Manage Frequently Called WCF Connection?

Aug 13, 2010

I have a local service and a WinForms app that communicate via WCF, but I seem to end up with a lot of copies of this code in my application:

Public Shared Sub MyLocalMethod1()
Dim tcpBinding As New NetTcpBinding
tcpBinding.SendTimeout = New TimeSpan(0, 0, 5)

[Code]....

I should probably be doing this in some kind of a helper class that creates the connection, lets my service use it, and then closes the connection, so I don't have multiple copies of this connection code. However, should I be leaving this connection open, or does it make sense to close it every time? The WinForm generally calls the service every few seconds, so it may make more sense to try and have a common copy that all these different calls can each access, instead of opening a closing a new connection each time.

DB/Reporting :: Manage Connection After Search?

Aug 8, 2009

I am trying to use RAP (rabid application development). So I have created a database with a datagridview to show all information and textboxes to modify the informations. So far so good.

The problem is created when I try to use the search facility on the datagridview. The search is working but the problem is that the textboxes are not following the search criteria . I can configure this manual but I would like to know which is the easier way to configure the textboxes to show the value of my search criteria.

I also want to know how when I finished with the search criteria and empty the search the text boxes to make the connections back as they were before.

COM Control Call From .Net Frequently Blocking For 15ms?

Nov 19, 2009

I have an ActiveX/COM control written in C++/MFC which processes video (ie. 30 frames per second => about 33ms per frame processing budget) Various rendering aspects of the control can be modified using Set calls on the control, which clients can issue at any time.It turns out that someone (Windows scheduler, .Net interop wrappers, MFC call dispatcher, memory allocator, garbage disposal ?) is quite frequently eating an incredibly long 15.625ms to make or return from the call into the control. Thats half my per-frame budget eaten by some gremlins in the runtime !

The control itself is - for historical reasons - written in C++/MFC. The problem happens when the control is called from C# as well as VB.Net. It happens on very different hardware (an HP Pavilion 2.8Ghz Pentium D, a Macbook Pro with 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Parallels VM). Just how often this mystery hiccup of 15.625ms occurs differs between machines, but when it does, it is always 15.625ms exactly. Strange.

I have made a rather minimal test case that strips out all the video processing etc.First, I created an MFC/COM Control project in the Project Wizard of Visual Studio 2003 and left things at their default settings (Apartment threading etc.). Then I added a single user defined call TestCall() to the control which does nothing (manually since there is no more classwizard)

Then I created a VB Client program which instantiates the control. It endlessly calls the TestTiming() sub which times how long a single call into the control takes and prints out that time.The TestTiming call basically just does this:

Code: startTime = DateTime.Now Dim h = AxTestControl1.TestCall() endTime = DateTime.Now Dim ms As integer = endTime.Subtract(startTime).TotalMilliseconds

I print out calls that take 0 ms (well something less than 1ms anyway) as "." and for calls > 0ms I print out the actual ms. The output looks something like this:.15.625 ms.........15.625 ms.........15.625 ms.........15.625 ms..........15.625 ms..........15.625 ms...........15.625 ms..........15.625 ms..........15.625 ms

So some variable nr of calls that execute quickly, as desired, and then a "hiccup" call that always takes the exact same amount of time (15.625ms), then some more quick calls.If instead of the user defined control function .TestCall() inside the timing I use a standard control property, like

Code:Dim h = AxTestControl1.Heightor a built in control method like
Code:Dim h = AxTestControl1.ToString()Then I never, ever get a hiccup call.

On different machines you will get a different average number of "." before a hiccup but even then the hiccup is 15.625ms I should mention that the sample code spins off a background thread and calls the TimingTest from its ThreadTask(). This is the way the bug was originally reported to me. However, I can put the

Code:Do TimingTest()Loop

right in the main UI thread - as the first thing in Form1_Load() for example. And it will exhibit the same behaviour, except there will be substantially more good=0ms="." calls on average between the inevitable hiccups.

Have A Column In The Datatable Called Amount And A Textbox Acting As The Filter Called Say Maxamount To Set It?

Feb 9, 2011

i was wondering if it possible to have a condition where lets say you have a column in the datatable called amount and a textbox acting as the filter called say maxamount to set it so the rowfilter when filtering the table will sum the number in the amount column until the number in maxamount is met, then stop and only return the rows where the total sum of the amount column is equal or less than the maxamount value, so i guess if the next row takes us over the maxamount it discards this row and returns the rows previous to it. is this possible using datagridview rowfilter or should i be loooking elsewhere to achieve this?

I have a form called FrmPracDetails which is built up with a List view called LvwColProc. Therefore when you click a field on the LvwColProc it takes you to another form called FrmColProcessing, here you can make changes to certain fields which are also present on FrmPracDetails. What I want to do is when you make changes on FrmColProcesing and Click the Save Button (which calls the Save function)the changes appear instantly on FrmPracDetails. Please note, FrmColProcessing will always be open next to FrmPracDetails. I have tried to put this code in the Save function present in FrmCol Processing as shown below, but it doesnt Refresh FrmPracDetails form. [code]

Properties - Default Property Set Being Called Mysteriously Called?

