SMTP Works In Solution But Fails As Imported Class?

Nov 13, 2009

Enviro: 2007 Exchange Server, 2 Intranet servers (1 deploy, 1 dev) running .NET 2.0 app - all within same network / behind firewall. I am working on a legacy app by our previous web guy, when our sysadmin upgraded to exchange 2007 and put it on a new server all of the mail functions in old app broke. Had to upgrade to .NET 2.0 (from 1.x) and nothing worked untill I tried new SMTP code in a local function in the codebehind of a page of the app instead of calling a class, as follows:

Function SendNow(ByVal strFrom As String, ByVal strTo As String, ByVal strSubject As String, ByVal strBody As String) As Object
Dim msg As New MailMessage()
Dim smtp As SmtpClient

[code]....

So the above works fine, in that file. The problem is that the app was designed to call a class that resides on the dev server. When I move this same code into the class on the dev server I get transport errors. I think this has to do with the fact that we're using integrated authentication with impersonation=true and it seems to get dropped due to the class being on a different server (even though it's behind our firewall).

I could either try moving the classes to the production server or somehow keep the authentication in the class working through the hops. Either way I need to keep the class because it's referenced all over the place (in more than just this app). I am not that savvy in .NET and I cannot figure out where the setting is within the app that defines where the class is imported from. It just seems to be available no matter where the app is deployed. (Working files are on same server as classes, then publish the app to production server).

Referring To A 2nd Imported Project, Within The Same Solution?

Jan 23, 2011

I Imported 2 programs that I made into one solution. I made a "BIG" main menu (new windows form), put two buttons. I code one button to open up the first project (that works fine). I code the other button to open the project I imported, however it says that the name is not declared. Am I doing something wrong?

here is my code for the "BIG" main menu:

[Code]...

now only the "Original name of first project" appears to be not declared, if I delete "Original name of first project", then "the project I imported"is not declared and so forth. Note: These are not the exact names I called my forms. I'm just trying to explain it clearer.

AddHandler Fails But Assignment Works?

Dec 1, 2011

This assignment works for me TryCast(Me.NamingContainer, LDHello).ToggleChartConfigurationSections = AddressOf LD_SayHello whereas Dim objLDHello As LDHello = TryCast(Me.NamingContainer, LDHello) AddHandler objLDHello.LoveAndLoveOnly, AddressOf LDSayHello fails with an error message like LoveAndLoveOnly is not an event of Universal.LDHello. Visual Studio intellisense is able to pickup the event whereas the background vbc and build compiler are failing. When I need to stack multiple subscribers to the event I need to use AddHandler right?

SendInput Fails But Autohotkey Works?

Jun 11, 2011

I am replacing an AutoHotkey script with a VB.net application. Part of the script involves sending keystrokes to an active application. VB uses SendInput and does send the keystrokes, but the application doesn't "get" them, but when AutoHotkey sends the same key to the same application, it works. I have verified that VB is indeed sending the keys properly. Does anyone know how to imitate the autohotkey Send function?

.net - Unit Test Fails, Tested Code Works?

Aug 14, 2009

I have a simple unit test which tests that a validation function picks up a specific validation issue. The validation item returns a simple object with Item & Message properties. I've written a unit test for this function but this always fails even though I know the function works as expected.

<TestMethod()> Public Sub ContractNote_ValidateForManualInputTest_TradeOrderValueComparison()
'Can't get this test to work even though validation works!
Dim CN As ContractNote = New ContractNote
Dim Trade As New TradeOrder

[code].....

I've implemented IComparable on ValidationItem (I have a separate unit test which confirms this works). Am I Using CollectionAssert correctly?

WebDAV & Exchange 2003 - Works In Debug, Fails Without?

Sep 23, 2010

I am writing some code in VB.Net under .NET 2.0 which interfaces with MS Exchange 2003.Because of the Exchange 2003 "requirement" I am forced to write this code using WEBDAV.The code itself is replicating, to some degree,a schedule management process. It's creating Appointments on the Exchange Server in response to inputs from the user and managing it's data internally in a SQL Server database. The problem situation is this: A new person is assigned to be in charge of a meeting. The requirement says the program should generate a meeting cancellation request to the person removed from the meeting (if such a person existed) and a meeting request sent to the new person. In the case of there being an existing person, what appears to happen is this:

The meeting cancellation request

gets sent Exchange barfs and returns status code 500 (internal server error) during the set of requests which send the meeting request to the new person. However! While debugging this particular scenario, it works just fine for me, if I step through the code in the Visual Studio debugger. Left to it's own devices, it fails every time.Just for yuk's sake, I added a Thread.Sleep(500) to the part after sending the cancellation request, and Exchange doesn't barf anymore...

