As you can imagine this causes an error as the two " are not escaped. The issue is " doesn't work either. I imagine this is because Regex has special meanings for such symbols. So my question is should I use the ASCII codes for the the " and the other " ?
I ran into a problem. Wrote the following code snippet:

After writing this I realized it becomes its own problem. The function is supposed to make information safe for HTML and SQL injection (there are other methods too, parameterized queries, etc but that's beside the point). However what happens, is that it first replaces < with & lt; and then proceeds to replace the newly written string again as every replace string has &, # and ; signs in it.
I thought about using a regex for this, but I couldn't find any decent Visual Basic examples that were simple enough. Edit: I was sure there would be a "smart" easy way to do this, but I guess there are no common methods available after all. The re-arranging the problem cases first is the obvious solution here,As for parametirized queries, checking back I see my English doesn't come out as intended. I meant to say that I'm already using them, that this problem here is specific to prevent all manner of html-injection and possible sql-injection using the same strings elsewhere later.

I am using Microsoft.VisualBasic.Fileio.TextFieldParser to parse a CSV file that was created with Excel 2003. The parser is working great with the exception that it is converting extended ascii values to question marks! So if the file content was:

The TextFieldParser is returning
? 3
I have tried all of the encodings in the System.Text.Encoding package with no luck. I thought I had it with UTF7 but it was dropping other characters like replacing the + sign with a space.

I would like to pass a whitespace character by using the System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(" "), and System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(" ") , where " " is the whitespace Character required. What do I need to type (" ") to get a whitespace character passed.?
View 6 RepliesSo I have an ASP.Net (vb.net) application. It has a textbox and the user is pasting text from Microsoft Word into it. So things like the long dash (charcode 150) are coming through as input. Other examples would be the smart quotes or accented characters. In my app I'm encoding them in xml and passing that to the database as an xml parameter to a sql stored procedure. It gets inserted in the database just as the user entered it.
The problem is the app that reads this data doesn't like these characters. So I need to translate them into the lower ascii (7bit I think) character set. How do I do that? How do I determine what encoding they are in so I can do something like the following. And would just requesting the ASCII equivalent translate them intelligently or do I have to write some code for that?
Also maybe it might be easier to solve this problem in the web page to begin with. When you copy the selection of characters from Word it puts several formats in the clipboard. The straight text one is the one I want. Is there a way to have the html textbox get that text when the user pastes into it? Do I have to set the encoding of the web page somehow?

I am having an issue where I am using regex.Replace to replace part of a string. The basic idea is that I want to capture the beginning of the string then replace the end of the string with a value from code. For an example pretend I have a string that says "Test Number " followed by number and I want to increment that number. I capture the "Test Number " but when I try to concatenate that capture with the new number it treats the capture ($1) as a literal and replaces the entire string with $1[new number].

This will output "We are on Test Number 2", as expected. how I can use a variable in the replacement string portion of the Regex.Replace when including a captured group?

I'm creating a program in VB.NET to output multiple images. Some images will have the same file name. If there is multiple files with the same name I want to add "_1_" to the end of the file name. If the "_1_" file already exists I want to increment the 1 to be "_2_". If this file already exists I want to continue incrementing the number ultil it doesn't exist. I'm a noob to RegEx and I've tested out about 5 different RegEx "builders" but each of them require you to navigate through the options to build the Regex...each of them has failed when I try to use them.Is there an application out there free/paid where you select the line you want to grab and the RegEx is auto generated from that highlight rather than having to try to build the line of code? I have a web service I am working on. Recently I made a whole bunch of changes and now, although I can successfully compile it, when I run it my break-points will not work. The red dot turns into a circle and floating the mouse over it reveals the message:

For my coursework, I am making a maths quiz which allows the teacher to add or edit questions and solutions. then these solutions and quetsions form a quiz that students can access.But I dont know how to allow the teacher to use the weird maths symbols.
