Office Automation :: Excel File - Set A Reference To The Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Library
Oct 6, 2009
I'm trying to upgrade a VB6 app to VB 2008. I have read the article in the tutors corner about automating Excel from VB but I cannot get it to work. Heres what I have done:
1) set a reference to the Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Library
2) Added "Imports Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel" to the top of the module
3) in a routine I have added: Dim X As New Excel.Application Here's where I get an error: Error 75 'Application' is ambiguous in the namespace 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel'.

I have 2003 xls file which is saved on a web share point. File combines vbs functionalities, of which one is uploading data to this file (from another file on the same share point) by clicking command button. When I open file from my location it all functionalities are working without problems. My customer is running it from his location, he is also using Excel 2003, the moment he wants to upload the data he gets the bug.
Message: Method "Worksheets" of object "_Global" failed
I checked and it seems that in the references he has 10.0 object library and I have 11.0 What i can do to unify the coding so it is indifferent from Object Library version?I have read about late va early binding, I guess i'm using late binding I also check that i can adjust late binding buy standard codes.
Dim oExcel As Object
Dim oWorkbook As Object
Dim oWorksheet As Object

I use the following code snippet
Dim exlapp As New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application
Dim xlWorkBook_new As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Workbook
Dim strOriginal As String
strOriginal = Server.MapPath(Request.ApplicationPath & "/Attachments/") & "abc.xls"
xlWorkBook_new = exlapp.Workbooks.Open(strOriginal)
The code hangs in the last line. It works fine in the development environment. i deployed in windows server 2000 ,where I get this issue. the browser goes half way and throws the below exception after some time
[Code]...
I have set the identity impersonate to true in web config. This should be mostly an access rights issue.I have even provided access rights for the "everyone " user in the excel file and as well for the interop component. Please post ur valuable comments.

I have been doing a lot of reading on this topic and most folks seem to agree that having Excel is required to use the COM Interop libraries. However they are never specific as to where that should be installed. Does it need to be installed on the machine I am developing on or does it need to be on every machine that I deploy to?
Edit: I should mention that this is desktop development/deployment targeted for all Windows machines.

Basically I've coded an Excel 2007 project in VB.NET 2010 that allows you to create charts with a fair amount of interactivity. I want the user to be able to save and reopen this workbook and still have that interactivity in any already-created charts, so they don't have to re-create them.
When I create the charts, I use Sheet1.Controls.AddChart(...), which returns a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Excel.Chart with which I can handle events and such. However, when I reopen the file and look through the Sheet1.Controls collection, there are no Chart objects. Accessing the charts through Sheet1.ChartObjects.Chart gives me Interop Charts, when I need the Tools Charts.

So I've been trying to write an Add-In for Excel for a week now. I already have the add-in made up in VBA (CustomUI.xml has been added too for a ribbon). I've been using it for awhile now from Excel's VBA Editor. But I want to get a bit more fancy with it, so I'm going to re-write it in VB.net since it's ribbon designer is nicer than writing XML code by hand. The only problem is, I've been very confused on how Visual Studio sets up all the references to Excel. As I've been looking through examples in threads across this forum I see a lot of people using this code to get access to Excel.

My company is currently in the process of upgrading from Office 2000 to Office 2010. The upgrade won't take place until October, but I am currently testing it on my PC. I have some applications that reference Microsoft Excel 14.0 Object Library VERSION 1.3.0.0 and export DataGridView results to Excel. Since I upgraded my PC to Office 2010, my version of Microsoft Excel 14.0 Object Library was upgraded to 1.7.0.0. Now, Office 2000 users are having issues when trying to export data. They get the following error:"Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."I can't debug to find out the issue because I am running Office 2010 and it works perfectly fine for me. Has anyone else encountered this? I think it's happening right around when it starts to save the file.[code]

I have Visual Studio 2010 and a VB Project that had a reference to Microsoft.Interop.Excel 12.0. Well recently I changed the reference version to 14.0. That was actually a mistake and now I need to bump it back down to version 12.0. However I get this error in my project now...
Project 'MyProject' requires a reference to version '14.0.0.0' of assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel', but references version '12.0.0.0'
of assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel'.
I tried removing references and adding the com object to, but no avail.

I've got VS2008 and Office2010, but I don't have Office2007. Therefore, I have the Word14 Object Library but not the Word12 Object Library. Will the code that I create for Office2010 automation also work where clients only have Office2007 or will they have to upgrade their office suites?

I am writing a program that loops through all of the sheets in an Excel workbook and saves each sheet as its own workbook. It turned out to be a bit trickier than I expected, since the Sheet.Copy method creates a strange object (see here for the MSDN discussion that I believe is relevant: [URL]. Anyway, I found a Stack Overflow post [URL] that got me to where I am, which is essentially complete, outside of one hanging EXCEL.EXE process that is left after the program completes, which I believe is a result of the sheet.copy method creating a new workbook (potentially a new application as well?). The other thing I run into, which I believe is related to this, is that even though I have my application set to visibility off, when I run the program, excel still opens up and is visible going through the steps.
Here is my code:
Code:
Imports System.Data
Imports System.IO
Imports Microsoft.Office.Interop
[CODE]...
Now I think the problem comes from the end of the loop, where I try to close the export file and the new worksheet it creates:
Code:
'close excel and release com objects
System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(exportsheet)
exportsheet = Nothing
xlApp1.Workbooks(fileNames(counter - 1)).Close(False)
I can't figure out what to do to release the `ComObject` for the new worksheet that is created. I have been trying all sorts of things, but it always throws a COM error when I do it and if I try to define it as nothing (like I do with exportsheet) is says that it is read only by default, so I can't do it. It seems like it should be something as simple as: System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ReleaseComObject(xlApp1.Workboo ks(fileNames(counter - 1))) But that is not the case. I have tried a few variants of this and I am thinking it has to do with the MSDN link above, but I can't quite sort out what to do. So the code works for my purposes, outside of leaving one EXCEL.EXE after it is done. As far as a test file, I am just using an Excel file with 3 sheets and I put some information on each and change the sheet name, so it is easy to see if it is working or not.

