Better Performance With Multi Threading?

Feb 15, 2009

I'm creating a password hash recovery tool that uses brute force. I have the brute force algorithm run in a background worker. It all works, but some similar apps I tried out have performance ~100x bigger then my app. (mine does 50k keys/second, some others do 5m keys/second or more.)I realize this is partly caused by using a .Net language, but I suspect there are ways to significantly speed up the brute force. A lot of ppl say I should use multi threading, but how is this done in practice? Splitting up the passwords to check would slow down my app I think.

Threading - Form Doesn't Load Up

Feb 11, 2009

I want to build in the Mongoose web server into my application. My program consists of a form and a module. The module contains the Mongoose code copied from here: [URL] If I call the Main() function in the module from my form's Load event then the web server starts correctly and I can connect to it. However, that's as far as the applicaiton goes - my form doesn't load up. I guess this is because my application is only single threaded and the Mongoose code basically puts the thread into sleep mode waiting for a http request.

So, the question is how do I go about getting Mongoose into a separate thread that starts up when my application starts, but then allows my form to load and be operable?

How To Debug DataSet Performance?

Aug 9, 2011

I have a dataset in a Visual Studio 2010 Web App project which accesses the DB with a complex SQL statement. If I run the statement in SQL Management Studio directly, it loads in a less than a second. If however, I run it using the "Preview Data" button in the dataset designer, or I try to access it on a page (with a gridview for example), it takes over 40 seconds!

Performance Reading Text File?

Jun 14, 2012

i have this simple code from a vb.net project:

Using sr As New StreamReader(NewSwitch.ActFolder & NewSwitch.ActSShowName)
worker.ReportProgress(LoadSwitchProgressType.Normal, "Loading Active SupportShow, size " & NewSwitch.ActSShowSize & "...")
NewSwitch.ActSShowData = sr.ReadToEnd
End Using

Obviously it reads a file - a 20M text file to be exact. Now if this 20M file is on my PC, it reads in about a second. If i open this same file in a text editor, such as Conext, its about the same.However, if this 20m File is on a network location, the Context text editor loads the file in about 1 min 40 seconds. I would have expected similar times with my vb.net code, but it took 7 minutes 45 seconds.I have no idea what the text editor uses to read a file, but i figure i must be able to get similar time in vb.net somehow.

Improve Paged Gridview Performance : Huge Underlying Dataset?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm currently working with a gridview that has a huge underlying dataset.I'm almost certain that I saw something about a new facility in Visual Studio 2010/.NET 4, which would improve the performance (e.g. doesn't download all the data on databind, but rather only what data required for current page). My guess would be that it was using AJAX.I didn't need it at the time I saw it, and now I can't find it, even though I've been hunting online for a while.

An in-line table valued function in SSMS takes about 6 seconds to return 11088 records. Multi-threading Processing - Processing A Large List Of Records And Inserting Them Into SQL Database One By One

Mar 18, 2011

I just learned some basics of multi threading in VB.net recently as I came across processing a large List of records and inserting them into SQL database one by one.

I have code look like this:

Private Sub btnLoadNow_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnLoadNow.Click

Dim autoLoad1 As New Thread(AddressOf AutoLoad)
autoLoad1.Start()

[CODE]...

Itemlists is a global lists i retrieved from database, everything looks fine to me but when i run this program, I found that the threads are inserting one records 9 times into the database(I have 9 threads in total), which makes me think that maybe i need to specifically assign 1/9 of a list to each thread? Is there another way to do it which doesn't require the splitting of the list, if not , how do i split it then assign?

Will my application work on computers that have .net 3.0 or .net 3.5 framework installed, but not 2.0?In other words: Is the .net framwork always backward-compatible?

DataTableAdapter.Update Doesn't Insert New Records In The Linked Access Database

May 20, 2010

I am writing an application that does a number of different things with data downloaded from hardware which is monitoring the power used in my home and produced by my PV Solar array. I have run into a roadblock early on, because I cannot seem to get new data into an Access database that I have linked to my application by means of a DataSet. I have checked the DataAdapter's InsertCommand, DeleteCommand, and UpdateCommand definitions (created by the DataSet Wizard), and they seem to make sense, and nothing is throwing exceptions or otherwise making VB complain, but new rows added to the dataset are not being added to the database.

ListView To Display Records From DataSet

Feb 21, 2012

I am trying to use a ListView to display records from a dataset. In these records, I have 4 columns: EmployeeID, EmployeeName, CustomerID, and CustomerName. It is possible for both the Employee and Customer to be listed multiple times, but with different combinations.

For instance, if we have Employees 1, 2, 3 and Customers A, B, C we could have:
(1A)
(1B)
(1C)
(2A)
(2B)
etc.

What's going on with mine is I add say (1A) to the listView and then when it tries to add (1B) I get an error saying that it cannot add the same item.

Here is my code so far:
With list
.Clear()
.Columns.Add("Employee ID")
.Columns.Add("Employee Name")
.Columns.Add("Customer ID")
.Columns.Add("Customer Name")

VS 2010 2 Ways Of Reading All Records - Which One Is Best And Why

Oct 17, 2010

I have come up with this 2 methods of reading all records on a database table. Both work nice but I would like your expert opinion on which delivers best performance and why.We are reading table "DATA" and filling an array called lstData with the contents of the "Data" field.

1) Method one is using the bindingsourse to go through all the records.

[code]...

My guess is that the first method, while simpler to the eye could use more overhead. What I really would like to know is if the second method really delivers better performance and if it is worth doing all the manual SQL queries.
