Message Of The Day (IRC) - Thread Race Conditions
Dec 29, 2011
Basic out line connecting to an irc server. We connect to this server using a TCP client on a separate thread from the UI. Now the raw numeric for the MOTD is "372" so when our streamreader reads this value from the worker thread it raises it's value and displays it to a RTB. Now my issue. When i connect to a server i wait till raw "372" before i check to see if i need to join a channel. But a lot of servers have more then then one line MOTD each sending there own "372". So if a server has a long MOTD that could mean over 100 "372".
Now while it does not effect the UI of my app i wish to move the "372" to it's own thread from the current worker thread. But thats the problem. How do i move the MOTD to it's own thread when it's still being read.

This is something probably very simple for you all by the looks of these other thread but I can't figure it outThis is a hotel reservation order form.IsFormComplete function checks to make sure the form is complete, if true it calls GetOrderList which... well you get it.The problem is this:I have checked functionality at random and everythn there is an error, message box displays what is wrong... except one thing. When you complete everything but choose cash as the payment method and click place order, the message box pops up with the GetErrorList caption "Please Complete the following:" BUT there is no error reported after. I'm losts, I know, it's probably terribly written to begin with but I'm all of a week in to the class so I will get there.
Option Explicit On
Option Strict On
Option Infer Off

I use a worker thread to do the procedure of query and fill the datasetAnd I use 3rd party component called DevExpress XtraGrid: GridControl to view the query outputI don't forget to use invoke and delegate to set the GridControl.datasourceOn Timer.Tick(), the thread is started and the procedure is called user has scrolled down the GridControl, even only one scroll value instead,and then the Timer.Tick() fired, I gottwo errors randomly. Mostly aNullReferenceException error and eventually anInvalidOperationException error

For a race, I am trying to evenly disperse the heats for smaller race groups within those of larger race groups. I do not want the smaller groups to finish too early and I am also trying to minimize groups running back to back heats.
As an example:
Group A has 4 heats
Group B has 2 heats
Group C has 1 heat
The resulting schedule would look something like this:
A1 B1 A2 C1 A3 B2 A4
To complicate things, there could be any number of race groups and each race group can have any number of heats.

I have been given an assignment for my VB.Net class. Basically,given the race car's weight, horsepower and distance traveled,determine the time.I am going a couple of steps further...
(1) I am including two pictures of competing race cars at the staging area and a short track to travel (makes the assignment more interesting). I would like to know if it is possible to provide an animated light sequence of the Race Tree (staging lights, 3 sets of amber lights, and the green light) with a timer activating the start of the race.
(2) I would also like to incorporate a "sound" track of a race car as the two race cars proceed to the finish line. I realize that the user may enter any distance for the race. Regardless of the amount of time it takes to run the track (if given a long distance),I'm going to calculate the total time to span just 15 sec. Again, I would like to know if it's possible to incorporate these two
separate modules into my program using the Window's form application?Also, what resources should I study to gain knowledge on how to
execute the two modules?

I have a legacy data table in SQL Server 2005 that has a PK with no identity/autoincrement and no power to implement one. As a result, I am forced to create new records in ASP.NET manually via the ole "SELECT MAX(id) + 1 FROM table"-before-insert technique.Obviously this creates a race condition on the ID in the event of simultaneous inserts.
What's the best way to gracefully resolve the event of a race collision? I'm looking for VB.NET or C# code ideas along the lines of detecting a collision and then re-attempting the failed insert by getting yet another max(id) + 1. Can this be done?

im having problems with IP To country code, it checks country on .dat file, and it gives this error.Probable I/O race condition detected while copying memory. The I/O package is not thread safe by default. In multithreaded applications, a stream must be accessed in a thread-safe way, such as a thread-safe wrapper returned by TextReader's or TextWriter's Synchronized methods. This also applies to classes like StreamWriter and StreamReader.
My
Dim country As String = Me.geo.lookupCountryName(DataGridView1.Item(1, count).Value)
DataGridView1.Item(4, count).Value = country.ToString

I tried to update the button text on a form from a backgroundworker.do_work event, and it failed, with the usual cross-thread exception message.However, by pure chance, I also tried to update text in a system.windows.form.toolstripstatuslabel also from this backgroundworker.do_work event, and it DOES work. Question: why is this? Is it perhaps because theres some kind of implicit shared behaviour with system.windows.form.toolstripstatuslabel?

In one application, I need use 4 simultaneous threads.When the threads finished, I need to update the text of a TextBox.So, I create 4 Textbox, and I wanna the threads change the text to FINISHED.Each thread change one distinct TB.I use this "example"
Dim Terminados As Integer = 0
Private Sub frmEnviarMensagem_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Timer1.Enabled = True
Timer1.Start()
[code]....
The problem is, I have an error in the red lines.The error is: INVALIDOPERATIONEXCEPTION "Cross-Thread operation not valid: Control tbPlaca1 Accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on."I don't use cross threading. Each TB only was accessed for the correspondent thread, and for the "main program".

This is the error message I am getting:
"Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Panel1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." The reason I am getting this error is because I am opening up a new form and then calling these three things:
Panel1.Show()
Label1.Show()
Label2.Show()
why I get this error message because it doesn't occur normally if I open Form2 after closing Form1, it only occurs when I open Form2 after closing Form4.