Apr 2, 2012

I have the following line of code in my program:

JCL_History.Enqueue(JCL_History(I))

This JCL_History object is basically a Generic.List encapsulated in a wrapper and has the following method:

Public Sub Enqueue(ByRef value As String)
If Members.Contains(value) Then
Me.RemoveAt(Members.IndexOf(value))

[Code].....

In my testing I have 2 items in this JCL_History list. When I call that first line of code I posted (the one that invokes Enqueue) with I = 1 I expect the first item to be shuffled to the bottom and the second item to be shuffled to the top.

After the thread returns from Enqueue I notice that this is exactly what happens to my list, HOWEVER if I hit the "step_in" button after the execution of Enqueue I go into the Default Property's set method where Index = 1 and value = and it screws everything up, because the item that got shuffled to the end (index 1) gets overwritten by the item value shuffled to the top.

So basically the set method on the default property is getting called at what I think to be a completely ridiculous time. What gives? By the way I'm running VS2005 on XP.

Can you look at my coding and let me know what I'm missing or doing wrong?I have a SSRS report that is called from a ReportViewer control and the ProcessingMode for this control is Remote. The report also has 1 parameter in it's DataSet.In the code I placed a MsgBox to make sure the code is finding the parameter and returning the parameter name. I am trying to stick the value of 10 into the parameter for playerID 10. Data for this player does exist.

I believe I need to add some more code to make this work but I'm not sure what else to add.

Has anyone seen or heard of mind mapping inside VB.net before? Are there programs out there already that work with VB.net or anyone have an example they have seen / built that works?

Best Way To Manage GUI States

I was asked by a client to create a tool that would let a user add/modify/delete/read content from a database. The content can be read from TextBoxes.

My question is, what is the best way to manage GUI locks/unlocks for the different states of the program. IE: If I'm in a "insert" mode, some GUI elements should be enabled, and some not. If I'm in the "read-only" mode, a bunch of them should be disabled... etc.

Best Way To Manage Strings?

Aug 21, 2010

I am writing a program that uses an array with three columns and a varying amount of rows. I need to load info on a list of files in an archive(specifically: file name, size, path), and I am wondering what the most convenient way to store strings(to be loaded into the array) is.

For example: I tried creating a new .resx file in my project, and writing a function to be executed on form1_load that reads the strings from the .resx file and places them in the array in their correct column, but unfortunately had no success.

I really have no idea how resx files work, I can put strings in them using the resource editor, but I don't know how to retrieve them using resourcemanager.

I would just put the info straight into an array, but it's much easier to update a .resx file when the archive changes than it is to update the code.

Could someone please tell me how to use .resx files in vb.net? Or an easier way of accomplishing my goal?

Can't Manage To Add Different Values Together

Feb 3, 2011

I can't manage to add different values together...

TextBoxAnswer.Text = TextBox1.Text + TextBox2.Text + TextBox3.Text + TextBox4.Text

I import decimal values from my SQL Server into the TextBoxes 1-4, which works fine. But when I try to add the values together into another textbox the answer is just the values combined like a string...?The column of the table in the SQL server has a datatype decimal(18, 2)I have also tried to convert the values in the textboxes into int, str, double... Nothing seems to work...

Example:

Answer = 2,50 + 2,50 + 5,50 + 4,50
So,
TextBoxAnswer.Text = 10,00

but, all I get is:

2,502,505,504,50

How To Manage Directories

May 29, 2012

I am now convinced there is no such thing using VB 2010 Express. I have read, re-read, studied, copied and pasted code to no end and all I get are error messages galore. It appears there is a big gap between what's on line as far as tutorials and the code that VB 2010 Express will accept. I hate to sound so lost but at the moment I am. I used to program in BASIC and QBASIC. I was a master at opening up ascii text files, reading them in sequential order, sorting, manipulating, then re-writing them. It was all so easy, like this: [code] That's all I want to learn how to do for the moment. But every tutorial or article I find goes off in to wild tangents about How to Manage Directories or it reads the entire text file into one giant object. Or worse, there's some code which looks promising but it won't run under VB 2010 Express or it might run but the author leaves out important parts of the code that have to be declared ahead of the subroutine....you all know what I mean. It can't be this difficult to just read a text file one line at a time, therefore it shouldn't be so difficult to find an accurate and up to date article on this.This is for really rough programming. I don't need an interface of any kind. The user, will not even need to know that anything is happening. I simply want to read text files, manipulate what's in them and then re-write the edited text.

I have predefined some queries for the situations that I know they need to be in the application.

The idea is that I need kind of a module in which an user can create his own situation based on the tables, views, functions and procedures that already exist in the database. Something like it is in SQL. There has to be a library or something which will read my sql database directly from my application and which allow the user to create his own queries and situations.

Properly Manage Data From XML?

Nov 3, 2010

I am reading data from an XML file. This local XML file will be updated by another application, and I will need to periodically re-evaluate the XML file, and only import new data into a list box. Furthermore, I want to be able to click on a particular item in the listbox, and display the other values about that particular XML entry.

So, I suppose this is a multi part question. What is the proper way to import only NEW data into the program, what is the proper way to store the data, and how do I associate a value in a listbox with the data stored elsewhere?

I've considered multidimensional arrays, but have been told that strings to char arrays and then back to strings is a terrible way to manage the data, but was never offered an alternative.
