System Registry Referencing?
Feb 11, 2010
I have a program that write a key to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER (it stores an email address there & I call it later to send to that address)On form load a dialog opens & asks for email address.Everything OK on testing the program, when I deploy the application the dialog doesn't open. I assume this has got to be something to do with what references I add.I have added system & system32 but still doesn't work. The code I have is below.what references to add & if/what to copy to output directory.I'm using VBExpress 2008
I have added:-
Public Const c_strKeyName As String = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TimWadSoftware\ServiceReport\"
Private Sub MainForm_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
My.Settings.Reload()
[code]....

I have a VS2010 solution (upgraded) that has two projects, an EXE and a DLL. In both the Target framework versions are 4.0. When one look at the references of the EXE project, one can see that the System.dll (and System.Core.dll and so for) references to the v4 version (the latest); however, in the DLL project the references points to the .Net Framework v2 version. Why is this happening? How can I make all my projects to point to the v4 libraries?

i have a problem where i've hard coded the file path of an access database i'm using with a VB.net program. this means that if i publish the program the database doesn't publish with it and i have to "ship" the program with the the database file separately and create another form so the user can say where the file is held. i don't want to do this.is there any way to get the access database file to publish with the program and then access that file path by code? for example the database file is held in the same folder as the installed program and then is accessed by code so there is no need to use a specific file path.

I would be grateful for information or a link to a clear explanation on issues relating to accessing the registry in a 64 bit system (I don't have access to a 64 bit machine so can't test). I have a VB.Net app' that needs to read the registry to find where Ghostscript is installed. This is: key = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\GPL Ghostscript")
If the VB.Net app (made on my 32 bit machine) is run on a 64 bit machine, will it still work (assuming the key for Ghostscript is the same on 64 bit)? Or do I need to manually access the 'Wow6432Node' registry or something? Plus, are there any security implications reading the registry or can I safely assume that an installed app' will always be able to read the registry?

My application needs to change the default signature of outlook and I need to change the value of a registry key for this. But I get a error that I probaly don't have enough permissions. Strange thing is, if I change it manually it doesn't complain.
Error:System.UnauthorizedAccessException : Cannot write to the registry key.
Happens at the 2nd line:
vb
Dim subkey = Microsoft.Win32.Registry.CurrentUser.OpenSubKey("SoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows Messaging SubsystemProfilesOutlook9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A66760000002") subkey.SetValue("New Signature", Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes("Eigen"), Microsoft.Win32.RegistryValueKind.Binary)

I need to read the value of one subkey located under a list of 17,000 keys in windows registry. I have no problem doing it locally but cannot get the system.management name space to do the same remotely. I know MSDN documents the system.management name space but much more knowledge is assumed than in other areas I have used. Assume no problems with connection and authentication.[code]....

Trying to read key "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsU pdateAU" value "AUOptions" and get the following : A first chance exception of type 'System.Security.SecurityException' occurred in mscorlib.dll Error occurs in ReadRegistry key SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate AU : Requested registry access is not allowed. This occurs in my vb.net application when application is run under an account called OPER in the USERS group. The application :
1/is on my PC's hard drive, its not a web app or on a network share
2/is launched via a desktop click
3/ has a manifest specifying executionlevel "AsInvoker"
It does not occur when the Application is run as an Administrator. It does not occur if I read the value with a non .NET program when logged in as OPER whch makes me think it is a .NET problem not a registry permissions problem. Examining "Effective Permissions" shows that my OPER login has query value permission.I need the application to be able to read the key like the non .NET application while running at USERS level.

Currently, I am try to get the email addresses that have been saved or stored by the user of the computer. This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.

I am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.
I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.
In this key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?
I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.

I am working on a VB Console Application that takes an Autocad drawing type DWG and converts it to a PDF using a shell command that calls a third party application. In this case, acmecadconverter.exe from www.dwgtool.com. Then the PDF that is created needs a unique watermark, so I call a second application for that called pdftk.exe from www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/.
Everything works as intended, except when I try file names that contain spaces. The file system object does not tolerate spaces in the drawing file name. For instance, the following command gives me a system.io.filenotfoundexception...
My.Computer.FileSystem.RenameFile("Test Flowchart1.dwg", "Test~Flowchart1.dwg")
It's the same problem for all of my File System commands. Either file not found or invalid arguments.
The complete script I'm using is here:
Code:
Sub Main()
Dim arrArgs() As String = Command.Split(","), _
i As Integer, folderPath As String, myPart As String, _

I just bet the answer to this question already exists, however I saw no search mechanism under the forum. Anyhow, I would like to change registry data, and this code is asking for an instance to the object.
Dim RegKey As RegistryKey = My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwa reAnyDWGSoftwareDWGtoPDFProSettings", True)
RegKey.SetValue("OutputPDFFileOpt", 1)
Finally, I want to apply this setting to the program on four different computers (local, and three others on the network).

I wrote an application to manage several installers and I wanted to throw in some registry settings as well. Unfortunately the following code is not writing to the registry, nor is it returning any exceptions.I'm running Visual Basic 2010 Express as administrator using Windows 7 64 bit, I can manually add the values, and I can add them from a .reg file manually but not even by calling the .reg file as a new process (it asks for permission, says it succeeded, but nothing changed).The key already exists, all I need to do is add two values.
My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("SOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMAINFeatureControlFEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION", True)
My.Computer.Registry.SetValue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMAINFeatureControlFEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION", "uwgm_client.exe", 32768, Microsoft.Win32.RegistryValueKind.DWord)[code].....

I have a line of VB code which looks like this : If GroupTagDropDownList.SelectedValue Is "1" Then The system doesn't throw up any errors for it but the statement doesn't appear to work.
I think that the problem must lie in how I've referenced the '1' value - I've tried putting single quotation marks around it but it appears to make no difference at all.
There is definitely a value in the drop down list of value '1' but it doesn't appear to be read at all.

I have been given a .dll file (implemented in C++) that I want to use in my VB.NET application.When I try to add a reference to this dll using Visual Studio I get the following error:A reference to 'path-to-dll' could not be added. Please make sure that the file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or COM component.
Based on this error I concluded that I need to register the dll. Since it has been implemented with unmanaged code I tried to use the regsvr32 tool to register it. But when I try to register the dll using this tool I get the following error:Name-Of-DLL was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered. how do I add a reference to this dll in my VB.NET application?If I have to register it, how?
