Side Effects Of Defining A Structure Inside A Class?

View 1 RepliesIs there any cause that this property's value isn't false by default?. When you work with threads, you always require to update user interface from the child thread, I think that may be false is not the default value because of its side effects, wich I don't know.

I defined the following extension method to reduce duplicate code:

Currently, if I have different classes containing functions etc, I would structure them all in the 1 VB file titled whatever the main Class is. For example:
[Code]...
However, the problem with this is the file can become 1000s of lines long making hard to find portions of code. Is there a way I can store SubClass in a file such as MainClass.SubClass.vb so that its easier to locate classes? Or is there a better, more standard, way of doing this?
Module Module1
Public Structure structure1
Public TRANS() As structure2
End Structure
Public Structure structure2
Public X() As Integer
End Structure
End Module
I have created a class for a Sports Facility. A facility has a Name, Status, Notes, etc as members of the class. This works well, I can create a new instance of an exisitng Sports Facility from the database, create a new instance, etc. All working well.What I am stuck on is accessing a list of Sports Facilities. I know I can create a new list by doing
Dim List As New List(Of Facility)
For Each fRow As DataRow In ds.Tables("Facilities").Rows
List.Add(New Facility(fRow.Item("FacilityID"))
Next
I have the following code:
Option Explicit On
Imports System.DirectoryServices

I have .cls files that have attributes for XML files, and i would like to refer to them in the main body of my code without having to define each one as a class in the code as this would be writing them twice. How can i refer to a .cls file in a vb.net form? If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room
View 5 RepliesHow do I define the controls from another class? Here is my code (highlighted) -
Imports System.Windows.Forms
Namespace Bryanlgh.Echo.Views
Namespace Bryanlgh.Core.Tasks
[Code]....
I also tried using Imports Bryanlgh.Echo.Views instead of Namespace and it also came up with 3 error messages -
1. Namespace or type specified in the Imports ' Bryanlgh.Echo.Views' doesnt contain a public member or cannot be found.
2. Name 'cboPcpMd is not declared.
3. Name 'cboPhysicianPerforming' is not declared
How should I define these controls?
I'm new to VB 2008 after having spent a long time with VB6, so I apologize if this is a stupid question. But I'd really like to have this straightened out.
Let's say I have a pretty large structure that has lots of properties.
Code:
Now say that I want an internal database with about 10 instances of this structure total, describing, say, 10 different products that a store sells. When these values are loaded from a database, they remain totally static. (However, they can be different each time a program loads)
Now say that I have a class. Each instance of this class is a type of that BaseProduct structure. Meaning, each instance of the class pertains to one of the 10 types of products that the store sells. However, this class has additional properties that pertain specifically to each instance, which are not static.
Code:
Now, the problem here is... If I have 200 different transactions, each one contains an instance of BaseProduct. BaseProduct is HUGE, and is largely redundant (only 10 types possible), so I think it's a little silly to include a whole copy of it with EVERY transaction. However, the Transaction class really needs information regarding the base product it pertains to. Is there a way to, instead of declaring a New BaseProduct in the Transaction class, to simply make one of the properties of the Transaction class a pointer to a BaseProduct variable?
In VB6, I would accomplish this by making a BaseProduct(10) array, and then giving each Transaction an ID number referring to an entry in that array. But in VB 2008, using class structure, this is impossible. I can't define the BaseProduct(10) array outside of a class in a namespace, and if I define it in the actual application's form, then the class loses modularity since it relies on the application that's using it.
How do I apply effects such as a DropShadowEffect class to a TextBlock Run element in WPF?
Think of it as a way of highlighting certain areas of text in a TextBlock where the Run element is located, but applying an individual effect to that area instead.
i am comfortable with class, namespace ,Sub ,Function ,Properties ...and so on. i studied about Custom Controls and Extension methods. There i found something new so called Attribute that are placed before classes and Functions definitions.[code...]

The XML document looks like this:

<artists xmlns:opensearch="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/" xmlns="http://www.spotify.com/ns/music/1">

I'm trying to create a structure and inside it put an array of "Genres". This is my structure declaration:
Structure BookData
Dim strGenres() As String
[code]....
But I keep getting an error with the .strGenres(5). VB is telling me "End of statement expected"
I'm sure there are several ways of achieving my goal but I am after opinions on what you think is the best option. I'm writing a vb.net application which (amongst other thinks) interfaces with media players in the home. Because there are different types of media playersI'm trying to structure it so each type of media player has it's own class which interfaces to a management class which sits on top of all the different devices types.
The device classes are responsible for discovering the phsyical devices and returning that information up to the management class. A device class may be responsible for monitoring 1 or more physical devices so..

