Track Most Recently Accessed File?
Jul 21, 2011
I am developing an application in VB.NET. in which I need to open the most recently accessed file (i.e. last accessed file in the previous session) when the application starts. One approach is to save the location of the most recently accessed file in a text file and read it when the application runs the next time.

I am trying to create a log file which I am going to use to populate some controls (DataGridView or Treeview). I am trying to figure out if should use text files or XML files to do so. Effectively the log will highlight multiple phases in a client-side app. The log will be written to at various phases when the project is running. The user will always have the options move on to the next phase or save progress and exit the project. As such, I want the log file to highlight how far the user has progressed throught the various phases AND I want the log to highlight varous information from each phase. Whenever the user starts the project, they will be given the option to load existing log files. So the project will have to read these log files and append them where necessary as the user progresses.
I am not sure what the best way to do this is and below is a rudimentary approach using text files. As you can see, the top of the file would have a summary of all the phases and whether or not the user completed each phase. Next each phase would have a data section highlighting what data was stored along the way. I have used a ":" to denote each section. Then within each section I would obviously need to use a delimeter for all my data. So if Phase1 = True, then I would load all the pertinent data from "Phase1:" into the desired control. Can anyone provide an efficient way of doing this and provide some insight as to whether I should use XML instead. The phases my change during development and I am not sure yet which controls I will be using. Does XML provide more flexibility.
In summary I am looking to create, read/write and append log files and populate controls with the data in varous sections of the log file. Example:
Phase1 = True
Phase2 = True
Phase3 = False
Phase4 = False

I've been stuck on this for 3 days now.I have a TiffBitmapDecoder accessing a file and generating a BitmapSource from one of the frames in the file. If I try and modify the file after that e.g. insert new frame or even delete file, I'm informed that the file cannot be accessed as another process is accessing the file.How do I either a) Get the TiffBitmapDecoder to release the file or B) force all processes that have access to a file to release?Note: I'm using WPF and the TiffBitmapDecoder does not have standard fileStream methods like close, dispose or flush.

I am working on a file access monitor wrapped up in a VB .Net Class. The ileSystemWatcher is working and my log file shows files when they are accessed. However, I am having trouble returning who or what accessed the files. For example....system services and processes should return something like NT-ATHORITYSYSTEM while a network share being accessed by another computer should return DOMAINUSERNAME and finally a process running in the background via "Switch User" should be returned as DOMAINSOMEOTHERUSER ....anybody have any ideas? I have searched high and low and have found nothing but other people asking the same question and people saying how it is not possible. the Sysinternals Process Monitor is able to output the correct results and its documentation states it was created using NET API however I can not find any references to any such API calls or combination of such. Should I be using something else other than the FileSystemWatcher? My code is below

I am brand new to VB and been advised it might be the best thing to use for my problem, so here goes. I need to be able to scan a machine for all excel and access db files and list them by name and last accessed time. I would like to be able to do this in bulk so more than 1 machine at a time but thinking it my be best to do each machine seperately.
When I have the data I need it to be exported in a list to either excel or a text file or anything really. Als if possible how would I add the machine name to the list so I know which one i have scanned. I have been searching the forums and google but think I am getting more confussed as this is a whole new world for me.

I have been searching throughout the forums and have yet to find an answer that will work for resolving the above problem in my program The exception is occurring within the declaration of a new streamwriter and after the closing of a previously used streamreader that accessed the same file I'm trying to write to. I think that the file is completely closed at the end of the streamreader block, but I cannot tell for sure.
This bit of code is the block just before the streamwriter declaration and the declaration itself:
Dim fn As Integer = 1 'first number for searching for file
[Code]...
If you need more info or more code chunks to help solve the problem, feel free to ask

is it possible to hook a file (let's say a text file) and track what goes in (or possible out) of it so if a 3rd party program adds "a note" to a text file a vb string picks up "a note" from the hook on that text file and adds it to a string or something.

I have a DGV that is designer generated. I can create a row perfectly fine, and I can edit rows perfectly fine. However, if I try to edit a row that I have just added and saved, i get a concurrency error. As you can see in the code below, I perform some "injection" of information into the rows before they are pushed back to the database.
System.Data.DBConcurrencyException was unhandled
Message=Concurrency violation: the UpdateCommand affected 0 of the expected 1 records.
RowCount=1

We have an application that was written in VB6 which I am trying to convert to use the latest VB (Visual Studio 2008), mostly because it's not possible to buy a licenced version of VB6 anymore (personally I'd have been happy to just keep using VB6, but without having a proper licenced version of it, we basically had to chance).The VB6 version I could simply tell it to compile the application and it produced the .exe file which I could then copy onto the server where it was running and replace the old version and then run it.
It seems like such simple things are not possible in VB 2008.I have got the application converted, and if I run it through the debugger it is working correctly, but now I need to get a compiled application to run on the server and can't seem to do it.I have tried using the publish application thing, and nothing I try succeeds in getting a working application.

