I have multiple forms and have multiple declarations that I need for all the forms, is there a better way than declaring them each time on each form? Can a .dll do this, if so does it require the .dll to be a seperate file than the final .exe file. Or is there someway to reference the variables on other forms?

I have declared this variable in a module : Public GenericForm As System.Windows.Forms.Form
and then through code I can asign to that variable a specific form .For example GenericForm = Form1. Then I can use that variable to handle that specific form , for example :
GenericForm.Show
My problem begins when I want to handle a control on that form , for example :
GenericForm.TextBox1.Text = "aaa"
This code creates an error reading :TextBox1 is not a member of System.Windows.Forms.Form.I have been using code like this in VB6 and was quite useful ,but now in VB .NET I cannot .You see I have many forms on which there are some text boxes with the same name,so I declare a generic variable as Form and accordingly insert the code the desired text box conform the form I wish each time . Can I do this in VB .NET too ?
I have just been experimenting with nesting classes within a User class I had already created.

I get the same error message!!! "Declaration expected". Also I notice the variable's name is not coming up in intellisense. I have not come across this before as declaring an using variables and objects has been straight forward up until now.
I am building a generic search form in my application. This will allow the user to search for various records throughout the application. The one thing I cannot seem to figure out is how to allow the declaration of the TableAdapter to change at run-time. Each part of the app will be passing a variable to the search form to specify which table should be loaded. In the form class I have the following:
FRIEND WITHEVENTS tbaSearchData AS database.databaseTableAdapters.TableOneTableAdapter This is great for TableOne. But, I have about a hundred tables that could be searched through. To load the data I'm using a DataGridView and populating it via a private method.

This correctly returns the memory value as string. So yeah, now it's just the Single that's causing issues.
I have a program that uses two forms. The program opens to the Main form, and the user can navigate to the other form from the Main form through use of a button. Here's the way I've currently written it: When the Main form loads, it declares and instantiates the other form during the load procedure. When the user presses a button, the second form is displayed by means of the ShowDialog method. On the second form, there is a Return to Main Screen button which closes the second form, bringing the user back to the Main form.
So, here's the structure of the code:

Here's my reasoning: Originally, I wrote the code so that a new instance of the second form was created every time the button was pressed. The problem was that whatever data was displayed on the second form, previously, was lost when the user returned to it a second time. Since the user would be switching back and forth between these forms, frequently, I needed that data to persist.
What is the best practice for accomplishing this:
1) Declare and instantiate the second form on program start, as I have done, and use the button simply to show the form?
2) Declare and instantiate the second form each time the button is pressed but maintain the variables on the Main form and pass them ByRef to a custom constructor for the second form? Is this even possible?
3) Something else?
Is there a better way to make a form with multiple buttons opening different things than having a form that has lots group boxes for each tab. So in the begining each box will be invisible and when you click the button the corresponding group box will become visible. Is there any other way?It will be like a background image and it'll have buttons that will mask it with invisible buttons. when the button is clicked it will open the corresponding group box.

So my question is that I have 2 list boxes in two forms aside from the main one. and I am trying to transfer what I choose in the side form to transfer to the list box.
several questions: Why does the blank list form I have in the main form create a problem when I enter a name for the list box and why does it appear in the box when I put it there? As you can see in my errors. It doesn't seem to recognize the listbox that I wanted to leave empty in the main form.
Second question is how do I get names to add in the main form list box. I believe I have the right code but I seem to be missing something else as well. I want the names to display in the main list box and the integers to add up together so I can separately figure the tax and shipping myself.

I am using this line of code on form load event it is working very fine but i have to problems
1. It replaces the form name and display the date and time but i want to keep both date and time and forms caption separated by some space.
2. When form loads it load the current date and time but the time does not change it should run.
What should i do please please help me code is as follows

Or like this:

I always use the first one. It's more type work but I think it's neater. How about you people and is there any real difference between the two?

View 8 RepliesI have finished constructing my form and have completed my code. I have built the project with no errors, warnings or messages. None of my code is flagged up as erroneous. Yet when I try and run my app to test it, the form does not display at all!! It did, but it doesn't anymore. The only thing I have added to my form since it did display correctly is a couple of Month Calender controls and a couple of buttons, with a piece of code behind each control.
I have not altered any properties for the actual form itself..
I would like to display a PropertyGrid on a form at runtime to simplify some testing that I am doing. I have it working except that the PropertyGrid does not pickup any extender provider properties (eg ToolTip). How do I make it aware of any extender providers also?
View 4 RepliesHow would i go about creating a "Search Feature". I have all of the algorithms to do this, but at the moment it's hassle for me to have both forms, and 3 separate buttons for searching. I think its more complicated than it needs to be. I was thinking about creating a label at the top of form and using the following:

But how would i get it to get the value of the text box from a separate form, and make form perform a separate feature, if you see what i mean.
The following code does create a form within a form and does place NotePad inside the child form. You have to manually start NotePad prior to execution (I work on that later) but the code does workŠ My problem is now I want to manipulate the properties of notepad i.e. focus, size, location, etc. but I cannot figure out how to reference notepad and its properties.

1. Is there a way for called form to know which form called it by receiving a code or key from the calling form?
2. The calling form has a gridview. How can the called form pick up a column's value from the currently highlighted row in gridview in the calling form?
i have my main child form open. then i show the new form:

but when the form opens it flickers a lot. so i want move the new form behind the main form while it loads so the user does not see the flicker. once it is done loading i will set the form to topmost. how do i move the new form behind the main form?
its 3rd or 4th time that i am having this problem. the problem is that suppose i added a new control, any one textbox, button, combobox, checkbox etc etc. and when i run my project so it does not show that new control on form. or sometimes i add a control and it display on my form at run time but when i delete the control so it does appear still on form at run time. what is wrong with this?

This ends with the form freezing for a moment, and then it resizes, but it's not until the end of the resize does it display properly, during the resize, their is a big black bar where the new part of the form is supposed to be.And when it's done resizing, it draws itself correctly.
I'm making a loginsystem and I want the form that I'm making it in will keep focus so if the "user" try click on another program there is running my form will take focus again, so the user cant get into the other programs there is running.