I have an enum that I want to give some methods. I thought about changing the enum to a structure so I could add properties, but then the enum is a value inside the structure (not the structure itself), so this would affect comparisons and such. (For example, instead of writing
EnumVariable=EnumConstant,
Now it is
StructureVariable.EnumValue=EnumConstant).
At least, this is my understanding of it. It seems awkward to have to do this for such a simple scenario, so is it possible give enums properties, yet still have them treated as before? I've thought maybe I need to create a new valuetype from scratch, but I've never done that before.
Hey everyone - I am working on a project and having a hard time getting my head around serparating the business logic from the rest - In the course I am doing we covered it breifly - but I am a tad cunfussed as how to let a class do the mathatical side of things for me - What I want it for my main form to have no formulas in it (which is the essence of seperating the business logic as far as I am aware) - From the code below I want the main form to grab the data entered in the textbox and for that to be sent to the class and then the approprite value to be returned.[code]As much as this is related to the course I am doing - it is not work to be submitted for grading - It is just an extra exercises for my own learning and satisfaction.
View 2 RepliesCreate a class named Service. Inside the Service class, declare a class variable named Started. The datatype of this variable is Boolean.Public Class Service Dim started as Boolean End Class Create a class named Server. Inside the Server class, declare a dynamic array that can contain elements of the type Service.(Note: For convenience, both the array and the variable Started can be accessible from a client program that creates an instance of Server and Service respectively)
Create a constructor for the Service class. When the constructor is executed, it will set the value of the class variable Started to True. Create two new classes: WebServer and DatabaseEngine. Both of these classes inherit from the class Service. Inside the Service class, declare a Sub procedure (method) named Terminate. This method should display the following text Service stopping in a message box when executed.This method can be overridden in classes that inherit from Service class.
Inside both the WebServer and DatabaseEngine class, override the method Terminate inherited from their base class Service. Both methods should first call the base class Terminate method. The messages Web server stopping and Database engine stopping should also be displayed in a message box when the Terminate method for the WebServer and DatabaseEngine are called respectively. These messages should only be displayed if the Started variable inherited from their base class is not equal to False.
Inside the Server class, declare a method named Shutdown. This method does not return any value. When executed, it will call the Terminate method for each of the Service instances (if any) in the arrServices
array. You should call the Terminate method within a For Each loop that loops through the elements of the arrServices array.
In the Sub Main method, create an instance of the class Server. Set the size of the arrServices array in
your Server instance to contain 2 elements. Create first a WebServer instance and then a DatabaseEngine
instance into this array. Call the Shutdown method from your Server instance.

I have a 'property management class' that contains several functions and properties. I have several other classes that use the 'management class' as a property to derive the value of several of its other properties.Is there a way for me to reference the outer class from the 'management class' functions without having to pass it as a parameter? I ask because several different classes can have this 'management class' as a property and am having a hard time typing the parameter.

View 1 RepliesI have a "partial" class in VB.NET. Half of it is auto generated by a code generation tool. That half implements INotifyPropertyChanged, so any properties in that part of the partial class raise the PropertyChanged event.In my "custom" part of the class, I declare another property that depends on one of the properties in the auto-generated side. Therefore, when that auto-generated property changes, I also want to raise a PropertyChanged event on my custom property that depends on it.
If I go into the generated part of the class and raise the event there, that will get overwritten if I ever re-generate that part, so I don't want to do that. I would rather add an event handler in my side of the partial class that checks if the generated property changed, and if so, raise another event for my custom property.
[Code]...
I'm assuming it's because normally you'd use the WithEvents keyword to tell the compiler that you're subscribing to events from that object. I don't have a clue how to do this inside of the class that's actually raising the event, or if that's even possible.
If my namespace is Company.Application.EDI.Acknowledgement and if I stick with theprogramming practice of one class per file then should my class be saved asacknowledgement.vb? Are there any gotchas that will come up?

Haven't coded in a while, and ran into a wall when setting up my program data structure
So I have something like this in a class file;
Public Class X
Public Stuff as Integer
Public Stuff1 as String
[Code].....
I want to structure my program this way, what's the best way to go about that?
I want to access multiple data types in the same array from within a class, as it should be a subset of my base class etc... and want to be able to change the size of the array
Or is this class array within class nesting a dead end?
In a recent project I was working I created a structure in my class to solve a problem I was having, as a colleague was looking over my shoulder he looked derisively at the structure and said "move it into a class". I didn't have any argument for not moving it into a class other than I only need it in this class but this kind of falls down because couldn't I make it a nested class?
View 5 RepliesThis is purely a coding practice question concerning VB.NET structures. Where do you keep one?As an example, I've created a structure for the simple purpose of keeping information organized, I'd like this structure to be stand-alone, not belonging to any class so I wouldn't have to access it through SomeClass.MyStructure but rather simply MyStructure. So, do I keep it in a separate class and import it into my namespace? Do I keep it in a module (Static class, essentially)? Do I just make a separate VB.NET code file and place is there (I would like it to live in a separate file). Just to clarify, I need this structure to be accesses by the whole application, not just a single class.
