Network Messenger Needs Improvments And Ideas Please Check It Out

So I have had some "free" time at work and came across a write up some where on these forums yesterday for a messenger system. I would REALLY like to give credit where credit is due because alot of the source for this was borrowed from the write up on here but I don't remember where the write up is located or who wrote it so please if you have a link to it post it. Thank you again to who ever wrote it. Any how on to this. I have expanded the origional messenger I found on d.i.c to include multi-user "chat" if you will. It is still a basic p2p messanging system because you can only talk to one person at a time but you can speak to multiple people in the same window. So far I have been able to get it to work across our LAN here at the office but am wondering if I can change the text file locations to an FTP some how and make it internet based. I am sorry for the uncommented code as I was in a rush cranking this out but it is fairly simple so you should be able to read through it with ease.[code]

And i'm trying to start a Instant Messenger/Social Network like XFire, so I would like to know questions like,How would I get started? I know and like VB but is that too simple, i'm learning C#/C++ also Would I need to host a server?
I would like it be able to do:Instant Messanging A home screen with you to able to launch programs Be able to check if a user is offline or online and what game they are playing A buddy system

As I design my system using VB.NET with SQL Server/T-SQL I'm always struck by what seems to me an obvious gap, namely VB Class Properties. Say I have a table Employee with columns: [code]In VB I might have a class like:[code]So my property SpeaksAForeignLanguage depends on two fields currently. Perhaps someday this will change and more fields or conditions might come into play. THAT'S THE WHOLE REASON for using properties.Now if I need the equivalent of my property in SQL for whatever reason there's no way to do it other than to recode some SELECT statement using the two Knows... columns.

I have a custom user control that inherits asp:Repeater and get's 'initialized' on first run - it finds the children controls (in repeater item template) and creates a SQL table based on a tablename property provided as an attribute on the control. To know not to initialize it again, I simply check for the table (this has issues).
My problem is, tablename property should not be changed after initialization, days or even weeks later.
How can I tie a readonly property and value to a particular control only after initialization?
Sounds pretty tricky, maybe impossible. Out of the box solution?

I can't seem to work this out... I've got a program that references a network path. The problem is that the network files are not found when I run the program from various computers. If I have the user navigate to the network path directoy and then run the program it works perfectly.
The problem is that whenever the machine is restarted I run into the same problem and have to manually navigate to that path before the program will be able to find the files.
I then tried several checks to see if the directory exists but it's not working.

If you are writing a program that is used to monitor the status of your network, then this thread may not be of interest.
If you are an application programmer that uses network resources to accomplish your goal, i.e. you are using SMTP, FTP, HTTP, NNTP, NTP etc., and you think that you need to check for a connection first, then read on.Follow up to this.Before getting all geeky let's take a little detour...
Five days a week I get up, eat breakfast, check my email, forums, etc., take a shower, get dressed, and then drive to school.Many of you probably have a similar routine.What is interesting about that is not what we do, but what we dont do,because of our expectations and experience.Here is what I dont do.
I dont stick my finger in the electrical socket to see if there is electricity for the coffee maker and toaster.I dont fire up the command prompt and ping some host on the internet to see if I have connectivity.I dont check the battery, tires, water level, clutch fluid level, washer fluid level, etc.,before I drive off.
All of that is based on expectation and experience.So why would you write an application that pings the internet before it did something (SMTP, FTP, HTTP, NNTP, NTP etc)???? Is your experience or expectation that the network will be down?To illustrate and hopefully convince you that, like Oblio, it is pointless, create a new form with three buttons. In the following examples I use a WebRequest / WebResponse as my 'Something'.Here is what some think is a good approach, the classic ping-then-do, what I think you shouldn't do.[code]....What is wrong with this code is that all of the network IO is being done without a Try / Catch block.

Here is my idea so far: I have a bunch of computers connected in a local network. One of them is a MySQL server, one will have a vb.NET program wich will act as a "second server" and the rest will be different clients. What I want to do is that the "second server" will send out some kind of message or network package to some of the clients in the network, and they will execute a code based on what message it is, or what kind of package it is. i have a task to create a TCP Server (a program that is listening on its network card interfaces for incoming data stream).I have search on the internet and i found that i can use two methods : Socket or TCPListener class.I have created an example for Socket class, but i wondering how could i test it? I need to check that if another computer in the network send some string data to the listener computer , then this message should be displayed.Here is the example from microsoft that i am using for TCP Server using Socket:

I have a .NET 2.0 *.dll that calls My.Computer.Network.Ping(). The *.dll is then run out of an *.exe via AppDomain.CreateDomain() and Invoke(). The problem is that this works just fine under Windows XP but under Windows 7, I get an exception saying that no network connection is available. I tried the Ping() call out of a small console application under Windows 7 and it works just fine.

i am trying to make a messenger client which will work like alerter or similar, so far i have decided to to make two applications,
1) which will send messenger,(sender)
2) which will accept msg and display a alert to user using msgbox.(receiver)
i have started coding receiver, i am using port 6000 to listen to messenger.so far i have made code to listen to port(open/bind/listen)but now i am not able to figure out how to display messages to user received on that port.

I have instant messenger that I have built its working great with the assistance of a few of you in this great forum..Now I would like to enhance it alittle more and have not been able to get it to work. So here I am asking you out there again for some help. I want each user that logs in to have a different color font for there messages.
