Playing .mp4 Videos In A Windows Desktop Application
Aug 17, 2010
I'm looking to see if anyone has a good reference for a third-party add-in that will allow me to play .mp4 video files inside my program without a need to embed a web browser in my program.
I have no problem buying it (well that depends on the cost of course!), but I want that when I distribute it, I include their .dll files and it'll work on the user's computer without anything else needed.

I am having a _ton_ of issues, and I am hoping some of you could clear it up...
1. OK So a while back someone showed me an example for fonts from resources, but I noticed if you close the window that it opens, The entire program shuts down... what can I do to fix it?Also, The fonts are not showing up on all computers, only this one....
2. I am trying to delete a image file, which the program downloads from the internet, and can change regularly, but when I try to delete it will not delete. It says its in use, and I cant figure out where.
3. I am trying to play videos using the following
vb
Private Declare Function mciSendString Lib "winmm.dll" Alias "mciSendStringA" (ByVal lpstrCommand As String, ByVal lpstrReturnString As String, ByVal uReturnLength As Integer, ByVal hwndCallback As Integer) As Integer
Const WS_CHILD As Integer = &H40000000
[code]....
Now, I have confirmed the files it is attempting to play are in fact valid video files. It refuses to play all but the last one.

i would like to build an inventory manager application that would have two versions :1. Would run on the desktop 2. Would run on windows mobile 6 I would like to have both these versions store and read data from a database that can be stored centrally either on a webserver or somewhere on the LAN.
I would like to know can i use Access as my backend database or sql server ? will windows mobile app be able to access it and read and write to it Note : I would prefer to create only one database that will just store the details in the tables and do not need any other functionality. All functions such as save,edit,delete,search,filter etc with be done from the FRONT-END VB.NET interface ONLY If you suggestion involves the use of 2 databases such as one for desktop version and one for windows mobile then please also tell me how would i sync the data between them.

One is I can not view the videos from my Bob Tabor subscription and two I do not see the fonts the Step by Step book refers me to access in some of the practices.

having lot of problems playing a video on a form.Is there a better control for viewing videos than windows media player? For video resource files, what should the build action be? Will a form which has a 32-bit windows media player control on it work on a 64-bit computer?For some reason, the following code does not work:
If System.Diagnostics.Debugger.IsAttached() Then
strVidFilePath = System.IO.Path.GetFullPath(Application.StartupPath & "....
esources")[code].....

my program is designed to run on windows7. the mixer in the taskbar lets you control volumes per application. is their a way to determin if a specific application is playing a sound? if not, how would i go about checking to see if the system is currently outputting anysound.
my app is currently setup to use a speech to text and text to speech. basicly i want it to be able to wait for the text to speach software to stop talking before my app plays internal sounds (using the My.Computer.Audio.Play)
i don't have any code to provide as i have no idea where to start.

I'm developing a VB.NET Windows service which is costantly checking a BMS database for new alarms and making phone calls to warn operators remotely. I'm currently using a .NET TAPI wrapper and the SAPI 5.3 interop assembly, and the steps I'm taking to speak over the phone are:
Initialize TAPI interface;Make the call to the operator's number;Take the voice modem waveOut device id Set the voice output to that device id; Let SAPI do the magic. This is all working fine if I compile the code as a Windows console or forms application, but as soon as I compile and run it as a Windows Service, step 5 never occurs - voice modem calls but stays silent; everything else works, even digit monitoring.Now I know windows services are not supposed to interact with the desktop, so things like UI elements and playing sounds are a no-no, but I'm struggling to find an alternative which doesn't involve using the wave API and can be developed in a reasonable timeframe.

Dim zAlbum As String = AxWindowsMediaPlayer1.Ctlcontrols.currentItem.getItemInfo("Album")

The problem is though I would like to notify the user when certain events happen by playing a short audio clip. I know Windows Service's create a virtual Desktop, in which, Audio messages are not sent to the users Desktop.