Would anyone be able to help me here please. I'm fairly new to VB.net and threading so im just trying to figure out what is happening.When I debug this I am getting the error thread operation not valid: Control 'ProgressBar1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.
I'm a little lost as to why the error is occuring or how to fix it. I've had to put the progress bar in a separate thread otherwise the GUI crashes

My understanding is that thread.join will suspend the execution of code on the calling thread until the spawned thread finishes or is aborted...
With that in mind, I tried this:
For i = 1 to 50
threads = New Thread(AddressOf test)
threads.IsBackground = True
threads.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA)
[CODE]...
However, the rest of the code runs when the loop finishes, not waiting for all the spawned threads to finish. Since the rest of the code needs the threads to finish (otherwise the rest will error).

I have written an application that loads a form - frmCad as well as AutoCad. It does this via a class which detects when AutoCad quits.
Friend Class CadApp Private WithEvents AppObject As AcadApplication... Private Sub AppObject_BeginQuit(ByRef Cancel As Boolean) Handles AppObject.BeginQuit RaiseEvent Quit() End SubEnd Class
My main class loads frmCad as well as CadApp.
Public Class Cad Private WithEvents frmCad As CadForm Private WithEvents app As CadApp... Public Sub ShowForm() If frmCad Is Nothing Then frmCad = New CadForm frmCad.Visible = True End Sub... Private Sub app_Quit() Handles app.Quit frmCad.Dispose() frmCad = Nothing .... End Sub
When I debug the program, it stops at frmCad.Dispose()The program continues to execute, but all the code after it fails to work.Looking more carefully I get an error message which contains:-Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Autocad' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

i used it and it works fine then. but as it is mentioned its not a good practice to use it. So what should i do? is it ok if i use this as i am not able to use correct practice. Mine application is not for enterprise purpose. its just my class project, and it works fine even if i put application working in background. System works ok. I dont know how to correct this error.As i dont have that much knowlege of threads.
So please guide me how to fix this in correct way otherwise i am force to go for bad programming practice

I added an "edit" icon on my bindingNavigator. When users click on it, a new form will come out and pull out all the data records from the datagridview. Now the strange thing is that when I wanted to edit the data records, when I left the product name blank, I would get an error message saying "Product cannot be blank" - please see above code. But when I left the "Cost Price" blank(same applies to "Sell Price" and "Quantity"), the error message box wouldn't come out, instead, it did not allow me to move on to another textbox, close the form etc until I filled out that textbox with INTEGER. May I know why the error mesagebox would not come out when I entered the wrong datatype?

I am very new to vb, I know there is an error somewhere, I had an assignment which stated that if a number was < 101 or > 500 and the answer is correct the output should be, for example-123, if the answer was wrong then the message output should be wrong number <101>500. Everytime I type in a number(no matter what the number) and click on my check button I get the output message. If at all possible, can you please assist. My professor gave the following example, but I am still not getting it:
Dim strInteger As String = "52.801"
Dim dblNumber As Double
dblNumber = CDbl(strInteger)

I'm creating a Client Server application which involves theServer running some scripts in clients and getting back results in an automated way. In Server, other than Main thread, i have 2 worker threads, a) one monitoring response from clients and b) the other scheduling next available job to respective client which executes that job. The issue here is ,I want these worker threads to write the status of their work in the UI(which comes under Main Thread). Also i need to write things in worker thread in a Data table and Rich Text Box in Main thread. But, I can't do so, since it has been blocked to access one thread's function or property directly from others. Is there any work around to do this?

Preface: I know this is an unusual/improper way to do this. I can do this with a "real" ShowDialog(), background worker/thread, and so on. I am trying to do specifically what I describe here, even if it is ugly. If this is impossible for X reason, I have created a fancy progress dialog for some of our long running operations. I need to have this dialog shown on a new thread while having processing continue on the calling (UI in most cases) thread.

I need your help on the following. In debugging mode only the program is stopping to the following line "My.Forms.FormMain.HelpProviderMain.HelpNamespace = "Reports.chm"" with the following error ""An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'FormSplash' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.""
I noticed that when I am putting NONE in SPLASH screen option in the properties of the project, there is no problem.I am no familiar with treating that's why can you give me detail instruction how to overcome this annoying problem?

I am getting this exception: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'TextBoxOutput' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. in a VB 2008 Windows Forms application that I havent specifically made multi-threaded. I have create a sub called Out() like this:
Private Sub Out(ByVal inString As String)
Me.TextBoxOutput.Text += (Me.TextBoxOutput.Text & inString & vbNewLine)
Me.TextBoxOutput.SelectionStart = Me.TextBoxOutput.Text.Length
Me.TextBoxOutput.ScrollToCaret()
End Sub
and I call it from various events to log messages I am getting from my pbx, which I use a third party open source dll to access. The interesting thing to me is that if I run the deployed application (ie, not in the VS IDE) I do not get any exceptions, it's only from within the IDE.if I add the line: Control.CheckForIllegalCrossThreadCalls = False to the form's constructor, the exceptions stop, but a) this seems like a hacky way to get around the issue and b) the application seems to hang sometimes when I have it set this way.
