Reading Someone Else's Code?

What are some practical ways to resolve legacy code in an n-tier architecture where all of the code is written in self-referencing web services? So far, much of the code is undocumented, uses old VB6 conventions, and there are very long procedures. What's the best way to approach, let's say, a change of business rules for such a large project without having reliable documentation?
I have limited access to the original developer of the code. How can I better document the process and complete my assignments, knowing that the code is changing daily and there are several dependencies for each method, there may be xml files, sql queries, and other unconventional resources being accessed.

I have been given the task of basically reading and writing to and from files. Below is the code from one sub:

So I'm trying out a concept tool of mine where I need to be able to read and write data from a database real easy. I've set up the form as I like and spread around different text boxes and dropdownboxes to read the data from the database. And I've got it all to work and all, but there's a small bug I don't fully understand why's there. Some textboxes don't update the text from the database.
But it seems as it only occurs if the data in the database is nothing. So the value from the last row is still hanging in the textbox and thus, clicking "Update" actually updates the value from the field from the last row, into the new row. Messing everything up.

I'm trying to follow the technique discribed by jmcilhinney in this HTML [URL]..I have all the drawing code in the .Paint event. Reading the above mentioned thread I would need .Invalidate(all or parts of the picturebox) AND .Update() in order to repaint (all or parts of) my PictureBox, however in my case it works without .Update. Am I doing something wrong?

I have created a project in VS2003.Net under VisualC++.-->Windows32 Application. I have to make an executable file that I will be able to run from different machine.The purpose of this file is to read some files that are in a particular directory. I will run the VSC++ .exe file from this folder. So I have to use some code to get the currentdirectory(directory where the current exe file is existing). After getting the directory, I have to find all the files in this directory that has an extension of .config.

I am extremly new to this concept of aps.net and vb. all the tutorials I see are c# based or very basic for vb. What I have is a contact forum with some basic information. I got the whole "check if the user has input information correctly down pat how ever Its this whole, connecting to a database (sdf) if in another vb file ands calling that method into aspx file and proessing forum input to say "take this, insert into bla..." I come from java, JSP and J2ee bak ground where its not that diffrent and I dont have all week to read books and take baby steps. I have until tuseday morning to finsih this. Right now I am as far as forum validation....

The drive is connected via USB and the problem I'm having is that, periodically, while my code is executing, the usb drive seems to disconnect and reconnect. (Nothing to do with the program, but the drive itself).I want to find a way to prevent these temporary drive reconnects from interrupting my code. IE, i want to insure that whatever read or write that is requested is actually executed even in the case of a temporary drive interruption.

I have a dictionary object (let's call it _do) I am using to cache some values for use in a multi-threaded program. I have a single controlling parent thread, with a timer function _doTimer() which can kick off child threads with a new instance of class MyThreadObject in each. My parent thread has _do as a property and with each time _doTimer() gets called, it may or may not repopulate _do depending on cacheflag settings. I pass a reference to _do to each instance of MyThreadObject and those threads at some point read the values of _do but DO NOT write to it.
What I want is to ensure that the child threads do not try and read _do whilst the parent thread is writing to it. Same thing but very slightly different -> I also don't want the parent thread to write to _do whilst the child threads are reading from it. However there is no problem with 1 child thread reading the values of _do at the same time as another child thread is reading the values - so ideally I do not want each child thread to completely lock out read access, only locking out Write access.. this code was not done by me originally and there are some thigns here i dont quite understand i have altered it a bit from my coworkers code to suit my data and it works. but too slow. and when i have 4000+kb excel files it might freeze altogether. ( I have checked tho that when and after this transposer runs it will still be within the excel row limit, i had done calculations before and made a macro to automatically split excel files based on number of columns and rows to make sure this is so ). This code seems to start out fast then goes slower the longer it runs. at least this is what it seems liek to me.

I recently found this code (provided for third party use on another VB site), however,ll of my attempts to insert it into a class library have failed.I open a new class library and past the code in, and immediately get several errors pertaining to how certain objects can't be found. I find it it is crucial to use this code, unless someone can suggest to me another example of existing code that will do the same thing: make a restricted textbox who imputs can be restricted, that can handle pasting, shortcuts, text property setting, and script-entered text.

I had a weird series of errors involving e.Graphics.DrawString() when painting a panel.I am using a barcode font [Code 128] with a library that converts text to the proper format for Barcode readers.That's fine, however, when I draw it to the panel, that's where things stop being fine:But, here's where things get funky. When I put it into a TextBox instead of drawing it via Graphics.DrawString(), everything is peachy:In fact, the TextBox one looks much better than the Graphics.DrawString() one! I realize this post is rather long, but I wanted to give all the information up front instead of people having to ask me for more information.At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message:
"Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
I have searched on Google for this whole message and found some references to this error, but I have done what they said worked for them and it did not fix the problem for me.When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it cannot install something because it is already installed:"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:

Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"? I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008. I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.
