I recently downloaded VB 2010 Express so i am quite new to the language, but i have worked with dark basic, which seems to b very similar.Anyway, my problem is that i cannot seem to correctly set out my array of a custom type/class. i am trying to create two arrays, one of available entities and another of selected entities of which the user selects the entities to be dealt with in irrelevant ways. i have creates a button (called test) which adds some entities to the available list and all the entities come back the same value but they shouldnt be as you'll c in the code. i have run the step into command a found that "available.item(#).Name = " will change all of the entity's names.As of current i am working with lists as the array kept asking for a 'new' statement but i couldnt figure out where to put it.[code]
View 7 RepliesI have been trying to solve a problem related to using RolesProviders in MVC.Basically I would like to an additional set of criteria to the roles table so that a user can switch roles based on what they are doing on the site.However as simple as it may sound its proving to be a nightmare. I cannot for love nor money come up with a solution. I have tried overloading the provider, creating extension methods (which never work with the Roles class) but finally I decided to simply create a reference to my own custom provider and just completely bypass the whole User, Roles class.Now I am getting a ridiculous error which states that I cannot cast MyProvider class to an instance of MyProvider class? All I am doing is calling the Roles.Provider method and casting its return value to my custom provider class (which inherits from RolesProvider). The asp.net forums are a waste of time since no one ever answers the questions and there are simply no examples of extending the Roles/Membership model without using SQL server.

I have a delegate and its event in C# as below:
public delegate UsernameCredentials UsernameRequiredEventHandler( object sender, string endpoint );
public event UsernameRequiredEventHandler UsernameRequired;
On Converting the above code in VB.Net as follow :
Public Delegate Function UsernameRequiredEventHandler(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal endpoint As String) As UsernameCredentials
Public Event UsernameRequired As UsernameRequiredEventHandler
I am getting error on the above line saying that "Events cannot be declared with a delegate type that has a return type".I understand that this is not supported in VB.Net.
I have a custom EditButton that shows a dialog for the user to select a value.This is used by an xtra grid as an editor for a cell.The user can click the cell editor, the dialog shows and they can select the item they want.

View 4 RepliesI'm making a class that reads a file and processes data in it, but I need some error handling. I'm giving it a constructor that takes a file location and processes that file. How can I make it so the constructor tells the program whether it found the file or not? Optimistically the program that calls this class would check for that first, but since I'm not going to be the only one that uses this class I'd like to know how to secure such a thing. It's probably bad practice to do this within the class, but I'd like to be sure it's as portable as possible.

So I have an application that uses a webservice, On the UI side the user picks a table which sends a request across the web to my webservice to return the fields of this table. So after this request is accomplished I have, on the webservice side a series of Name,Type Pairs that I need to serialize and send back to my client. I could use a List(of String()) to send the values back but I want to use a List(of Custom_Class) instead because later I have to do this on a much larger scale and I want to learn on this simpler version.

I'm learning .NET and I've got a question about user controls. I'm using VS 2010.. I've created an user control, which contains a textbox (code), a button and a label. When you fill in the textbox, the system searches of the codes exists, if so, the description is showed in the label, else it's cleared. When you click the button, a form opens with a datagrid where you can select a code. When you select a code in the datagrid, the code textbox should be filled in with the selected code. How do you return the selected value to the custom control? I've created a public property in the custom control, but i can't access it.
View 1 Repliesif its possible to have a msgbox cleared without having the user do it manually? what would be my best option here?
View 8 RepliesIn my project (which I inherited from someone) there are a lot of functions like:
Public Function DoSomething(ByVal s As String)
' Do something to public properties
End Function
And they are called like this:
DoSomething(s)
So the return value is ignored (which is object, as I see in the docs). Is it safe to change all these functions to Subs? Could I break something which isn't so obvious?
How do i index a return type so that it returns a value? the error is coming up for the word right.[code]...
View 10 RepliesI would like to have a function(of T) that returns a list(of T) that is assignable to a variable of list(of T).For Example:
the variable:
Private _StandardCodes As List(Of StandardCode)
the assignment:[code]....
I'm getting the error "Type paramater 'T' for ... cannot be inferred", as a result I have to use a comparable function to return a list(of Object) and then do:
_StandardCodes = (From x In AMExtensions.queryObject(GetType(StandardCode), "StandardCode") _
Select CType(x, StandardCode)).ToList
I was once using a program that was under beta, so the creator added a nifty feature. You could enter any vb.net code into a textbox, and when you pressed the button next to it, that code was executed. For example, you could type MsgBox("hello") into the textbox, click the button, and it would run that code as if you actually put it in the source code and ran it. I've googled so many different phrases trying to find out how to do this, but I can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas or resources I can look at?
View 1 RepliesI know a little about using a user specified type IE IIf(Of ReturnType)(ByVal expression as Boolean, ByVal TruePart As ReturnType, ByVal FalsePart As ReturnType) As ReturnType...Which works, however I've been trying to get this to work, but can't..
Protected Function InverseSign(Of ReturnType)(ByVal value As Double) As ReturnType
Dim result As String
Select Case Math.Sign(value)
Case -1: result = "+" & Math.Abs(value).ToString()
[code]....
Using try cast just gives me the error saying ReturnType has no class-constraints? whatever that means..But my goal here is to be able to return either a string or double.. However every method I've tried to convert my result string to the ReturnType doesn't work.I've also tried simply overloading the function, but I can't because they only differ by return type. So that didn't work either.
I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 application in which I am creating a custom action filter. This filter sits on the controllers in the application and verifies from the database whether that function is currently available.[code]....

View 1 RepliesI have a base class with a static function that returns a typed dataset. I have several classes that inherit the base class with a non-static function that returns the same typed dataset. On these methods I get the 'Return type of parameter yadda

I have a program which connects to an FTP server. my program needs to retreive the directory list of the server. I am doing this in the style of an OpenfileDialog control. now I can get all the information and fill the listview control. however the function I use to fill the listview control with the directory listing and file listing, returns a list(of string)
Because of this I can't determine if a file is a file and if a folder is a folder. I myself know which of them are because while getting the directorylists I check for a string value of D which means directory. if it doesn't have a D then it's a file.
The project I'm working on is a Multichoice RadioButton quiz with answers and percentintegers. At the end there is a MsgBox that gives the number of answers counted 'correct'and the percent 'correct'. Also after you press the confirm button on that MsgBox it emails the results to the built in information given on the SMTP information. What I am trying to do now is show the input typed into the textbox on FormA in the MsgBox at the very end.
