I have recently programmed a site that enables a user to upload and download files to and from an FTP site.
I now wish to take it further by having an email sent out to a specific email account (Outlook 2010) confirming that a file has been uploaded or downloaded along with the file name.[code]...
I want to develop an app thru vb.net to attach and send a doc file to my email. Lets say in my Temp folder I have 2 doc files. I want the program to attach those 2 files and send it to my email. Is this possible to write an app in VB?

The file size of the attachment is 396KB, upon the recipient receiving the email outlook shows the file size as 543Kb. Strange thing is if I send an email with the same attachment using outlook the file size is 396Kb.I understand that file sizes can increase due to the attachment being base 64 encoded as opposed to just raw binary.What I am failing to see is why outlook send a file which is 396KB in size but in code when sending it, the same file is 543Kb.
how would i implement a way that i would not hard code the email message that the application send to email recipients? how will i also include email message formatting (text in bold, italic, etc.)?

I've learned that if you're trying to send mail, you need an SMTP server... I found this list here but every one of them I've tried yields the same "Failure sending mail" error.

Is the problem that I need to show "credentials" (i.e. user/pass)? If so, what would those credentials be? Can I use my yahoo email SMTP server with my login info to do it? And is this all I'd need to add to add the credentials?

I need a snippet to check file for validity (I'm allowing users to upload xml files). So I need to check whether uploaded file is XML. The best I can think of is just check if extension is ".xml". What if its replaced?

View 3 Replieshow I could make an application in visual basic 2008/vb2005 that detects when a new file is downloaded. One of my old time friends created the same app with visual basic 2008. It notifys you when your attempting to download a file. For e.g: I try to download "aim6.exe"
it will show a message: "C:UsersMATTST~1AppDataLocalTempsXx0Fd31.exe.part is attempting to be downloaded"

I have an xml file that I download from a secure site every 5 minutes, I have the application set to download at 3 minutes after the hour so it runs at 3, 8, 13, and so on. The file is supposed to be there within a minute after the 5 minute increment has occured however this is not always the case, so I changed the download time from 2 minutes after the hour to 3 minutes. However I am still running into issues with it not being there even then. What I want to do is validate the downloaded xml file to ensure that the data is there and if it is not wait 10 seconds and rerun the download again.
if the file is valid it will call the SQL import Sub (),if not it needs to delete the existing file and rerun the download sub again.The problem I am having is that all the examples that I have seen when I google are for validating the xml file prior to upload or upon the xml files creation.

This method will only verify the file's extension, not its actual type. Once I receive the file, I want to examine its contents to determine what it really is, in this case image only.
How do I examine the file content being uploaded?
I'm trying to get a specific error message posted when a user tries to upload a file that exceeds the maxrequestlength of 10MB for my asp:fileupload object. However, adding the onError attribute to my fileupload object, the user does not get the error I want displayed; the page just crashes. Setting customerrors mode to on and setting up a redirect page doesn't work either; the page still crashes. How am I supposed to get the page to display a specific error without crashing?

- connect to a webservice
- Upload/download files through WebDAV.
Seems to work fine, but I am having an issue with debugging. Since WebDAV is installed on the server, i have to publish the webservices there aswell, as the webservice is going to access the file locally (serverside) after upload to the server. This makes it impossible for me to debug the webservices. When i switch to the local services for debug, they cannot reach the file that was uploaded to a remote location (the server). Is it possible to install a local WebDAV server, even if i do not have IIS set up? Just for testing purposes?
I am writing a code that downloads alot of information from different servers. Puts the information in an excel spreadsheet, saves the sheet, and uploads it to an FTP page for each server. The code is running into an OutOfMemoryException. Is there a way to clear the memory after each servers file is uploaded to the FTP?Or is there another way to fix the problem with out adding memory to the server the code is running on?

View 2 RepliesI am working on a website at the moment which is displaying a strange bug with generated word documents. The site has a feature on it which allows the user to download a word document containing information related to their visit. This file is generated via some vb.net code and takes an xml template of the final document and inserts the relevant content required.
The strange behaviour is that on some machines the .doc file generated displays fine and on others it displays as XML when opened in Word. Both behaviours have been seen in the same version of Office (2003) but on seperate machines. My question is really whether the error lies with the set up of word on the individual machines, or whether there is an error in the code.

Its a one file application - so its a simple process. Its just for the PC's inside the business.Currently, I think it will be easiest to get the updater to check a text file uploaded onto our server, and determine whether the running version number is above or below that. The new application will then be downloaded from a simple http link.
-I have an interface designed, so that will be attached to my request.
-Is it possible for the updater to update itself? How could I request that?
-Is there any way I can ask that the link which the updated file will be downloaded from is definitely hidden from the user?
-Will the developer incorporate error handling for if the program is running when the updater runs? How do I ask for that?
Is there a better way for the updating process to run? What other things should I ask the developer to include?

I have a process serves as an application updater.It checks it's local cache of files and compares this against list of files online.On it's first run there are no files in the local cache and it therefore downloads ~100 of these files.[code]This appears to work very well, since Explorer confirms that all files are extracted and available.However when I later run this process again, it cannot verify the existence of 6 of these files and therefore tries to download them despite the fact that they are clearly both present and up to date.The offending code is a simple File.Exists call which appears to deny the local existence of these files, and therefore tries to get them again.The system continues to work well, but over time the continual downloading of these 6 files is going to get kind of silly.
