Returning Reference To A Local Variable?

is this safe (I know it works, but is it safe)? Is it returning a reference to a local variable, wich falls out of scope as soon as the function returns?

.net - Don't Create Local Variable To Hold The Reference Of The Object?

Nov 17, 2010

How does the GC dispose objects created in the following 2 scenarios?

1)

Private Function DoSomething() As Boolean
Return New DatabaseManager().Insert()
End Function

2)

Private Function DoSomething() As Boolean
Dim mngr As New DatabaseManager()
Return mngr.Insert()
End Function

In Option 1, I don't create local variable to hold the reference of the object. In Option 2, I hold the reference in local variable.What option is better and why? (if any)

Here is my code for all 3 forms.

Reference A Dll With Copy Local = False

May 28, 2009

I have a VB.NET project which references a dll of another program. dll file location is something like "C:Program FilesAppNameAppName.dll" and on my project's references tab the dll's path shows this. When the copy local property is true, everythings works fine. When it is false, I get a runtime error saying dll cannot be found. The other program is a restricted access application and I can not distribute the dll with my project. How can I force my project to look for dll under "C:ProgramFilesAppName"? I didn't have this issue with VB6.0.

Defaulting A Reference's Copy Local To False?

Jan 11, 2010

Is there a way to default the Copy Local property of references that I add to my projects? I figure there has to be some sort of method since adding a reference to a VB componentdefaults to False. (for example, start a project as a class library and then adda reference to System.Windows.Forms, it will default Copy Local False.) Is that somethingin the DLL's settings or configuration that I could replicate in my DLLs to force that

Process.Start - Reference To The Local File

I have an application that that uses process.start. It works fine on my development machine...but not on an installed machine....at least not for a local file. The following illustrates my problem...the reference to the url works fine and every time. However, the reference to the local file may work the First time but on any following attempts will close the application with a WindowsApplication1 error. Since it can find the file occasionally it is not a file problem.

Use CType To Change An Object Variable "obj" To Custom Class That Reference Using A String Variable Like Obj.GetType.Name?

Feb 9, 2011

The code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.

Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

For Each Variable Acting Like A Local Var?

Apr 21, 2011

I stumbled upon something i don't quite see the logic of. Let's ork with following piece of code:

For Each ds As DerivedScale In List
If ds.ScaleID = scaleId Then
ds.ScaleID = ds.ScaleID + scaleStep

[Code].....

This piece is written for 2 records to change place and change the sequence number (scaleid). The arrow indicates where the issue occurs. The item "ds" is replaced by the object 1 indexnumber higher/lower. This does however not effect that object in the List. So when i check, item ds isn't set.

However, when i look at ds.ScaleId = ds.ScaleID + scaleStep, this is reflected in the List.

So what I am wondering is: is "ds" acting like a local variable here, and can i only make changes to it's properties?

Global Vs Local Variable

Mar 22, 2010

I'm writing a subneting calculator in VB.NET.I'm using the IDE SharpDevelop.Well my problem is I'm using a function to do some calculations and then to figure out the class of the IP addresses.Well I pass a variable from the subroutine, that is accessed when a button is clicked, to the function then the variable is passed back to the subroutine and then the variable is passed again to another function but when it reaches this second function it doesn't retain the value it was given in the first function.I'm not sure if I'm just passing the variable wrong or if this is how it works.I know I can make this work probably by using global variables but I'm not sure if this is proper. So my ultimate question is what is the difference between local and global variables besides just scope and should I try and use one more than the other.

Instantiate Local Variable By Value?

Jan 7, 2010

I sort of understand why this is happening, but not entirely. I have a base class with a Shared (Static) variable, declared like so:
Public Shared myVar As New MyObject(arg1, arg2)

In a method of a derived class, I set a local variable like so:
Dim myLocalVar As MyObject = myVar

Now when I do something like myLocalVar.Property1 += value, the value in Property1 persists to the next call of that method! I suppose I get why it would be happening; myVar is being set by reference instead of by value, but I've never encountered anything like this before. Is there any way (other than my workaround which is to just create a new object using the property values of myVar) to create myLocalVar by value?

IDE :: Visual Studio 2010 Reference Path To Local Assembly Won't Change?

Jul 20, 2010

We have upgraded our project from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010 without any issues until now. Our project contains a folder call Libraries which contains different versions of Oracle ODP.NET DLL's as well as different versions of Telerik DLL's. Our project contains references to one of the versions of each. The problem is once we remove the reference and re-add it by browsing to the new version, again inside the Libraries folder inside the project, it adds the reference, but to the same version we just removed. We can even copy the DLL to our desktop, remove the reference and add to the new one on our desktop and it still will point to the Libraries folder version???. The only we we can actual change the reference to the new DLL is by manually changing the path in the .vbproj file, which is obviously not going to work for us. The same behaviour worked perfectly in VS 2008. We switch our references quite often, when new versions come out, but also far more often to QA different versions of ODP.NET and Telerik Control DLL's, so manually editing the .vbproj file is becoming quickly cumbersome. If I browse to a specific version at a specific path, Visual Studio should ALWAYS do what I'm telling it to do..

I did some seaching and came across a few other people with the same issue. This better not be as designed and if it's a bug, which I believe it to be, when will it be fixed?[URL]..

How To Add Event Handler To Local Variable

Apr 25, 2012

I have a form in VB.NET that is used as a dialog in a mainform. Its instances are always locally defined, there's no field for it. When the user clicks the OK button in the dialog, it will fire an event with exactly one argument, an instance of one of my classes. Since it is always a local variable, how can I add an event handler for that event?

Code for the event, a field in MyDialog:
public Event ObjectCreated(ByRef newMyObject as MyObject)
Code for the main form to call dialog : (never mind the syntax)
Dim dialog As New MyDialog()
dialog.ShowDialog(Me)
AddHandler ObjectCreated, (what do I put here?) //Or how do I add a handler?

.net - Declare A Local Variable Whenever Access A Property?

say i have an auto property Public Property P As Integer and everytime I want to read this variable P in a function, i will declare a local variable as such: dim _p = P then read _p instead of P.