I am developing an ASP.Net VB Web Application
The application contains a GridView which displays the records of a user table from my created datable. The database is an Sql server database.
The code below inserts data into one table and through the built in function @@Identity to insert the most recently added record id (tt_id) from the trainingTbl table and inserting that record id into the userAssessmentTbl. Adding the identity to the second userAssessmentTbl table works fine.
[code...]
The issue I'm having seems to be centered on how I insert a uniqueidenifier from a GridView into a userAssessmentTbl database!
And how, I guess using a loop I can insert the UserId records from that Gridview (GridView1) into the userAssessmentTbl table along with the looped id from the @@Identity.
This part of the insert parameter seems to be incorrect:
[code...]
And the error I'm met with is: 'Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.'
I've also tried it like this:
[code...]
And im met with the error: 'Operand type clash: int is incompatible with uniqueidentifier'
The qusetion has slightly changed to how do I Insert a String into SQL DB Where DataType Is Uniqueidentifier?

I am using VB.NET in VS10. After I add items to a list box I'd like it to scroll down so that the most recent items are visible. I tried this with no luck:
StatusListBox.SelectedItem = StatusListBox.Items.Count - 1
How to make the box always display the most recently added items?

Below is some code that I'm using to create objects with Visual Basic:
For indexCounter As Integer = 1 To TotalParticipants Step 1
participantClock = New Label
participantClock.Size = New Size(100, 20)
participantClock.Name = "participantClock" & indexCounter
[code]....
I'm creating a label, a button, Timer, and Stopwatch. (Though I have sinking feeling I don't need BOTH a timer and stopwatch since I'm counting time.)What I would like to do, is create the label and set that label's text to be the value from the stopwatch. The button that will be created will stop THAT stopwatch.
The problem that I'm having is that I cannot call the stopwatch by name since it wasn't created yet and VB throws a hissy fit at me for it. (After all it wasn't really declared.)So the question becomes, how do you call the most recently dynamically created control and assign events using that control. If it's not possible to do, I do not mind dumping the form and starting over creating 30 stopwatches instead (but I'd like to avoid that, if possible).

We have lots of security policies in place and many people (or process) have the privilege to access anyone's computer. Is it possible to tell who access and when and what folder was accessed? I know eventlog has lots of entries you can check, but in terms of what folder was accessed, is it possible?

I have a treeview that I use regulary. During testing I usually got to one of three locations in the treeview. However I have to drill down quite far in the TreeView to get to these locatons. The Treeview Parent node is "C:"
I would like to build some funtionality in so that I can present the user with a list of commonly chosen paths and then have the treeview reload and generate the full path from the list. Maybe this would be generated off a right click menu. Not really sure exactly the best way to do this.

Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(Environment.GetFolderPath(ProgramFiles) to get the Program Files directory in my application. The problem is that when running on a 64 bit version of Windows 7, I am getting the Program Files (x86) directory, not the 64 bit directory. As far as I can tell, everything is compiled as 64 bit.This code is actually in a DLL that is accessed during the installation of the program.
Is there any way to get the 64 bit path?

I currently have an application that uses the FileSystemWatcher object and events to monitor activity in a selected folder. this works great for detecting files being copied to or created in the folder, moved or deleted and changed, however, I am trying to determine if a file is accessed (opened) regardless of if it is modified. One of the NotifyFiler options is LastAccess. It appears that this fires an event, however, it always seems to be the Modified event. I would like to be able to keep track of file access and modification separately. I currently store the activity in a listbox and also in a richtextbox where the text color illustrates the type of activity.Does anyone know how to accomplish determination of file Access versus file Modification?I have included some of my FilesystemWatcher code below.
Code:
Private Delegate Sub AddActivityTextDelegate(ByVal sActivityText As String, ByVal cColor As System.Drawing.Color)

Suppose I have an IEnumerable such as a List(TValue) and I want to keep track of whether this list is being accessed (to prevent issues with, say, adding to the list while it is being iterated over on a different thread); I can always write code such as the following:
Dim List1 As New List(Of Integer)
Dim IteratingList1 As Boolean = False
' ... some code ... '
[Code]....
(I realize this code is very arbitrary, but it illustrates what I'm talking about.)
My question is whether there's a better/cleaner way to perform this check than by manually updating and accessing a Boolean, as above. I feel like there must be, but, to my knowledge, there isn't any IEnumerable class with a built-in "I am being iterated over" method or property. And writing a new class that implements IEnumerable and contains such a property seems like overkill to me.