So, my question! If adding a Thread.Sleep to the code causes this error to go away, a race condition is implied, no? But, my code is running under a web application and is a totally single threaded process, from start to finish. The web requests I am sending are all in synchronous mode so this shouldn't be a problem. [code]....

...but a lot of the implementation details are hidden here, as I wrote a set of classes to interface with Exchange WebDAV.

SMTP Email Client Fails On Local Machine Needs To Run On Client

Jun 29, 2010

I have an application that takes a series of reports and sends them as attachments in an email to a specified group of email accounts.

When I run the Java version of this using apache commons and the same setting, the email is sent. However, when I run the VB.NET version of the code, it fails on my local machine and on the client machine.

I have a VB.NET web application running on a server that uses similar code. I tried that code locally and it fails. Yet, the web application is working perfectly.

Why is it that the Java application can send the email, but the .NET application cannot?[code]....

.NET Class Inherits A Base Class And Implements An Interface (works In C#)?

Apr 9, 2010

I am trying to create a class in VB.NET which inherits a base abstract class and also implements an interface. The interface declares a string property called Description. The base class contains a string property called Description. The main class inherits the base class and implements the interface. The existence of the Description property in the base class fulfills the interface requirements. This works fine in C# but causes issues in VB.NET.

Referencing An Object (class) Within A Thread Fails

Jun 8, 2012

Referencing an object (class) within a thread fails

I have an object ("a vb class") that needs to run on a separate thread and communicate with the U/I.

Even using sample code, I cannot get the object to run within a thread. I demonstrate this problem with two examples. The first calls a function within the form and it works perfectly. The second creates an object and performs the same calls, but fails.

example #1 [working] (Called within a form)
Private Delegate Sub FuctionToBeRunInThreadDelegate
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

[Code]....

SUMMARY: When the thread creates the object, it appears that the object is not actually running inside of a thread or else form.InvokeRequired would be true. I have other more complex examples where this is strongly verified and evidenced, but I provided these two as a very simple demonstration of my problem. How can I have a thread "own" a series of individual objects so that the objects are run asynchronously and can independently report back to the U/I?

VS 2008 Server Program Can Receive SMTP Messages From Other SMTP Servers

Aug 14, 2009

I'm using the TcpClient and TcpListener classes to read/write to the network when a request comes in on port 25. All I'm trying to do at the moment is make it so that my server program can receive SMTP messages from other SMTP servers. I've tested in Telnet - if I connect to my own IP on port 25 and type EHLO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, DATA etc then all works as it should and the details I entered are logged by the program (it doesnt do anything about delivering these details/email yet).all looks good... but then when I try and just send an email to my domain from my work account I can see that a connection is made to my program and the string "EHLO workdomain.com " is received by my program - my program responds to the remote SMTP server with "250-mydomain.com Hello" and then a CrLF and then "250-OK". After that point however, my app does not receive anything further at all from the server at work. I'm guessing I am doing something wrong with the data I'm returning when it sends EHLO but can anyone point me in the correct direction?

I was using telnet to test with, it seems that I have made it work only with telnet. In telnet each time I type a key the data is passed to the server, however with a real SMTP server it just sends each entire command in one go. So after altering my server a little I can now get it to respond with the 250-OK which I thought it already was doing.. but it still doesnt work. The remote server just sends EHLO and then thats it nothing more.Something interesting, at the moment I am ending all of my responses to the remote server with VbLf - if I change this to VbCrLf (which is what I believe it is meant to be according to the SMTP standard) then I get an infinite amount of empty strings sent to my program (or perhaps some other character that just shows as an empty string in intellisense when stepping through the code). Changing it back to just vbLf or ControlChars.Lf makes it go back to just sending EHLO and then nothing else..

I'm guessing this is because you can't serialize the form that is attached to the class or something, but I really don't know what I'm doing. Can I serialize all of the objects contained in my Form1 class somehow, without getting this error? I don't want to store any data about the form controls, I just need to save all the objects that I've defined at the top of the Form1 class.

.net - Different Increase In Email Size Using SMTP Class To Send An Email As Opposed To Outlook?

Dim msg As New System.Net.Mail.MailMessage(req.EmailFrom, req.EmailTo)
Dim att As New System.Net.Mail.Attachment("C:Documents and SettingsmichaelrDesktop1216259.pdf")

.Attachments.Add(att)

The file size of the attachment is 396KB, upon the recipient receiving the email outlook shows the file size as 543Kb. Strange thing is if I send an email with the same attachment using outlook the file size is 396Kb.I understand that file sizes can increase due to the attachment being base 64 encoded as opposed to just raw binary. What I am failing to see is why outlook send a file which is 396KB in size but in code when sending it, the same file is 543Kb.