I am developing and application for playing back recorded clips from dvr. There will be 10 persons reviewing the recorded clips all the time. When the person want to review a particular camera recorded clip, he will send a command through COM to my application. Then my application will read the data from COM and connect to dvr and send data to the dvr. If only 1 person is doing the operation my application works fine. If 10 persons continuously working, then my application is getting very slow and the response time back to the person is high which will make the person frustrated to use the software.
Now, when ever I receive data from COM I'm adding into arraylist and I'm processing one by one. I've 10 forms in my application and when ever I receive data from person1 I'll send that data to form1 and person2's data will be send to form2 and so on for processing. What could be the better way to write my application in order to make the response time to the user faster so that, they'll get the recorded clips faster?

Let's say 10 desktop shortcuts, all with different names/icons, point to and can start the same exe application from the same directory. Is there any means for the application to know the distinct name of the shortcut that was doubled_clicked. Also is there any means for a running application to know if it was started by command line, by a double_click on the exe, by a double_click on a shortcut that points to it, or by another process' call?

Question: I created an ASP.NET web application. Now it originally was meant for deployment on a webserver.That is working, so, so far so good.My question now is: Is it possible to deploy it as a desktop-application, too? That is to say the installer installs some kind of server, plus the web application, configures the server to run this application on a localhost URL, and then creates a link in the start menu/desktop, where it opens that url (website, the application) on localhost in a web browser?
I think it should be possible, though the server wouldn't be IIS, because this is a windows component which can't be separately installed. Is there anything like this already out there The nonplusultra would be that it only starts the server when you click on the shortcut.

I have an application that is written in VB.NET, using the System.Windows.Forms.Form as the front-end GUI. It runs perfectly on my Windows machine however recently there is a business requirement to convert this application to run as a web application so that people could view them in their blackberries when they go to the URL. Is there any quick way to perform such a conversion or I will have to translate the code line-by-line for such cases?

I have a program that speaks wave files. This works problemless with the Soundplayer class with the following code:
Sub MyPlayWav(ByVal WavFileName As String, ByVal StartPos As Long, ByVal EndPos As Long)
Dim wp as new SoundPlayer
wp.SoundLocation = WavFileName
wp.Play
End sub
The soundplayer does however not seem to have a method to play the wave from position StartPos to position EndPos and achieving just that would mean quite a reduction in downloads of these files.
The soundplayer does have a stream object, and that does have a seek method, suggesting that there might be a way to accomplish this, but how?
I plan to include other media files as I am developping the project, and I guess I will be confronted with the same problem.

the system is going to have two front-ends - one web application and one desktop application.The desktop application is going to be coded using VB.NET, and the web application in PHP. There's really no reason why the desktop application can't be replaced by a web application as well - except that one of the programmers seem to really want to code it in VB...However none of us have experience working with either of these pairs .
P.S. hosting service will be gotten from some provider and not be on the client's own server.

I need help on how to launch the normal windows desktop. I have a TCP Client/Server application where the client should start before any other application starts. To do this, I replaced explorer.exe with my application file path in the registry. What I want to do is the client minimizes when it receives a command from the server, and start windows as normal.

I am trying to overcome a problem I am having with remote desktop.Basically I have 2 machines running in different locations. I use remote desktop to access one of them (the "Remote Machine") from the other.("My PC")The "Remote Machine" is performing automated tasks that require the screen to be active, not the user login screen.
When I do so the Remote Machine logs off and presents the normal windows login screen.When I am finished reviewing the remote machine I log off and then I need to log back into the "remote" machine. It has no monitior but I can log in by pressing the enter key which sends a keypress to log into the user account( there is only one). In fact I do this the other way around. I press the enter key on the "Remote Machine" and this logs the user back in - terminating the remote session on "MyPC".
The problem is I have to physically go to the Remote Machine to press this enter key.This is a hassle - One solution is to remotely re-boot the remote pc but the lead time involved is too great.I am unable to fix this problem by tweaking setting or registry hacks so I guess the solution must be to cause the remote user to log back in programatically.I am an experienced VB user but I have never worked outside the windows environment. Ideally I would like to programmtically send a keystroke "{enter}" to the login screen but this doesn't work.

I'm creating a program that requires an MDI Parent Container to keep its Children inside of the client area. If you didnt understand id like a MDI to have all the forms it creates to stay inside of the actual MDI.
I've said like the windows desktop becuase thats what the windows desktop is. It's basically a realy advanced MDI container.If you know any methods on how to do this as this may be used a lot by future programmers and it would be great to just link this to the same type of question.
