a website, but is instead particular to user machine. I've found no good examples, other than a hint of using System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager, and statements that old VBCode made access easy.
My Assumption: I'm thinking this is another area where my newbie status has made me a believer there's a solution within my grasp before I found the answer but after I made a commitment. VS2008 fooled me in a similar manner in three other areas thus far, the PrintDialog control duped me into thinking printing was an easy process, HelpProvider control had me totlally convinced that Help installation was a snap, and OneClick deceived me into believing deployment was oh so simple.
Process.Start may be another place I've been had, but if you speak pretty good newbie Anyway, here's the small bit of code I've been playing with but without luck (Win32 exception, parameters are incorrect:)
May I expose my "small" problem? Here, i'm following a course in my University, called Introduction to Programming, there are only beginners in our class. i'm also a newbie, to say so.And some stupid students were not paying attention so he gave us a crazy assignment for Friday 30th.This is what his assignment consists in. I have created a PDF file from his requirements and some samples of Code.[url]