We have a VB 2005 program that reads data from a database and builds an Excel output file to be emailed. This works fine from my computer but when we put it on the server it fails on the Excel functionality.
The error is: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtim.InteropServices.COMException
Although Excel is not installed on the server we did also build a Setup program to install our program. It copies the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excell.dll to the server folder with the exe.I thought the setup program should register the Excel DLL and the program should work even if the server does not have Office or Excel installed.

How do I import data in Excel from a CSV file using C#? Actually, what I want to achieve is similar to what we do in Excel, you go to the Data tab and then select From Text option and then use the Text to columns option and select CSV and it does the magic, and all that stuff. I want to automate it.

In my app I need to fill an excel file with some data. On change of customer the data needs to be on another worksheet, sheet renamed and so on.
The workbook now has 19 sheets (wSheet.Add(,,16), the first worksheet gets renamed to custno. and the sheets gets filled.
But whatever I try, I can't get onto the other worksheets.
All I Googled seem to raise errors; following code is part of a nested 'If'
Code:
Dim excel As New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application
Dim wBook As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Workbook
Dim wSheet As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet

I have create Office Excel application in my machine(XP). and i have placed the application in windows server 2008 giving the following error.
Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'serverInput.xls'. There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist. The file is being used by another program. The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.
both client and server systems installed office 2007 and added reference microsoftexcellibrary 12.0
created assembly for the application and calling the code from the form.

I'm trying to figure out some Excel automation. I have a form set up so the user can click on a label to open an Excel file (as a background process I guess) so the file isn't actually visible. Once they click on the "Convert to Count" button it will multiply all the values in Column B by 1,250 and put the output in Column C. Once it has finished this action, it makes the file visible so the user can choose to save it or not. Also, some users have Excel 2003 and some have 2007. Would it be possible to be able to load both xls and xlsx?[URL]..I must say I am very new with .NET and have a little bit of knowledge with VB6. I'm not sure where to even begin. I've looked up some ways to load an excel file but couldn't get it to work the way I need it to. Most of the ways I found were loading the file into a DataGridView. I don't want to use a DataGridView if I don't have to. Some of the files the users might be loading could have 10,000+ rows and that would take too long I think.

I'm using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel in VB.Net in order to export an .xls file as a .pdf file. This was the only method I could find without relying on third party software to be installed on the running machine or using an expensive add-on to Visual Studio. This method requires opening excel and saving a file through the code.
My problem is that I only have a trial version of Microsoft office as I never actually use it. Well the limitation of times I can open it is up as I have run the program enough times for debugging purposes and now I can't continue development on this application. Is there a development kit for visual studio that provides the API I need for this functionality without actually having Office installed? I don't need Microsoft Office so I don't want to have to buy a full version just to develop and test an application.
I've looked at some options like this, but there is very specific formatting that needs to remain intact in the .xls for the conversion to .pdf that doesn't seem to work if I use an intermediary format. I've also read a little bit about the openOffice API, but is that compatible with .Net? If so, can someone point me to a tutorial that explains how to use the API with .Net? Specifically VB if possible, but I can work with C# code.

I have a program that reads data from excel.
I use:Imports Microsoft.Office.Interop as well as a Reference from the "COM" tab called "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library"
I built my program then copied the .exe from the inDebug folder to a location on my company's server. I then double clicked the .exe and it ran as I expected it would. My boss then tried (from another computer) and he gets this error:See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Ok basically what I need to do is the following:Read FirstExcelDoc (attached)For every row in that: Retrieve data from sql server db based on info in the Orange columns of FirstExcelDoc Let's say I retrieved data elements A, B, C, D, and E from sql server. Then I need to enter those same data elements A, B, and C in another excel spreadsheet (which has formulas etc) After inputing A, B, and C in that spreadsheet, read a couple of calculated fields and compare those results to data elements D and E retrieved originally from SQL Server DB. Finally, output the results in the Blue columns of the FirstExcelDoc spreadsheet for that row.Loop through and do the same thing for row 2 of the FirstExcelDoc and keep on until you see "END TEST" in the FirstExcelDoc.
I'm looking for a method of doing this efficiently. I have read several articles over the past few days as well as those from Mike R. but just need some direction to get started on this.To start of I'm looking for whether to read the entire FirstExcelDoc spreadsheet or just read the info for first policy number(2nd row) and process it and write out the blue column info for that row and then loop through and come back and read the second policy number (3rd row) etc... Please attach a code snippet for either way of reading the data.

I'm using excel via interop in application.Sometimes users kill application that created excel instance and that results in excel instance sitting in memory without any chance of disposing it.First I tried to tackle this using ROT(running object table) looks like not all instances of excel are registered there.Than I tried to somehow mark excel process after it is started via interop.[code]This works as long as excel is visible but in my case excel window is invisible. All I need is to somehow mark process that started via automation with the parent PID, so that later I can kill it if parent does not exist.
