Prevent Windows Application (.Net) Termination?
Apr 10, 2012
I have the need to either prevent, or restrict, the termination of a VB.Net application. I have no problem with Admin killing the application, but not a user. I've been unable to come up with a solution for this. Is there maybe even a way to set local policy to prevent termination by non-admin?

I have an application which I wrote in vb.net. When the application starts it connects to mysql database online to get some data and once done it proceeds. The problem is that at times it gets stuck in the mysql thing, I mean after requesting nothing happens and this causes my program to lock up. This can be because of internet problem or server.
Is there a way the program can determine that x seconds has elapsed and it has not got any data, so self terminate it. I tried using timer to perform this action but as the program requests for data, it gets stuck, I mean it locks up and thus timer also locks up and only after task is done everything resumes.
I wanted that when the program is about to start request, I can start a timer and determine that x seconds has elapsed, so now terminate the application.

I just wanted to know that When our Vb.net application terminates are all our foreground threads automatically terminated.I read that all our background threads (worker threads) are all automatically terminated once the application shutsdown (when we dispose it)H/owever i wanted to know about Foreground threads , I know that wehn we use
dim t as thread
t = new thread (address of blahblah)
t.isbackground = true ; //This makes it a worker thread ... which will terminate when the form is disposed
t.start()
my question is now suppose i dont set the background property and make it run as a foreground parallel thread. Will it close when the application disposes...

At the moment, I am writing a class that deals with starting an application in a thread, as well as being able to monitor the closure of the thread and process, and the creation of the thread and process through events. I have absoloutly no problems with monitering the creation of the thread and its internal process within the subs that create them. I placed notifications within the "myprocess_Exited",(for the process closure) and "myprocess_Disposed"(for the thread closure) events.
The problem comes when I terminate the outside application manually; these events do not appear to fire when the application is closed by the user, rather than by code.I thought, since the application closes with an error code when it is terminated in such a way, that it raises the "myprocess_ErrorDataRecieved" event. But this doesn't appear to happen either. Here is some of the code from that class:
'Some of the decleratoins
Event ProcessStarted(ByVal Process As Process)
Event ThreadStarted(ByVal Thread As System.Threading.Thread)

I am making a webbrowser, how to prevent my browser from opening new IE windows. Because what happens is, there are some links that will open new windows and therefore IE comes in place because it is set as default windows browser which I really don't want because my browser looks really bad if it opens links in another webbrowser.I want it to be just a basic browser, it has only one window, and it should navigate within that window. This is because the browser is integrated in a bigger application only for some website applications that are related to this main application.I am using VB.net 2008 Express Edition?

How could I prevent a Windows Form from automatically docking when the form gets dragged to the left or right side of the screen in Windows 7? This is a neat feature in W7, however, for my form it does not make sense (a data input form). Sometimes I drag the form to the right to read some information on a website and input them, yet, under W7 this form docks onto the right half of the screen when I do so.

We have 2 apps that we display at once for data entry. 1 taking up the left side of the screen, and 1 taking up the right side.
1 of those apps is the data entry application. The other app is for viewing scanned info. But they can't talk to each other directly.
So I'm creating a tool that runs in the background to intercept certain keys.
I want to be able to capture keys such of Ctrl + Home, Ctrl + Page Up, etc from the data entry application, and send it to the scanned image to rotate it or zoom, etc.
I believe I can do most of it, except 1 part.
Right now if I did Ctrl + PageUp, it will send the key press to both apps. How do I prevent a keypress from the originating application?

I am working on a client/server based application and I have run into quite a few snags stumbling my way through I have resolved quite a few issues, and need help with something new. I am using a TCPIP client/server and I find that at the end of each loop when I am reading the data from the network stream it appends a character to the end. I have tried removing the last character but I am not sure if it is getting the whole character successfully because I still get lots of different errors both in binary and xml deserialization whcih I think is related to this. Does anyone know the ascii code for the termination character for TCPServer/Client communications?

I'm creating some software to keep my students on task. I've set it up so that I can control certain aspects of their computer from my computer. Problem is, I'm not sure how to control other applications from my application. I mostly just want to prevent it from being minimized. Some students like to switch screens quickly when I walk by. I would just like to make sure that it is always on top until I specify otherwise. I'm using VB.net, I'm using the 3.5 .net framework for compatibility reasons.

I'm still learning Visual Basic and I'm creating a web browser with basic tab and new window support. My problem is that if new windows are created if the original form window is closed, both windows are closed and the program is quitted. This is to be expected but like any browser the program quits based on the last remaining window open. How would I do this in Visual Basic?

I have a Windows 2003 server that we regularly RDP in to monitor some programs that we set up to run on the machine automatically. However, the server will automatically log me out after a few minutes of inactivity. Unfortunately the server admin (who has the admin rights to the server, which I don't) is reluctant to remove such restrictions "for security reasons".
Therefore, instead of me trying to fill up 10000 piece of paper getting a security exemption, I am just wondering if there is any tiny program that I can run on the server (either a script or some VB.NET code) that will trick the server into thinking I am constantly typing something even though I am not (For example, as if I am moving my mouse cursor once every 30 seconds or type any letter then erase it in notepad)?Note that since I do not have admin rights, any installation is certainly out of question, and the script, if any, can not require admin rights to run properly.

I'm attempting to communicate via USB to a hardware device. So far I can use CreateFile, ReadFile and WriteFile to communicate with the device efficiently, but occasionally the WriteFile call will hang because there is no device located at the port where it was installed. I have the WriteFile and ReadFile calls in a managed thread that I use the Join() method on to return control to the parent thread.

I created a server-client application using the asynchronous socket. I found the problem when closing a socket on the server, applications so closed. The procedure that I do to close the socket server is:
Terminate the listening thread. Close the client socket is still connected to the server. Close the server socket.
How to prevent the application is closed, when I close the server socket?
Protected Friend Sub CloseServerSocket(ByVal IPAddress As IPAddress, ByVal socketPort As Integer)
' Terminate the listening thread.

I have a service that scans network folders using a parallel.for method. However recently I am finding if I stop the service then while windows says the service is stopped the process is still running in task manager. However it is at 0 cpu and the memory does not change. If I try and end the task (even a force in command prompt) it just says access denied and i have to reboot the server. What would be the best way to make sure everything terminates? I thought of adding a global Boolean that in the stop procedure it turns true and part of my parallel code will check for that and call s.stop.

I have embedded the WMP control in my Visual Studio 2010 app which works on windows 7 (Framework 4.0), but installing the app on winXP, I get the following error:
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.WMPLib, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF.To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1.
Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging. To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog].
I guess this is a reference issue, but I have added references to WMP libraries (axinterop.wmplib.dll and interop.wmplib.dll). The WMP works on the XP machine, but not when called from my application.I have searched the web now for 5 days and changed references, and reinstalled the media player on the XP machine, but nothing works.
