Multi-threading With The Background Worker Component?

Mar 30, 2010

I have form with a button and when the button is clicked it opens another form called form2.

On the form2 load event I'm grabbing some info from form1 and loading a crystal report and passing the report some parameters , then printing the report. Once the report is sent to the printer the form is closed.

Can I put this process on a background worker to improve the printing performance of my program and could someone point me in the right direction for doing this? I've found some examples online but I lack the vision to see how those examples could work for me.

Background Worker And Multiple Threading

Apr 27, 2010

I have created a background worker to go and run a pretty long task that includes creating more threads which will read from a file of urls and crawl each. I tried following it through debugging and found that the background process ends prematurely for no apparent reason. Is there something wrong in the logic of my code that is causing this. [code]Also my main thread runs a forms from where this background is called to run but the main thread is supposed to wait for the background process to end unless the user selects another option from the main form.

Re-write Application To Be Multi-threaded Using The Background Worker?

Jul 23, 2009

how to re-write my application (http:[url]....) to be multi-threaded using the background worker. The use case is something like:

1. User opens a binary file, it can be several Gbytes in size so reading it into memory isn't practical.

2. User can then navigate through the file in 188byte chunks, data is read from disk, decoded, and displayed for each chunk in turn.

3. User may want to search for some data or build a report. This will involve repeating the read, decode, display, function multiple times. During this looping the GUI stops responding and there is no option to cancel so I want to make it multi-threaded. So, is it safe to open the file in the GUI thread and then read from the file in the background thread? I currently use something like this to open the file once:

Dim fi As New FileInfo(filepath)
fs = fi.OpenRead()
and then in a separate sub multiple calls to:[code]..........

WPF Background Worker Not Recognizing Worker Object

I have the following code that adds a background worker into a VB.net WPF project:

Imports System

Imports System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker

[Code].....

And I get the following error for the DoWork worker event:

Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types.

It seems like it's missing something in the Event declaration, but can't find it.

VS 2008 Multi-threding - Adding Multi-threading Facilities - Cross-thread Operation Not Valid

Feb 10, 2010

I'm adding multi-threading facilities for the first time. I have a function that is wrapped to be run in a separated thread. This function retrieves data (text) from a combobox and it works for sure without multi-threading.

When I call it as multi-threaded, I get the following error when I try to retrieve the data from the cmobobox: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'cmb1stBL' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

It looks like a restriction of thread-safety... I assume that the child thread cannot read from his parent, to make sure that he doesn't change his parent data. So how can I read the data from the combobox? Should I read the comoboxbox data before calling the child thread?

My LoadData method works fine when called directly, but it fails when it is called from the BackgroundWorker thread. When it is called from the background thread, it throws a Specified cast is not valid exception on the csearch.AutoCompleteCustomSource.Add(hh("Taj")) line. Below is my code:

Sub LoadData()

Using A Background Worker?

Jul 15, 2011

I'm writing an application in Visual Basic Express 2008, part of the function being to walk through a folder structure starting from a user specified folder. In my research, I found this thing called a background worker which seemed an appropriate tool to use given the potential size of a target folder structure. I successfully installed the two examples from the library here, and believe I understand the principles involved. Even so, having tried to build this feature into my application, it seems as though it is not working as expected, and, as predicted, debugging a multi-threaded application is a pain in the extremity.

I have this fragment under my "start" button click event -

HomeSource.Enabled = False
HomeCopy.Enabled = False
HomeReport.Enabled = False

Best Way Of Multi-threading?

Mar 3, 2009

I need to be able to call a C++ dll that takes a long time (possibly infinte, it relies on user input)to execute. Im calling this through VB. My VB GUI freezes up when this happens, and I would like to keep the GUI responsive, so that the user can stop this possibly infinte loop. A bit of background, the C++ is trying to keep score on a snooker table using a webcam, and while the VB scoreboard updates easily, I would like to script it so that the analysis is almost continuous, while still allowing the user to interact. Currently the project requires the user to press a button to start the shot analysis, but it would be preferable if the program scripted itself. I have only realised this problem now and the deadline is very soon.

Update: Our lecturer suggested an option to solve the problem, but it would appear that most options here and the one he suggested will not work for us as the processing time required for the webcam image capture is too great to handle due to hardware constraints.

Background Worker RunWorkerCompleted?

Nov 20, 2008

I have a background worker that used to fire its RunworkerCompleted event when its DoWork routine finished querying a database and writing its output to a file. The bg worker was in a class called Query, which was called from another class called Trigger. A new Trigger Class was created for each monitored event. In this class, there was a structure which stored the config of each Trigger. When this event was triggered (set to TRUE) a new query class is created and it is passed the Trigger class. When the database query, file writing was done, the query class and all its rsources were diposed from the RunWorkerCompleted EventRecently I changed the application so that a new trigger class is not created for each monitored event. There is a single instance of the class but new config structure for each event. When a particular event is trigger, jsut the config structure is passed to a new query class and the sma ething is done in the query class. I just noticed now that the RunWorkerCompleted event is not being fired anymore.

Background Worker Not Working Right?

Apr 27, 2010

I have created a background worker to go and run a pretty long task that includes creating more threads which will read from a file of urls and crawl each. I tried following it through debugging and found that the background process ends prematurely for no apparent reason.

While Not myreader.EndOfData
Try
currentRow = myreader.ReadFields()
Dim currentField As String

[code]....

This first bit of code is the loop to input from file and this is what the background worker does. The next bit of code is where the background worker creates threads to work all the 'landingPages'. After about 10 threads are created the background worker exits this sub and skips the file input loop and exits the program.

Try
For Each landingPage As String In landingPages
pgbar.Timer1.Stop()
If VisitedPages.Contains(landingPage) Then

[code]....

Also my main thread runs a forms from where this background is called to run but the main thread is supposed to wait for the background process to end unless the user selects another option from the main form.

Background Worker With Several Forms

Jan 11, 2012

I've been experimenting with background worker to maintain responsiveness and to allow the UI to update while things are being done in the background.I've been having problems getting the background worker to do anything with form controls.For simplicity lets say I have form1 and form2.The background worker is on form1Initially I couldnt get it to edit controls on form1 but by using [code]However the problem came when I tried to get the same background worker to update controls on form2, in this case a text box. With the above code there is no error but it also does not update the text box.Is there an easy way to give a background worker access to multiple forms.

.NET Perform Any Multi-threading On Its Own?

May 30, 2009

I know .Net and C# pretty well, but never even looked at VB.My problem is: our Win32 COM library is used by a number of clients, and we see that the number of failures is higher for those who use the library from VB (both VB and VB.NET) than for those who use C++, C# or Delphi. One thing about our library is that it is supposed to be used from one thread only - can some threading magic by VB be the cause of failures?

Clients tell us the do not create any extra threads on their own.

Better Performance With Multi Threading?

Feb 15, 2009

I'm creating a password hash recovery tool that uses brute force. I have the brute force algorithm run in a background worker. It all works, but some similar apps I tried out have performance ~100x bigger then my app. (mine does 50k keys/second, some others do 5m keys/second or more.)I realize this is partly caused by using a .Net language, but I suspect there are ways to significantly speed up the brute force. A lot of ppl say I should use multi threading, but how is this done in practice? Splitting up the passwords to check would slow down my app I think.

and inside DoMyWork which is in another assembly i can call SendMessage which writes to the textbox. The messages will only display though when DoMyWork is complete. How can I update TextBox1.Text on the fly without putting DoMyWork on a BackGround thread or do i have to put it on a BackGround thread?
